Jaimelire I think processed is ok - in moderation. It should be a treat once in a while, not your main source of nutrition. I should read this book! 😀 8y
thereadingowlvina @Jaimelire Yes, I agree! Everything in moderation 😊 8y

On a partially-related note, THANK U LITSY FOR GETTING ME INTO NONFICTION BOOKS. Thank you sooooo much. I couldn't stand nonfiction until this week. But I found one that sounded interesting on here, and I found a bunch more related to that, and now I've got a huge list of nonfic titles I want to read. So thank you beautiful Littens for existing and broadening my reading horizons, and all that. I am forever indebted. 💜💜💜💜💜💜

Pickpick

I thought this was a marvelous book. It covers subjects from American cheese to cereals, food science to added vitamins, & soybean oils/proteins to what's really in your meat products. It goes deep enough in explanations while not being too confusing or wordy for you non-chemists out there. If you're interested in learning a little bit about how super processed foods are made, I recommend this book ✨

queerbookreader @ReadingEnvy I have that sitting in my pile of library books right now!! I want to hit that up after I finish Real Food/Fake Food and White Bread 8y
ReadingEnvy @lemonlime799 I have never seen frappuccinos the same. 8y

Crying bcz I desperately want to finish this book but it feels like someone is pounding 40 nails into my skull and it hurts too much to read 😩

Alisnazzy Ugh I hate that! Feel better soon. Don't push yourself to the point where you're in serious trouble. Your book will be there waiting for you. 💖 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Pandora was always allegedly letting out some nasty nuisance...seriously though, take it easy and relax and feel better soon. 8y

Did you know that the creator of Kellogg's corn flakes, John Harvey Kellogg, was a vegetarian? 🤓🌱 #themoreyouknow

LauraBeth Did you ever see that movie The Road To Wellville? 8y
SharonGoforth @LauraBeth I've only seen parts of the movie, but the book by TC Boyle is great! 8y

LauraBeth Read the book first (by TC Boyle)! It has a fictional account of Kellogg and his wellness fascination 8y
LauraBeth @SharonGoforth you're correct - the book is better! 8y
PurpleyPumpkin I did not know that! Very interesting. 8y

One chapter in and I'm ready to barf. Be warned when you read these sort of industry-exposés, because they will make you squeamish. I should read The Jungle soon. Also, this book smelled so I sprayed it with perfume and now it smells like coconut ?

LeahBergen You're kinda making me sick. 😂 8y
queerbookreader @LeahBergen I'm super into food & nutrition and activism surrounding big food industries so I find this stuff interesting 🙈 8y
LeahBergen Oh, it IS interesting! It was just that final squirt of coconut... 😂 8y

LauraBeth @lemonlime799 what's your favorite book on food and nutrition? 8y
queerbookreader @LauraBeth Great question that I would love to answer after I've read some 😅 until now I've mainly just watched documentaries, but I know a lot of information about food and nutrition from the publication Nutrition Action, a monthly newsletter published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. I've read Nutrition Action for years and know a lot more than the average person, so I recommend checking that out 8y
LauraBeth @lemonlime799 well then you have to share what your favorite documentary is 😀 8y
queerbookreader @LauraBeth I only just decided to dip my toe into books on the subject. Not a big nonfiction reader 8y
queerbookreader @LauraBeth Oooooooo okay well I'm vegetarian, used to be vegan, and it might not be your cup of tea in which case that's totally cool, but my favorite is Forks Over Knives. It's a really good argument for plant-based diets. Food Chains is also SO GOOD please watch it, all about migrant worker exploitation. Cowspiracy gets into environmental problems with animal agriculture/some animal rights, if you're interested too 8y
queerbookreader @LauraBeth All of those can be found on Netflix! 8y
LauraBeth Thanks @lemonlime799 I'll check those out on Netflix. I was a vegetarian for a couple of years and want to go back to it because I felt so much healthier and better. I like reading about how our food is marketed, lobbied, politicized, etc 8y
queerbookreader @LauraBeth Definitely check out CSPI's website because they are all about that. I've got a book on the soda industry on my TBR, and a few books I've got now are about super processed foods so I'll let you know how much they hit on lobbying and politics 8y
queerbookreader @LauraBeth I think we're friends on goodreads, if you're interested go check out my TBR list under "most recently added", I literally added like 60 books about food/the industry last night so there might be something there you'll be interested in reading too! 8y
LauraBeth Great @lemonlime799 - thanks - I'll go look at your TBR on Goodreads 8y
IndyHannaJones Is it supposed to smell? 8y
queerbookreader @Hyaeger No it smelled weird and musty and funky 💩 8y
Hugoreads I read The Jungle waaay back when I was in 4th grade...1964! I never forgot it. Now I'm a vegan. I think I will read it again! 8y
