The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy
The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy | Brigitte Knightley
14 posts | 13 read | 7 to read
'Utterly unique, hilarious, swoony beyond my wildest dreams! This book is an instant classic and a true masterpiece, it took my breath away and made my heart explode' Ali Hazelwood A slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romantasy featuring a scholarly healer and a gentleman assassin, set in an exquisite fantasy world, perfect for fans of The Love Hypothesis and Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries. Osric Mordaunt, member of the Fyren Order of assassins, is in dire need of healing. Naturally - such is the grim comedy of fate - the only healer who can help is Aurienne Fairhrim, preeminent scientist, bastion of moral good, and member of an enemy Order. Aurienne is desperate for funding to heal the sick - so desperate that, when Osric bribes her to help him, she accepts, even if she detests him and everything he stands for. A forced collaboration ensues: the brilliant Woman in STEM is coerced into working with the PhD in Murders, much to Aurienne's disgust. As Osric and Aurienne work together to heal his illness and investigate the mysterious reoccurrence of a deadly pox, they find themselves ardently denying their attraction, which only fuels the heat between them. Tropes include: Enemies-to-lovers High interaction slow burn Hypercompetent idiots He falls first and harder Slaughter as a love language Praise for The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy: 'Brilliant and wildly imaginative, with a delicious forbidden romance set in a fascinating fantasy world. Knightley is a remarkable talent, weaving together witty comedy, slow-burn longing, and heart-wrenchingly poetic imagery' Sarah Hawley, author of A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon 'With the most wickedly delicious banter, Brigitte Knightley is sure to become your next favourite author. This had all the things I love most: a slow-burn romance that hurts so good, truly agonizing enemies-to-lovers, with a twisty mystery at its core' Julie Soto, author of Forget Me Not 'Brigitte Knightley is such a wonderfully talented writer with a unique voice and a real genius for banter. Anyone who loves enemies-to-lovers romantasy, will surely adore The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy!' India Holton author of The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love 'The slow burn romance of my dreams. Whip smart, creative, and brimming with banter and wit . . . both the hero and heroine had me laughing and shouting to just kiss already. This one is a rare delight' Isabel Ibaez, author of What the River Knows 'Utterly unique and delightful, this is the perfect romantasy for those who like their villains (and heroes) with a touch of murder, thievery, and questionable morals. Sexy and hilarious with dry-as-bone humour, Knightley's writing is not to be missed' Elissa Sussman, author of Funny You Should Ask 'This debut boasts gorgeously-written, vivid settings, a unique magic system and fresh fantasy world, razor-sharp wit, and graceful characterization. In short, Knightley's debut is nothing short of irresistible itself' Isabel Caas, author of The Hacienda

Fantastic banter all around. A slow burn enemies-to-lovers romance in a magical world. Did I mention the banter? The insults were on point and constant. It took a minute to understand the magical system, but once it clicked, the nuances were easy to follow.

This feels like reading fanfic, for the very good reason that it was. The serial numbers have been filed off, but the overall feel is very much still there. That's not a criticism per se, just a fact.

There is some fun dialogue, some fun scenes, but oh my goodness they're both unbearable and the romantic scenes are pure (and awful) purple prose. I enjoyed myself but also had SO many objections.

But hey, this was my #BookSpin.

shanaqui I've also made an excellent start on #BookSpinBingo, as you can see.

Anyway, I need to cogitate on what rating I want to give this. I sometimes struggle with balancing “did I have fun“ vs “did I think it was good quality?“.

I do wish people would stop assuming that everyone can identify Harry Potter fanfic at a hundred paces, though. I read the first couple of books, saw the first... three movies, maybe, and never read HP fanfic.

shanaqui Oh, hey, this was also on my #10BeforeTheEnd list! 2mo
Faranae Oh is THAT what it is fanfic of? I already dislike being “tricked“ into reading fanfic as it is (I don't care if other people enjoy fanfic, I simply don't myself!), but being tricked into HP fanfic feels... violating. There's a phrase for this, when you are tricked or coerced into violating your moral principles. 2mo
PuddleJumper It's weird how some advertise that it's fanfic and others don't. A lot of the recent Dramoine ones have been pushing that hard. I didn't even know that was a popular ship! Love your set up, so pretty 2mo
shanaqui @Faranae Yeah, I don't entirely know how I feel about published-fanfic in general, but this one... I could see the fingerprints (both of HP and of fanfic in general).

@Puddlejumper I knew Dramione was a thing, but you'd have to work hard to get me to see it, y'know? Which might be part of why this didn't work for me.

Oh, well, both of these people are fucking unbearable, aren't they? Sheesh.

“It was hard, being perfect in an imperfect world, but Aurienne managed. If she had a flaw, it was that she was the Best, and she knew she was the Best. Some called it arrogance. She called it competence untainted by performative humility. But if she was the Best - as brilliant as she was beautiful, a researcher unparalleled...“

It goes on. What in the everloving hell.

Faranae I take it she does not then get her deserved comeuppance? 2mo
shanaqui @Faranae Probably not. She's one of the romantic leads. 2mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was aggressively hilarious and perhaps the best example of dry, rude British humor I‘ve ever read.
Knightley had me looking up vocab words, laughing often, and slowly falling in love with these characters.
For something that started as Hermione/Draco fanfic, this still felt like a realized world, unique magic system, and fully new characters.
I cannot wait for book 2 😍

What do you MEAN I have to wait a full year for the next book?? This book reminded me of “The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy” (another of my favorites) and between that, the fantastic world-building, the humor/wit, and the superb slow-burn enemies to lovers romance, I absolutely LOVED this book and am anxiously awaiting the conclusion to this duology. Give it all the stars ⭐️

This was a low pick for me. I didn‘t realize it was a series! It didn‘t end and now I have to read the next book for hopefully a resolution to the story. This is a real SLOW burn. So slow, they kissed once at the end of the book but still “hate” each other.

I‘m not the biggest fan of #romantasy, as much seems to fall in line with a pretty standard formula with a ton of plot holes. But this one I found to be charming and beautifully written. Knightley sets up a magic system with limits, and the value systems that come with each character‘s particular caste of magic within the world are the real cause of their early enmity, rather than the pervasive “you or your family done me wrong” trope.

This was quite fun, and thankfully does not read in a way that forces you to actively consider the inspiration. I especially enjoyed the sassy deofols, and the dark humor throughout.

Too slow of a burn for me, but the writing is clever and the banter is funny!
