We Could Be Rats
We Could Be Rats: A Novel | Emily Austin
2 posts | 1 read
A moving story about two very different sisters, and a love letter to childhood, growing up, and the power of imaginationfrom the bestselling author of Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead and Interesting Facts About Space. Sigrid hates working at the Dollar Pal but having always resisted the idea of growing up into the trappings of adulthood, she did not graduate high school, preferring to roam the streets of her small town with her best friend Greta, the only person in the world who ever understood her. Her older sister Margit is baffled and frustrated by Sigrids inability to conform to the expectations of polite society. But Sigrids detachment veils a deeper turmoil and sensitivity. Shes haunted by the pains of her pastfrom pretending her parents were swamp monsters when they shook the floorboards with their violent arguments to grappling with losing Gretas friendship to the opioid epidemic ravaging their town. As Margit sets out to understand Sigrid and the secrets she has hidden, both sisters, in their own time and way, discover that reigniting their shared childhood imagination is the only way forward. What unfolds is an unforgettable story of two sisters finding their way back to each other, and a celebration of that transcendent, unshakable bond.

I just wrote to @Hooked_on_books that #botm is that good-kisser ex I keep slithering back to and always feel a bit ick about. My main issue with them is the whole main pick versus add-on thing. I thought Rats or Maddy would be a main pick, but I had to rejoin to find out they weren‘t. 😡🙄 But I loved Daniel Black‘s last book, so I rolled with this box. Plus I hate that you have to be a “friend” to get a decent add-on price. Sigh. #botm

Kitta I went for Isaac‘s song too because I loved his last one! (edited) 3d
Sace I remember when add-on price was $9.99 😢 3d
Amiable Ooh, I love Lisa Genova! What is this one about? 3d

Megabooks @Amiable college student with bipolar disorder. I really love her books! 3d
Amiable @Megabooks Me too! This one was my favorite so far: 3d
LeafingThroughLife I‘m with you on the main pick vs add on thing. I almost always find an add on I want but only like the main picks about a third of time so it‘s always a battle deciding whether I want to take a chance on a main pick that doesn‘t excite to be able to get an add on or not. Happily, The Favorites piqued my interest this time, so I‘m happy with my whole box and not just feeling held hostage by suboptimal main picks. 🙃 3d
Hooked_on_books I hate the add-on pricing structure, too. It‘s crap. 3d
BarbaraBB I see your ex is back 😀😉 2d
MaleficentBookDragon @LeafingThroughLife I‘m with both of you. I have a long #tbr on the #botm app but they are all “add-ons”. It‘s frustrating when I would buy 5 books but I can‘t because I‘m not interested in the main picks. I wanted to skip January but I choose A Killing Cold because it‘s my birthday month and they won‘t let you carry over your free book to next month. 😣 Though it does look like a fun winter thriller that‘s right up my alley. 😊 1d

I really wanted to love this. I read Interesting Facts About Space earlier this year and thought it was creative and fun while keeping respectful of mental health. This keeps the respectfulness but I felt it missed the mark for me. It is fairly repetitive which got old really fast. The first part is multiple attempts at a suicide note and it could have been half the length. I think there are interesting ideas but I lost steam.
