I enjoyed this story of a Anna Essinger and the effort she put into protecting and educating her students. Early on she realized Hitler‘s rise to power would be a danger to her school, so she found a way to move it to England in 1933. Then she worked tirelessly to provide for students already in her care and to accept more as the war went on. Although not like we would today, she also supported the mental health needs of her students. ⬇️

Daisey The book also follows the stories of children that were in hiding or in concentration camps until coming to the school after liberation. I appreciated these parallel stories, but it did take a long time to see how they connected to the school.

I was happy to see this as a free download through the #AudiobookSync program a few weeks ago as I wasn‘t really sure where I would find this Chinese classic. It was interesting to listen to, and I enjoyed the narration. However, after a while it got a bit repetitive and predictable, and I don‘t think that the stories will stick with me.

This was an great book. Through time travel it describes and explores aspects of slavery that I‘ve read about in history books from a much more personal perspective. I appreciated the focus on the women‘s stories and complexity of the characters.

NikkiM5 I‘ve been dying for a movie or miniseries of this book, but I am worried it will not do it justice. This book is so amazing. 4y
Kenyazero I just borrowed this audiobook from Overdrive without even reading the description. Now I'm really looking forward to reading it! 4y
Daisey @NikkiM5 It was so good! However, I can‘t imagine a movie or miniseries capturing it well. 4y

Daisey @Kenyazero I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. It‘s the first by Octavia Butler I‘ve had the chance to read. 4y
Kenyazero @Daisey I've only read 4 of her other works, but one of them (the first I read by her) quickly became a favorite of mine. I look forward to reading. 4y
Daisey @Kenyazero Which is your favorite? I‘ve heard many good things about many of her books, but this was the one I was most interested in reading. 4y
Kenyazero @Daisey Imago. It's the first of her books I read. It's actually 3rd in a series, but I didn't know that until after I read it. 4y

I‘ve been listening to this off and on today while working around the house. I‘ve heard so many great reviews of this book and so far it‘s living up to all of them.

This nonfiction YA does a great job of telling all sides of an event involving one teenager lighting the clothes of another teenager on fire while on a bus in 2013. I didn‘t know the details of the event before starting the book, so it packed quite a punch. It details a crime, but the more important message is about developing understanding and accepting others different from yourself.

2 free audiobooks weekly starting April 30—I‘ve been getting these for a few summers now, and they always have many great picks. Edit: they now use the Sora app for the downloads. #audiobooksync

JoScho I love this program. 4y
LibrarianRyan Love this program. Don‘t love the new app 4y
tjwill @LibrarianRyan I didn‘t even see before how they said they are using a new app for it. Thanks for mentioning it. I‘ve never used Sora before. 4y
LibrarianRyan @tjwill earlier it wouldn‘t let me in and if you read the app ratings that is apparently a common thing. 4y

After finishing All the Pretty Horses, I just couldn‘t jump back into my current audio so I went looking for something else in my available listens. This story of a group of men who attempted to walk across the border from Mexico to the U.S. in 2001 seemed a perfect complement to the story I had just finished. It is a harrowing story of persistence, death, and the situation at the border in the early 2000s.
