Jack Room 204Miss Stretchberry February 25 Today the fat black cat up in the tree by the bus stop dropped a nut on my head thunk and when I yelled at it that fat black cat said Murr-mee-urrr in a nasty spiteful way. I hate that cat. This is the story of Jack words sounds silence teacher and cat.

Okay, I LOVED this. The authentic feel of a child's voice navigating poetic structure vs a relative's idea of what poetry should be; the focus on onomatopoeia as a way to try to understand mother's experience of a world without sound. The warming to cats, healing from grief of lost dog. Beautiful progression. Will definitely be reading the companion book Love That Dog. 😍

My world is colliding! One poetry collection with the original poem. One book of poetry from a single author that references/critiques it. Fun times. ☺️

If I were to describe this book in eight words it would be... Jack and the black cat, from enemies to sorta friends?relationship.

Dana.o Also, I would rate the book a 6 out of ten not the worst but not the best either. 3y

#curiouscovers: pets #littenlisten

I only listened so far to Hate That Cat for my #audioathon. Maybe I‘ll have time to squeeze in Love That Dog tomorrow? I can‘t believe tomorrow is the last day of the month!

These are middle grade poetry.

rubyslippersreads My cats forbid me to read the tagged book. 😹 4y
Soubhiville @rubyslippersreads I know. I don‘t like the title, but he doesn‘t end up hating the cat. 4y
Daisey @rubyslippersreads @Soubhiville The dog book comes first chronologically and I think the titles make more sense once you read that one. Although, honestly I don‘t think I gave the cat title much thought before. (edited) 4y
Eggs I loved these 2 !! 👏🏻🐶🐱♥️ 4y
rubyslippersreads @Daisey @Soubhiville My cats are very sensitive. 😹 3y

Middle grade poetry book written as a series of homework assignments in a poetry class. My favorite parts were when the main character who is writing the poems used them to ask questions about the poetry they‘d read in class.

It‘s cute and short, probably good for kids who enjoy writing. (Spoiler alert: he doesn‘t end up hating cats.)

#littenlisten: hug your cat holiday.

So much to love here. Jack is a year older in this sequel to Love That Dog. His teacher moved up and is still sharing poetry.

I love the mention of literary devices
I love that mom is Deaf
I love the slow acceptance of the cat
I love the poems by Jack

Sorry I waited so long to read this.

5⭐️ My cat is not caring to take any pictures at the moment, so my slumbering dogs are the next best option, especially since Jack continued to describe is life with Sky his dog, as well as his kitten, Skitter. Again, read this book when you‘ve got 10 minutes to yourself- it‘s very beautiful in its simplicity and Jack‘s observations about the beauty in every day life is wonderful

What fun! It wasn't even my pick to bring along - my son opened it and tossed it aside when he saw they were poems. I opened it for a momentary distraction and happily devoured it. Will read more of Creech!

Sequel to Love That Dog.

Observant readers will be able to pick up clues of what happened in the first book, but most readers will prefer to experience the story in order.

Jack's voice comes through loud and clear in his poems and I love the way he he uses them to communicate sound to his deaf mother.

The poems Jack's class is studying are included at the end. Be prepared to flip back to them if you need a refresher!

Thrifty finds today! Two novels are set in the west, and I am a sucker for most anything western (if it's not cheesy). 😉

Tamra @ReadingEnvy didn't you discuss this on your podcast? If so, that is what put a bug in my ear about it. 8y
ReadingEnvy @Tamra possibly! In my head I read it prior to starting the podcast but they may have overlapped. 8y

Went to three bookstores today. Part my haul sat in the hot car too long and now the stickers won't come off. 😕 I'm hoping a spell on the fridge will help...? Any advice on how to get off pesky sales stickers?

SoniaC Oh no. I've never had that happen. Hope giving them a brief chill helps! 8y
Eyelit Nail polish remover has worked for me in the past. No residue left behind either. 8y
Traej73 Goo be gone or possibly rubbing alcohol. Not sure if it would leave a mark. 8y

kdwinchester @SoniaC Thanks! I got the stickers of a couple so far. @samwinchester90 opened the fridge and thought it was the weirdest thing ever. 😅 But hey, if it works, right? 8y
kdwinchester @Eyelit I def will try that! I have that in the house too. 👍🏽 8y
thebookmagpie Apparently a wee dab of lighter fluid works as well, if you happen to have any 👍 8y
samwinchester90 @thebookmagpie how does one figure that out? Like, how does that conversation start??lol! 8y
thebookmagpie @samwinchester90 I have no idea! I posted the same problem on Twitter a few months ago and that was the response I got but now that I think about it Indi wonder where those people got it from 😆 8y
thebookmagpie *I do wonder 8y
LilMamaMastro A little light alcohol rub, maybe? 8y
rachel_mbc We keep Goo Gone beat our wrapping station and it almost always works. Have to be careful not to use too much, though, or it can get greasy feeling. 8y
Christine I usually find that a little neutral cooking oil gets rid of the sticky residue (and doesn't leave a strong smell). 8y
kdwinchester Thanks, everyone, for all of your wonderful tips! We got all the stickers off with just some mild residue. Def going to try some of your suggestions to get rid of the last bit of stickiness. 👏🏽👌🏽😊 8y
kdwinchester Now I'll also never leave new books in the car in 90-something degree weather. 😅 8y
Tanner Goo Be Gone works for me too - just a little bit should get rid of that last remaining residue. 8y
Zelma Hand sanitizer also works. We had tons of it at the library and worked in a pinch. 8y
Sydsavvy Oh I'm all Google eyed over this one- 8y
kdwinchester @Sydsavvy it's possibly my favorite nonfiction book, so when I saw it in hardback, I had to buy it. My paperback is suffering from so much love. 😍 8y
Sydsavvy Have you listened to it on audio? Highly recommend! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 8y
kdwinchester @Sydsavvy surprisingly, no I haven't! I'll def have to check it out now though! 8y
Sydsavvy Yes! And I'm thinking its time for me to listen to it again. 💃🙂 8y
