The old myths are tricky, and they can catch any of us in their trap. Yes, it‘s racist to pass policies that we know will harm Black people. At the same time, it is also racist to ignore the ways those same policies hurt poor white people—because racism‘s myths are designed to keep Black and white people segregated so they cannot come together to transform a system that doesn‘t serve most of us. If we‘re going to be anti-racist and⬇️

So-called “election integrity” measures have been introduced in states with long histories of voter suppression, using the contemporary tools of voter roll purges or voter ID requirements to narrow the voting pool and reduce the potential power of a multiethnic voting coalition. I call this reality James Crow, Esquire—the result of Jim Crow‘s son going to law school and coming back to undermine democracy through more sophisticated means. Is it⬇️

If we‘re going to beat James Crow, we have to connect all the people who are impacted by these attacks. Jim Crow was brought down by a moral fusion movement during America‘s Second Reconstruction in the 1960s, but his son went to law school and came back to state⬇️ 2h

Feeling proud of myself 🤓 Revisited this after 5 years. (It was one of the 1st books I ever logged here!) My first go-around was extremely challenging & most of Davis‘s analysis went over my head. But since then I have learned a lot about Marxism & the labor movement, & I‘m happy to report that I was able to follow the argument this time around! Can confirm it is a work of true genius 🤯

One of the most damnable features of our common life is the way we talk about poverty, as if it‘s an anomaly and not a feature of our economic system.

Pickpick

A well-researched book on the narcotics trade, covering everything from production in South America to trafficking through Central America and consumption in the U.S. and Europe. The author clearly explains the economics of the trade, why current control methods are failing, and explores better strategies for mitigation. It‘s an engaging, insightful, and accessible read.

My #Roll100 book choices for April. This year's sociopolitical theme is providing a very informative yet steep learning curve. Which is exactly what I needed.

What‘s happening now all falls under the Neoliberalism play book doused with fascism. We‘ve been heading in this direction for decades. The Cheeto just put it into overdrive. #Thewholethingithinkitssick

It's OK to be angry about capitalism? Phew! Thank fuck for that! 😅

I got this from the library as much to validate the decision of whichever librarian it was who decided to order this in as I did to actually read it. I wasn't sure that I would read it as, a) it's about five years old and things have moved on (in a hell-in-a-handcart way) and, b) Bernie's preaching to the converted with me. But, I read the first few pages and think I'll continue.

willaful I've been doing that too! I almost never read print but I borrow all the resistance books. 2w
Bookwomble @willaful It's a low-energy strategy of resistance I can commit to! 😄 2w
