julesG The authors' notes. They are a bit hedgy. If, as they claim, the first 100 pages of the original manuscript were cut for the UK publisher, but all other publishers got his original final draft, why has this OV never been published then? Nor come up in any way? Even the authors didn't have access to it. That's what I've been puzzling over. 6y
Rachbb3 @julesG Great question, I was wondering about that myself. I would love to read the version of Dracula Stoker originally turned in. 6y
BeansPage @julesG @Rachbb3 that is a great question and I will have to do some more research into the subject. 6y
BookwormAHN @julesG @Rachbb3 I was also wondering that. And also I if the Icelandic version was ever translated into English. 6y

Question #4 Decre Stoker is indeed the great-grandnephew of Bram Stoker himself. Do you think this holds any weight with the fact that he is now writing Dracula novels?

#DraculBuddyRead
@BookBelle84 @Rachbb3 @julesG @WeeWeegieBookworm @BookwormAHN @rajithr @AlobelThee @Shaneyney @Larkken @Melli @jb72 @MellieAntoinete

julesG It probably adds a bit of emphasis to the story, especially when the authors say they used Stoker's manuscripts - which would be easier to obtain/have a look at as family members. 6y
BookBelle84 Yes I feel that being in that family he would have grown up surrounded by the stories and history which would give him an advantage when it comes to continuing on in the Dracula stories. I think he did a fantastic job and I don't believe anyone could have done better. 6y
BeansPage @BookBelle84 I totally feel the same way! I feel like Bram might be whispering in his ear at night and writing through him! 6y
Rachbb3 Yes, I think as a family member he had access to things someone else would not. And it worked! Fantastic book! 6y
BookwormAHN I think it was brilliant. It's definitely in the family. 6y

Question #3 all the different movies on Dracula has definitely put a different spin each to their own. Which Dracula movie is your favorite and why?

#DraculBuddyRead
@BookBelle84 @Rachbb3 @julesG @WeeWeegieBookworm @BookwormAHN @rajithr @AlobelThee @Shaneyney @Larkken @Melli @jb72 @MellieAntoinete

julesG Dracula Untold with Luke Evans. Simply because Dracula doesn't come across as too much of a douge in this one. Crazy in/for love still, but not this nearly unreasonable "must have her as MY bride at all costs". 6y
violettemeier Bram Stoker's Dracula is my favorite movie. I love the dark imagery, the actors, and the altered storyline. It was much better than the book. 6y
julesG I never liked Anne Rice's Lestat. Probably for the same reason as I don't like Dracula. And in the film he was played by the Scientology dwarf. 😵😵 6y

BeansPage @violettemeier oooo 😗 I 💕💕💕 BS's Dracula. My fav 😍 6y
BeansPage @julesG I loved Tom Cruise as Lestat. If you read the books, he was spot on! 6y
julesG I threw the book across the room. Granted, it was my first ever book in English and I was 14. I might have to give it another shot. 6y
BeansPage @julesG oh my! Lol I'd give them another shot. Many of them are very good. 6y
Rachbb3 @julesG My favorite is Dracula Untold as well. Great movie. 6y
BookwormAHN Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of my favorite movies 🖤 I also liked Interview and Dracula Untold. @julesG I don't like Tom Cruise personally but @TheReadingMermaid is right he was a perfect Lestat. 6y

Question #2 most people think that Bram Stoker's Dracula novel was the first vampire novel, but in fact it was the second. 😲 Carmilla by Joseph La Fanu was indeed the first. did anyone know this? Has anyone read this book?

#DraculBuddyRead
@BookBelle84 @Rachbb3 @julesG @WeeWeegieBookworm @BookwormAHN @rajithr @AlobelThee @Shaneyney @Larkken @Melli @jb72 @MellieAntoinete

KarouBlue Cool fact! I have not read it. 6y
julesG Knew that fact (I'm an encyclopedia nerd, so I must have read it in Wikipedia or the Encyclopedia Britannica), but haven't read the book. 6y
violettemeier Yes, I knew. No, I have not read it. Actually, vampiric creatures have been in world mythology for thousands of years. Every culture has a version of a vampire. I did my senior thesis in undergrad on vampires. I used to love them...lol 6y
See All 10 Comments
julesG @violettemeier You 'used to love them'? What happened? 6y
BeansPage @julesG they started sparkling!!! 😂😂😂 6y
julesG @TheReadingMermaid Forgot about those disco balls. Mea culpa! 6y
Rachbb3 I didn't know that. I wonder if the book is any good? 🤔 6y
BeansPage @Rachbb3 I have it on my Amazon wishlist. Hopefully I'll be getting it soon and let you know! 6y
BookwormAHN I also still need to read Carmilla. 6y
julesG @BookwormAHN @Rachbb3 @violettemeier @MellieAntoinette - there is also a poem by Goethe about a vampire that was published in the late 18th century, before Carmilla. 6y

Question #1 so Nana Ellen turned out to be a good guy after all. Unfortunately she was doomed to a terrible fate. How do you think Dracul's relationship with Nana Ellen spins on The Love story between Mina Harker and Dracula? Final thoughts on Nanna Ellen?

