Pickpick

@Aims42 @wanderinglynn I finished the final week of our #DonQuixoteBuddyRead a few days early. 😊

CoffeeNBooks I love that Quixote was so quick to give up his life as a knight-errant and put his all into being a shepherd, and I loved the long pastoral description of the new life he planned to live. And thus concludes the story of Don Quixote, knight-errant, who henceforth shall be known as Alonso Quixano the Good. 6y
JLaurenceCohen Great book 6y
Aims42 YAY!!!!!! Way to go!!! I‘m so glad we did a buddy read of this 😊 How accomplished do you feel?? 💪🏼 6y

CoffeeNBooks @Aims42 It was so nice to have someone to discuss with along the way, and it kept me from giving up, because I knew you were reading it too! I feel sooo accomplished having finished this book, in all of its 891 pages of splendor! 😂 6y
Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks haha, totally!! 🤣 Its nice to have a shorter/lighter book in my purse now 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Aims42 I'm definitely going to finish out the year with some shorter reads, lol! 😂 6y

Week #7 of the #DonQuixoteBuddyRead! One more week left, @Aims42 @wanderinglynn!

CoffeeNBooks I feel like Sancho really came into his own in this section with his fake governor position. He learned a lot about himself. I thought one of the most humorous things in this section was when they were supposedly flying, blindfolded, and Sancho realized that it didn't make sense that they could hear the people speaking as if they were right there, lol! 6y
CoffeeNBooks I was impressed with Quixote's words of wisdom for Sancho. It reminded me of Polonius' words of wisdom for Laertes in Hamlet. 6y
Aims42 I agree!! I was surprised by Sancho‘s governing style. I thought his judgement decisions seemed fair, which wasn‘t what I anticipated. I felt for him with the “doctor” who didn‘t want him to eat anything 🤣 Poor Sancho!! 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Aims42 I know, right?! Poor Sancho! 6y

@Aims42 @wanderinglynn Can you believe we're done with Week #6 of the #DonQuixoteBuddyRead already?! I really liked this section... (continued in comments)

CoffeeNBooks I liked the story of Quiteria & Basilio, "Quiteria was fated to Basilio, and Basilio to Quiteria..." ? The whole story of the Cave of Montesinos was quite interesting! ? And all the braying, lol!!! Poor Master Pedro's puppet show, "In a word, the Knight of the Rueful Figure is he by whom I and my puppets are ruefully disfigured." 6y
CoffeeNBooks And then Don Quixote stole the boat ???? I thought it was hilarious when he thought they'd passed the equinox, and Sancho responded with "I can see with my own eyes, that we have not moved five yards from the bank..." 6y
Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks I snorted with laughter at the puppet scene! 🤣🤣🤣 Oh, Don Quixote!! I liked the pricing system the puppet master created. And Sancho is a riot, he is the perfect ying to DQ‘s yang ☯️ 6y
Jo-eese Good commentary. 6y

Week #5 of #DonQuixoteBuddyRead: I think this fairly well sums up Don Quixote, knight-errant: "...what greater sign of disorder...can there be, than for a man to clap on a helmet full of curds, and then take it into his head, that some magician had liquefied his skull, and what more certain proof of fool-hardiness and wild madness, than for a person, in spite of all that can be said to him, to resolve to engage lions."
@Aims42 @wanderinglynn

Velvetfur Aaawww bless Don Quixote, I love him! 6y
Aims42 🤣🤣🤣 yep, that‘s our Don Quixote all right!! Are you still liking it? I‘ve had people ask me, “oh, you‘re still reading that?” Uh, yes 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Aims42 Yes! Just when I start thinking I might get tired of it, Don Quixote embarks on another ridiculous adventure, lol! 6y

Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks Haha! That‘s exactly me too 🤣 6y
Bklover This is why I love this place. Someone always inspires me to read something I wouldn‘t normally dream of reading!❤️ 6y
Adam86uk This book is so funny. When he first turned up at the inn, with a cardboard visor and they all just laughed at his chivalrous words. Had me in stitches 😂😂 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Adam86uk Yes! This book has been much more humorous than I had expected! I love how anything that doesn't fit within Don Quixote's paradigm he assumes is enchanted in order to fool him, lol! 6y
Adam86uk @CoffeeNBooks Yes! Its amazing how the humour translates, from a book that's over 400 years old! I guess it's the first ever sitcom. 6y

Week #4 of the #DonQuixoteBuddyRead- I can't believe we're halfway through @Aims42 @wanderinglynn!

