I only finished this because of an upcoming book discussion…

For a long lasting series, this just wasn‘t for me. The female MC is made to feel stupid - she sometimes says the wrong words - but then at times plays up on this “stupidity.” While cozies are not usually the best written nor have the most original plot lines, this one just seemed way too scattered and chaotic and almost folksy. This has been on my tbr forever - Alice Oswald‘s poem of Devon‘s River Dart from source to sea, told through the eyes of those who live, work and enjoy the river. It‘s refreshingly non-flowery/romantic - we hear the voices of poachers & sewage workers alongside chambermaids, wild swimmers & mythical characters. Audio, read by the author, was great.

I seem to be loving books that are super-local-to-me at the mo.

I loved Lawson‘s A Town Called Solace and have wanted to read more. This turned out to be her debut.

Kate gets invited to her nephew‘s 18th birthday party and this has her remember a particular yr in her past. The yr her parents died in a car crash when she was 7, her older brothers, Luke and Matt, were in their late teens and her younger sister was 1 yr. This yr would change them forever. No surprise, towards the end this book had me crying.

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around this one. The story itself was very interesting and inventive, and it kept my interest, but at the same time, I didn't love it and parts of it felt like the story was droning on and didn't need to be included. But, I'm glad I read it, as it's listed on the #apliterature book list, and I've heard a lot of people talking about it.

I FINALLY FINISHED! Phew. This short (224 pages of text) history of food is such a slow read. Very generalized (obviously) the style is still very academic. And it does not flow well at all. Interesting, but exhausting. #nonfiction #192019 #2002
