The Corinthian | Georgette Heyer

"A writer of great wit and style...I've read her books to ragged shreds."-Kate Fenton, Daily Telegraph A daring escape Penelope Creed will do anything to avoid marrying her repulsive cousin. Dressed in boy's clothing, she's fleeing from London when she's discovered by Sir Richard Wyndham, himself on the verge of the most momentous decision of his life. And a heroic rescue When Sir Richard encounters the lovely young fugitive, he knows he can't allow her to travel to the countryside all alone, so he offers himself as her protector. As it happens, at that very moment Sir Richard could use an escape of his own... What Readers Say: "Marvelous screwball comedy and great romance!" "Light hearted and fun, full of adventure and misadventure. But it is Heyer's style, much reminiscent of Jane Austen's, yet more colorful and engaging, that makes this book truly delightful." "A sprightly handful of a heroine, an amused grey eyed hero, and a colorful and diverse group of supporting characters...throw in a road trip, a murder over stolen jewels, and a mystery, and there's a little something for everyone." "Triumphantly good...Georgette Heyer is unbeatable."-India Knight, Sunday Telegraph "Her books sparkle with wit and style."-Publishers Weekly

The age difference between the protagonists is disturbing by today's standards but otherwise, this novel is a fun romantic adventure with several intertwined subplots.

The cover is perplexing to me, as the heroine spends almost the entire novel in boys' clothing. 😅

First book finished for the #FabulousFebruary readathon! @Andrew65
This was also my #DoubleSpin choice for the month. #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks These particular Heyer editions they just seem to slap some random artwork on them with absolutely zero connection to the actual story 😂 3y
Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 I love Georgette Heyer 3y
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks Yes, it does seem as if that's what the publishers are doing!

@Andrew65 I love Heyer too, the mysteries as well as the romance novels.

I didn't love this one as much as The Grand Sophy, but it‘s still good. Richard's family has decided it's time for him to get married. They've chosen a logical, but cold woman, but before the marriage can happen he escapes to the country. A young woman, Pen, escapes through her window to avoid her own arranged marriage. She pretends to be Richard‘s nephew, which is very Twelfth Night. The romance isn't very believable, but the plot is fun.

This audiobook was a guilty pleasure. There‘s a lot wrong with the romance: age difference he‘s 29 she‘s 17 , he‘s the boss , instant romance etc... but I loved it anyway ❤️#romantsy

Another Hoopla audiobook- another historical #romantsy. Funny, cute and so lovely. Richard is so well dressed, so rich , so dreamy. Lucky Penelope!

I‘ve already read 3 books this week! I hadn‘t read this one in 8-9 years, and it was even funnier than I remembered! I really enjoyed the audio production except for the narrator‘s voice for the Honourable Cedric Brandon. Luckily he‘s just a hilarious minor character - so he didn‘t crop up too much. #jesshowreads2018

LeahBergen I definitely need to read another Heyer soon. ❤️ 6y

1. I don't really believe in guilty pleasures, at least not with books, but I've often seen Georgette Heyer referred to like this. I love her fun stories!
2. Serendipity, Ramen Girl, The Scarlet Pimpernel ??
3. I'm a terrible snacker so basically everything bad that I can't resist between meals ??
#tuesdaytidbit
@JenlovesJT47 did you know its titbit in the UK? I wonder if pronunciation changed it or the "rudeness" of the original ?

JenlovesJT47 Oh really? That‘s so funny! 6y
saresmoore I just read “tit bit” in a book and it made me giggle! My rather crass grandfather always used to say it was “a tit bit nipply” out when the weather turned cold. 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore ?? it looks like tit/tid comes from a dialect word "tid" meaning meaning tender but the titbit spelling is older. Weird ? 6y
saresmoore That is weird! Etymology is an unreliable, human-confused science. Makes me think of chicken tenders, though! 🙃 6y

Intrigues! Romance! Escapes! Disguises! Cross-dressing! Jewel-theft! Murder! Chases! Elopements! Mistaken identity! Cravats and quizzing glasses! As light and fluffy and insubstantial as a dandelion clock and utterly ridiculous. But much, much fun.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled With that kind of review, I‘m in! 😂👍 7y
Moray_Reads @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled if it's Regency fluff you're after this is the book for you! I'm seriously in debt to @LeahBergen for persuading me to put aside my lamentable prejudices and give Heyer a go. Pure fun and frolics 7y

Louise At first, I thought you must be reviewing one of Shakespeare's comedies! Exit pursued by a bear! 😂 7y
batsy @Louise 😂 It does sound like a very Shakespearean list of adventures! 7y
lucylovestoread Such a great review. I thought "I want to read that" even before I saw it was the wonderful Georgette Heyer 7y
Moray_Reads @lucyinedinburgh if these things strike your fancy I don't think there's anything but to like here, marvellous escapism. And hello, fellow Edinburgh-er! 👋👋 7y
lucylovestoread @Moray_Reads Ah! So lovely to meet someone else local! Technically I'm in East Lothian now but I chose this handle online many years ago 😀 7y

This was not the strongest Heyer I've ever read, but it did make me smile. The heroine is an independent scamp looking for an adventure to save her from her family's marriage plans. She charms even the most hardened of bachelors, the hero, into falling in love while chasing a jewel thief and restoring the honor of a well-to-do family. Romantic misunderstandings ensue!

PenguinInFlight Very pretty cover! 💖 8y

EloisaJames It's not my favorite either (The Grand Sophy!), but lots of fun all the same. 8y
thec0zy @EloisaJames I don't think I've read that one! I'll have to check it out. My favorite was Arabella, but I read it in early high school, so I'd have to reread it to make sure it holds up. 8y
EloisaJames @thec0zy Arabella was my fav in high school too! 8y

Took a break from coding homework to read the most Georgette Heyer of Georgette Heyer books. This Regency comedy-of-manners has everything you could possibly want from a study break-- runaway heroines, murder, romance, dandies, thieves, and the most 1970s cover of them all. Hope you're all having fun with the #readathon!

Zelma That looks like a lot of fun. I can't believe I still haven't read a Georgette Heyer. 😳 8y
