The Book of the British Library
The Book of the British Library | Michael Leapman
9 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
"As well as holding many of the world's most prized cultural treasures, the British Library is the repository of the nation's collective memory. Owing its origin to the generosity and far-sightedness of a handful of eighteenth-century scholars and book lovers, the Library's extensive collections now incorporate not only books and manuscripts but paintings, photographs, maps, sound recordings, newspapers, stamps, historic documents and more. Its holdings stand at 150 million items, increasing year by year. They constitute an unparalleled record of human achievement throughout history. In words and stunning images, this book tells the story of the Library's creation and development and explores the most significant items in its care. These include Magna Carta, Shakespeare's first Folio, Gutenberg's Bible, manuscripts of masterpieces such as Beowulf and Jane Eyre and of fine music, notably Handel's Messiah. Among its treasures are the earliest world maps and works inspired by all the great religions, many of them sumptuously illustrated. And in recent years the Library has made a point of acquiring the professional and personal archives of contemporary writers, actors and photographers. Revealed here, too, are some of its less expected artifacts, including Beethoven's tuning fork, celestial and terrestrial globes and quirky nineteenth-century advertisements for freak shows and patent medicines. The result is a book that will enlighten, delight and surprise its readers, reflecting the qualities of the institution it celebrates."--P. [2] of cover.

Reading this today - feel like I should use my BL Readers card as a book Mark. But that seems even more sad 😞. Miss those reading rooms can‘t wait to one day be back.

LeahBergen This book looks amazing! 😮 3y
Mitch @LeahBergen it‘s comforting when I can‘t go to the library in person. There are some chapters on the actual building and history of the collections and that is interspersed with deep dives into individual objects from the collection. 👍🏼 3y

Having a slow start - quick chapter, pastry & gaze at the amazing wallpaper in the Members Room before I admit to myself that the day has to start! #itsthesmallthings

OMG, @TrishB . Look what arrived today! I‘m crazy about these British Library bookmarks (and had to look up what a “Dawlish Warren” was 😂). This edition of P&P is gorgeous (I have a Thomas Hardy from this series) and I love the little British Library mints, the “Well Read” pin and the pretty card. Thank you, my friend! 😘😘😘

Kalalalatja Such a nice and thoughtful gift! 6y
LeahBergen @RachelO You‘re laughing at my “what‘s a Dawlish Warren”, aren‘t you? 😉 6y
LeahBergen @rustoryhuf They‘re the best, aren‘t they? ❤️ 6y
LeahBergen @Lizpixie Aren‘t they gorgeous? They will look lovely in the books I won from your generous giveaway. 😘😘 I have a small thing to send off to you tomorrow (just to say “thanks”). Who knows how long it will take to get there? 😆 6y
rockpools @LeahBergen😘😘😘 Next time I see one, I'll send you a photo! (But yes, it made me smile!) 6y
LeahBergen @RachelO This resort area is very close to where you live, Isn‘t it? Or in your area? 6y
rockpools @LeahBergen Yes, it's just down the river from here. The Warren's a big nature reserve and the town itself is known for its black swans. Plus lots of penny arcades and kids' rides. It's fun! 6y
TrishB Oh yay 🎉🎉 🎉 so happy they arrived! Had the parcel down as lost. We go to Dawlish Warren for holidays most years it's a lovely place. @Lizpixie you're on my list for my next visit to the British Library 😀 6y
Lizpixie @LeahBergen thank you sweetie, you didn‘t have to do that😘 @TrishB that would be awesome lovely! I‘ll have to think on something very Aussie for you in return. Have you ever tried vegemite before?☺️🇦🇺 6y
TrishB @Lizpixie no I haven't 😀 I'm assuming it's vegetarian!? Lol. 6y
LeahBergen @RachelO It sounds wonderful! 6y
LeahBergen @TrishB I wonder where it was hiding?? Probably in the same place that a few of my Book Depository orders have hidden before they show up two months later. It‘s bizarre. Thanks again - I‘m just so tickled with everything (I‘m letting it all sit on my library desk for a while so I can gaze at it lovingly 😆). 6y
LeahBergen @Lizpixie 😘😘 6y
TrishB There is obviously a holding place for your parcels somewhere to up the anticipation! 6y
Reviewsbylola Those look like nice bookmarks! 6y

If I ever run away from home, this may be where you find me. It's magnificent. So relaxed, so cultured & light filled. I had to put my husband on the train to go back to the States since he isn't coming to Oxford with me. To ease my heart I did what any good reader would do- I came to the library. Immediately I feel better and less traumatized by seeing him walk down to the underground station. Chin up, as they say. Now back to my books.

My fourth time in London and I FINALLY made it to the British Library! If you ever find yourself in this literary city, don't skip this. I was in awe as I glanced at Austen's handwritten diaries and letters and the manuscript of Eliot's Mill on the Floss. And these were just one of MANY! There is something so intimate about glancing directly at the pages that marked the initial inspiration behind a literary masterpiece. ♡ #booksaroundtheworld

Dragon Wow. I'm tearing up thinking about seeing those pages. Have fun 🐉 7y
