13 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
A woman plots a takedown of the popular professor who wronged her sister in this provocative novel about the nature of obsession and the ways that love, desire, and anger reveal the best, and worst, of us It was her story first, before I made it mine From the moment she discovered her sisters secret relationship with charismatic professor Jay Crane, Jessie Mooney has been convinced that hes to blame for the events leading to her death. Haunted by their last email exchangeYou know what you didshe enrolls in graduate school and competes her way into Cranes famous Law and Literature class, setting into motion a plan to get close to him so she can expose who he really is. But when she finally earns his trust and the coveted position as one of his favorites, the truth becomes darkly twisted. Is it justice Jessie craves, or revenge? And what does she stand to lose if she gets her way?

I finally finished this one! I don‘t think the professor got anywhere near the punishment he deserved. This happens way too often and in most cases it‘s never even reported… very sad!

Starting this one today. I chose it randomly this morning before work. Really odd that it has similarities with “The Rachel Incident” that I just bailed on! We will see how this one goes! 🤞🤞

#wondrouswednesday @Eggs

1. My favorite authors are mostly dead or otherwise out of commission. I guess Ishiguro, and maybe Patrick DeWitt (although I still haven't read The Librarianist).
2. Slaughterhouse Five (Vonnegut)
3. Raymond Chandler for his Philip Marlowe books and Wodehouse for the Jeeves & Wooster books. And, as I was obsessed with Dune in high school, Frank Herbert.

Pickpick

“A riveting, surprising thriller that contains much more at its heart, The Favorites is a ferocious commentary on the nature of justice, and the gulf between what is right and what is legal. Gripping, emotional, and at times profound, I raced through this in an evening.”
– Kate Collins, author of A House for Good Children

Mehso-so

A few tweaks would‘ve changed this from okay to great. Jessie‘s sister had an affair with a professor when he is in Dublin for a semester. Shortly after, Audrey runs to Central America and dies. Jessie goes to his school in Philly to take him down. Major plot hole: how did the professor, in the age of smartphones, not know what his gf‘s sister looked like? The addition of some of Audrey‘s journal entries would‘ve helped me understand her better.

Megabooks Oh yes, and this was my #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks !! 👍🏻👍🏻 13mo

I wasn‘t super impressed with this month‘s #aardvark picks, but a slow month lets me pick up some backlist titles! I chose The Favorites because I love dark academia. I wanted their pretty edition of Rouge even though I‘ve already read it. Desert Creatures has been on my radar for months, so I pounced while it‘s still around. 🤩🤩