CoffeeNBooks
Poor Don Quixote, and his continued belief that everything is enchanted. And poor Sancho trying to convince him that he's not enchanted but has been taken away by the curate and barber in disguise.

I think I see how some of the side-stories are tied together- sort of. I'm trying to wrap my brain around them all. I should have been taking notes while I read!

I'm curious to see what Part II is going to be like!
6y
Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks Wooohooooo halfway mark!! 🙌🏻 I felt bad for DQ being “enchanted” and put in the cage, but I did laugh at him thinking that enchantments in this age are different than what he‘s read 🤣 6y

Week #3 of the #DonQuixoteBuddyRead is in the books! 📚 @Aims42 @wanderinglynn

Listening to Man of La Mancha this afternoon, which is loosely based on Don Quixote & Miguel de Cervantes. My mom has always loved musicals, so when she gave me her record collection, there were several records of musicals included. I remember listening to them all when I was growing up. My favorite was The Sound of Music!

CoffeeNBooks I feel like there were a lot of side stories to keep track of in this section, and I'm trying to figure out of they're there as stand-alone stories, or if they all fit together somehow and the threads that tie them together just went over my head. 6y
CoffeeNBooks I chuckle every time Don Quixote explains something away by saying it's enchanted, lol! He truly wants to believe things are the way he believes them to be! Poor guy thought he'd slain a giant when it was only some full wine skins. 🤣 And his belief that Sancho flew through the air when he travelled to El Toboso and back so quickly. 🤣

The story of Anselmo, Lotario, and Camila! 😯
6y
Aims42 Sooooooo many side stories LOL Maybe they‘ll make sense eventually. The wine skin story cracked me up 😂 Oh, Don Quixote! I‘m traveling to see my parents who live 4 hours away, getting a free trial of Audible just so I can stay on track. If I don‘t read a little everyday I loose track of what‘s happening 6y

Velvetfur Oohh I'd love to see that film! But I want to get around to reading the book properly first, I started but didn't get very far, just a few chapters.... Shame! 🔔 6y
AmyG I loved The Sound of Music and West Side Story. 6y
CoffeeNBooks @AmyG Me, too! I have both of those on dvd, and the soundtracks on record and cd! 6y
inthegreensandblues I remember this record! My dad had it when I was a kid. 💙 6y
jmtrivera I loooooove The Sound of Music. 6y

CoffeeNBooks I like that Sancho has started talking back to Don Quixote, standing up for himself to some degree. Yet, he still believes Quixote will give him an island. I'm somewhat surprised that Quixote remains an eternal optimist, "that our adversity having lasted so long, our prosperity must be now at hand." I loved his belief that the barber's basin was a helmet of gold, lol! ? 6y
Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks HAHA! I laughed at that part too! I love the imagery that this book provides. I can totally picture some of the scenes with Sancho and Don Quixote lol Any idea, is there a movie? I saw one on Netflix, but I don‘t have much hope it‘s good 6y

@wanderinglynn @Aims42 I just finished Week 1 of the #DonQuixoteBuddyRead! My thoughts in the comments below... #classicliterature

