Started this book yesterday. A European wide blackout caused by black hat hackers.
The whole scenario sounds familiar with last winters warnings about blackouts due to gas shortages. And also the ransomware catastrophe in a German town administration in 2021.
I hope I can still sleep tonight! 😅
Wonderful! Another evocative, emotional, and moving novel from Hannah. She does such an amazing job of dropping you down in the middle of a time and a story and making you feel apart of the narrative. Her descriptions of the dirty, dusty, destructive windstorms were harrowing and not something I‘ll not soon forget. I listened on #audio (fantastic!) and read my copy to make sure I finished. My eleven-year-old and I both agree that we liked 96 Miles. Esplin has a solid voice and writing style that I feel would transfer very well to adult fiction. I‘ve seen some complaints that the antagonists are bit tame, but if Esplin‘s target audience is middle grade then I feel that is a small flaw in an otherwise well-rounded story. There are some truly suspenseful moments and some great character building. I found the end particularly solid.
This novel is strange, modern, and thoughtful. A spare and raw examination of “the portal” (social media), it is truth telling at a whole new level. Often crass, it is ultimately empathetic, emotional, and good. This book is one of a kind! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #Blackout
Trying to finish this today to #blackout my #BookspinBingo board for June! Weird and kinda wonderful.

I love this series! The backdrop of Iceland with its snow, its bitter cold, its darkness, its long winter-then spring/summer with its brilliant, radiant light was mesmerizing & held me spellbound.A Classic whodunit, with many voices narrating, some time shifts,& an intricate plot,it felt like a labyrinth to me.All the varying threads did come together in the end. I am so glad their are 3 more in the series!

It‘s 1939 and brutally cold in Berlin and a serial killer is stalking women. The Third Reich has forced nightly blackouts and Germany has crushed Poland. Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke of Berlin's Kripo has been chosen to solve the murder of Gerda Korzeny, a film star and once lover of Josef Goebbels.. Schenke's views of The Fuhrer and The Third Reich are at odds with the Nazis.
This collection of Black teen love stories was fun and satisfying. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#blackout