#DraculBuddyRead
@BookBelle84 @Rachbb3 @julesG @WeeWeegieBookworm @BookwormAHN @rajithr @AlobelThee @Shaneyney @Larkken @Melli @jb72 @MellieAntoinete

julesG Nanna Ellen, the tragic heroine of the story. Of course I keep hoping Declan will rescue her once Dracula has been impaled. 6y
KarouBlue I think Nene be tired and she all I‘m gonna take a nap from all this drama! 🤣🤣 J/K of course! 6y
julesG Dracul/a is such a typical male with an inflated ego. I've said that before, I know. If I cannot have that toy, nobody will have it. After his long life he should know that you cannot buy love in any way. This is actually what annoys me the most about Dracul/a. Plenty of women fall at his feet, but there is the one that he just has to have - and only to destroy her. Here, Dracul, have your own Lego set! *pats_him_on_head* 6y

BeansPage @julesG lmao totally! He's such a typical spoiled brat! 6y
Rachbb3 She did turn out to be good, and I was glad for that. Hopefully she will be avenged. I hate Dracula, I really do. 😆 6y
BookwormAHN @julesG She was definitely the tragic heroine. 6y

This was good. It had the dark, Gothic feels of the original story, it had new elements, too.

It did not have sparkling vampires. 👿

Thank you for hosting the #DraculBuddyRead @TheReadingMermaid. Can't wait for the final discussion. I especially look forward to talking about the authors' notes.

#audioknitting #knittersoflitsy

GingerAntics Thank god for a lack of sparkly vampires. I‘m still trying to figure out why anyone thought that was a good idea. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 6y
julesG @GingerAntics Well, she could hardly let them burn in the sun. Would have changed the plot immensely. 😂😂😂 6y
GingerAntics But it would have been amusing!!! lol Maybe not burn. They could have smoked, I suppose. lol 6y
See All 18 Comments
julesG @GingerAntics Making him smoking hot. 😂😂😂😂😂 6y
GingerAntics 🤦🏼‍♀️ Maybe they get really cold in the sun and that‘s why he smokes. 🤣 6y
julesG @GingerAntics We should co-author a YA vampire (love) story. 6y
GingerAntics Oh that would be hilarious!!! 🤣😂🤣 Would it be serious or a parody of the genre? 6y
julesG @GingerAntics Also, if he gets cold in the sun, the sparkling is due to condensation. All that water glistening on his body. 😂😂😂😂😂 6y
GingerAntics Good thinking. Yes. Of course. 🤣😂🤣 6y
julesG @GingerAntics Total serious and by that hilarious. We'd have accurate historical and scientific information, of course. 6y
GingerAntics Of course. I see this going very well. 6y
julesG Oh goodness, I could fill a page with hilarious ideas right now. 6y
Kaye Whatcha making ? The colors are so pretty. 6y
julesG @kaye Thank you! It was supposed to be a shawl with a nearly square shape. Well, supposed. It's still a nearly square shaped shawl, but with a turtleneck. I'm nearly done. I use alpaca wool. 6y
Kaye You hav such knitting talent. When did you learn and who taught you ? I took a beginner class back about 35 years ago , so I learned to make slippers. That‘s about as far as my talent goes and I haven‘t done it in years so I might have forgotten by now. 6y
julesG @kaye My mother used to knit a lot and I learned from her. In the worst way possible, though. Blunt needles, re-used yarn,... Anyway, I think I started around the age of 6. I remember being quite proficient at knitting before we got to it in our compulsory needlework classes when I was 8. I learned to crochet, too. But never used it. I taught myself to crochet properly about 6 years ago. Needlework classes and my family taught me all sorts of.. 6y
julesG @Kaye ...fibre crafts. From sheep to pullover (and stew, if you must know) - I was brought up learning shearing, caring for the wool, spinning, plying, knitting, crochet, weaving, making bobbin lace, embroidery, hand sewing, machine sewing, mending clothes, making clothes,... Back then I hated it. Now I enjoy having all this knowledge. 6y
Kaye Wow, that‘s great that you‘ve learned so many craft skills so far. I‘ve heard in some places they teach knitting in school. Our library has a knitting group where you can come to learn more skills. It‘s quite a tiny group, but our town isn‘t big , and we have no newspaper or ways for them to advertise it, unless someone sees the sign in 5e library. I can crochet well, and used to like embroidery. I taught myself those things from books. 6y