CoffeeNBooks
I love that Don Quixote is such an avid reader, and that he lives out his adventures based on the adventure books he's read. I liked Book I more than Book II and what I've read so far of Book III, but I don't really know why. I love the humor throughout.
6y
CoffeeNBooks I laugh every time I read about one of his misguided beliefs, based on his books about knights- things like his belief that knights don't eat very often, because rarely in his books do the knights eat. 🤣 I love his commitment to Dulcinea, even though she doesn't exist, and his mistaking inns for castles. Even though he's often misguided in his beliefs, at least he's committed. 😂 6y
Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks Okay, firstly, this book is WAY MORE FUNNY THAN I WAS ANTICAPATING!! I‘m so happy about that, I‘m getting used to the tiny font and aren‘t re-reading the same sentence too often anymore 🤣 I stared highlighting my favorite passages/quotes from our Knight-errant...see below 6y
See All 9 Comments
Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks Don Quixote: “Peace, Sancho, where didst thou see or hear that a knight errant was brought to justice for the greatest homicides he had committed?” Sancho: “I know nothing of your hominy seeds” 😂😂 6y
CoffeeNBooks @Aims42 Yes! I underlined that one, too! Hilarious! 6y
Velvetfur Oohh I've started reading this twice over the years, but I do love what I've read and I agree it's very funny! I'll read it properly one day 😅 6y
Aims42 @CoffeeNBooks The last time I tried to read this, I got as far as page 80ish. So glad I‘m giving it a second go. I‘m confident I‘ll actually finish it this time 👍🏻🤞🏼 6y
jmtrivera @CoffeeNBooks I agree! Don Quixote is sweetly hilarious! 6y
Nevermore88 I have that pen! Lol 6y

I‘ve wanted to read this for a while but have been putting it off as I think it may be hard going, but it looks so lovely

tpixie Look for others reading the book. I just saw someone‘s post this weekend saying they were going to read 100 pages a week 6y
Lel2403 Good idea... 6y
tpixie But now can‘t find. I wonder if there is more that one DQ book you can post under? 6y

cocoteroah It is a classic in Spain, i read it as child but it was an assigment in highschool so i didn't enjoy it. 20 years later i found it amazing, its like wine the older the better 6y
Lel2403 @cocoteroah ah at 56 I should love it ❤️😂 6y

The schools in our district are out today because it's our local university's homecoming weekend, starting with the homecoming parade this morning. I'm just enjoying an extra day to stay home and read. 😁 #DonQuixoteBuddyRead

gradcat School holidays for university homecoming? Cool...never heard of that before, lol! 6y
Lynnsoprano Are you in Gainesville? I know UF is closed today for homecoming, even the agricultural research centers around the state. Hubby is retired UF ag faculty. He usually goes to a first Friday seminar at the center where he worked, but there‘s none today. 6y
CoffeeNBooks @gradcat We're in a fairly small town, and the parade route this morning shuts down some of the roads people need to travel on to get their kids to school. Also, tons of kids miss school because they go to the parade. 6y

CoffeeNBooks @Lynnsoprano Yep! I'm not a gator fan (my degrees are from FSU), but this is the one day a year I'm a gator fan because I get to enjoy an extra day off. 🧡💙 6y
mom2bugnbee @Lynnsoprano Had no idea! My hubby is from Gville. We were married there & I went to grad school there, even participated in a HC parade once upon a time. My brother is back on campus this weekend. 6y
CoffeeNBooks @mom2bugnbee That's awesome! What a small world! 6y
gradcat @CoffeeNBooks Oh, wow...you‘re having a parade as well...I need to move! 6y
Lynnsoprano @CoffeeNBooks @mom2bugnbee I love Gainesville even tho we never lived there. I always liked to go along when hubby had meetings on campus. Just there a few weeks ago, for a memorial service, unfortunately. 6y
Lynnsoprano @gradcat It‘s a Florida thing, I think. When I taught at a private school that was a football power, we got a half day off for homecoming and another day off if they made the state championship 😂 6y
mom2bugnbee @Lynnsoprano @gradcat I think you're right. I grew up outside of Daytona Beach, & our HS homecoming parade was a huge deal & we got out of school after the pep rally. Maybe b/c it's never too cold for a parade in FL? 😉 6y
gradcat @Lynnsoprano @mom2bugnbee I live in the Deep South (Louisiana), but we never got off for homecoming events...but I do know why: 1. No major universities + 2. I‘m a million years old? 6y
Lynnsoprano @gradcat 😂Welcome to #olderthandirt Littens! 6y
gradcat @Lynnsoprano Hiya! Here‘s me—tickled pink to be an #olderthandirt Litten! Just awesome 😎 (edited) 6y
