This is a story of August, a kid with facial difference & his struggle to fit in a normal school. It has both downpour & rainbows! It shows how a single act of kindness makes lot of difference in life. This book should be read by both kids & parents. Interesting thing is, a single story narrated in the perceptive of different people, while each one of them is correct in their own way. A heartwarming read 4.5🌟

This was a very realistic portrait of two families each dealing with their own and their shared past. It was also a story of a great love and mental illness. These two subjects lingered througout each storyline, and was worked out very well. I was happy with the way it ended but don‘t think it‘ll stay with me for long.

Thanks for this recommendation @RachelO - a really interesting perspective on the refugee experience for #refugeeweek.

I agree with you though, Nujeen did come across very immature for her age and, dare I say it, a little self-absorbed. However, I guess that‘s a product of her upbringing and the way she was treated by her family and society. It was still an amazing journey that they undertook.⬇️

squirrelbrain I‘m also going to be a little bit naughty and use this for #northmacedonia for #readingeurope2020. They did cross the country but, as Nasreen herself said, it only took them 2 hours in real life so it‘s only a tiny part of the book but they still went! My only other option for this country is a huuuge intense chunkster so.... 😁 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle 5y

rockpools That was quick! And yay for crossing off North Macedonia. What‘s the chunkster, so I can stack it 😉? And yes, she‘d definitely grown up very protected - I felt quite stressed for her sister at times. 5y

squirrelbrain Ha! You‘d love the chunkster - it‘s got very small writing too! I‘d have been interested to see a bit more of her sisters POV actually. And yes, it was a bit quick. I‘m getting a bit ‘skimmy‘ at the moment - it happens sometimes, particularly with NF and I‘ve read a lot of that recently.... need to calm down and enjoy! 5y

rockpools And have you read this? Fiction this time - a newly-retired German academic in need of a project ‘discovers‘ the refugee situation in his home town. More the POV of host communities than the refugees themselves, but a really thoughtful read.

rockpools @squirrelbrain Ha! Yes, UK Libby can be quite a challenge on that front. I hope you like this one - she comes across as very young in outlook, but I think that makes you appreciate even more what her and her family had to go through. 5y

charl08 @RachelO I think I heard about this one, but haven't picked it up. Amazing what some have survived. Friends showed me a photo of them sleeping in sleeping bags with their kids in the jungle in Calais and I almost didn't believe what I was seeing. How they kept their kids safe.🤯 5y

charl08 @RachelO I have, and thought it was very well done. However, a friend read it and was unimpressed by the use of Arabic- said there were some basic mistakes, which was disappointing to hear. 5y
