Having read book 2 in this series, I decided I should read the first one! Although having pretty cover, being released in November and set in the week before Christmas 1952, this isn‘t a typical festive crime novel, but the narrator is amusing and tells a good tale, so I enjoyed it.
First in a festive crime series. I‘ve read the second but not yet read this one 🤦♀️

December this year is going to be about Christmas mysteries! I usually do this for the week before the holiday - but I‘m desperate for the holiday feeling to be longer this year!
Thought I was crossing a standalone off of my tbr, therefore making it one book shorter (I add the next in a series as I start the one I'm currently reading), but noooooo. Turns out this is going to be a series now so that's one more added.
Doesn't it stink when we have to leave our happy place and handle our grown-up responsibilities?
Looks like a festive mystery, right?
You'd be forgiven for thinking that, but this wasn't all that festive.
Still, Inspector Grasby is a funny narrator. His lively, amusing patter made this an enjoyable read from start to finish, which made up for the lacklustre mystery.
I hate it when Intelligence get mixed up in a murder mystery. Having finished, I still can't tell you whose side everyone was on, or even how many sides there were.

The prompts are so good! I want to do #cloakanddaggerchristmas @Ruthiella 💕 I always enjoy it...
The thing is, can I make it gel with my other December project... reading Christmas mysteries so I can make a review video 🤔
Loving all your suggestions, folks! You're making me feel so festive 🥳🔪🌰🎄🎁✨️🧣🔎📚🔨🩸🎅🏻
What a departure for this author from his series set in Kinloch. This was set a few years after the Second World War and involved a disgraced detective sent to solve a brawl in and murder in a remote village. This one took a while to get going, but soon had me fully hooked. An interesting ending to the book. I get the impression this could be the first in a new series and I really hope so.
A superbly written book.
