Bailedbailed

About six hours into the audiobook and I just couldn‘t take anymore of Arthur. I‘m bailing for now. Arthur feels so preachy, so condescending to an invisible audience (which must mean the reader), when he‘s talking about or to David the Yeti. I love David and I don‘t necessarily disagree with Arthur. I just don‘t like how it‘s done. Actions would speak louder than words here. Maybe I‘ll try again someday.

Traci1 Did you read House in the Cerulean Sea? If so, how did you feel about that one? I've not read this one yet, but I love Cerulean Sea and wonder how they compare. 13h
Texreader @Traci1 I loved it! 12h

Traci1 @Texreader hmm well that's disappointing then. I have it on my christmas wish list but maybe I'd be better to borrow it. 10h
GingerAntics Arthur has a big phoenix moment in there one where he needs to burn. He‘s better after that. He was really struggling before that. Things get better with everyone after that. 10h
Texreader @GingerAntics Did this occur again, after the appearance before the highest committee? 5h
Texreader @Traci1 It really could have been the audiobook version turned me off. That‘s why I listened to it for so long hoping it was just the way it was being narrated. But the narration was good. It just got on my nerves. Perhaps the book is different. But looking at the reviews here on litsy I don‘t think I‘m alone. 5h

Sigh. It‘s not you, Orbital, it‘s me. But maybe it‘s you, just a little. (Also maybe audio was a poor choice for me with this one.)

I was enticed by the Booker win and an immediately available audio copy on Libby. This sounded like something I‘d enjoy: meditative and thoughtful. I like meditative and thoughtful. I don‘t need a page-turning plot, but I did want some semblance of a story. Halfway through I‘m still struggling to remember ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) …who some of the characters are, and I have SO much else to read. So it‘s goodbye, at least for now. 3d
BarbaraJean @dabbe Yes!! I hate bailing, and I need the reminder that it‘s okay to put it down if it‘s not working for me. 1d

DNF around 100 pages.

I was really liking this one—the audio is fabulous—but then I suspected something would happen that is an absolute no for me. (I‘ll post a spoiler in the comments). I did some research, confirmed my suspicions, and then read spoiler blogs to figure out how this ends.

It was a really great thriller, but will set this to the side so I don‘t become very emotional.

Good choice, @LiteraryinPA for #AuldLangSpine , but I‘m too chicken to finish!

Librarybelle TW for animal cruelty. I missed the allusion to animal cruelty at the start of the book, when Anna is reminiscing about the past. I reached the part of her birthday party where her mom gives her a kitten. I can read anything else but animal death and animal cruelty. Hard pass. 4d
monalyisha Oooof. It‘s good to know your limits. Glad you spotted it early! 4d

DGRachel @Librarybelle I honestly don‘t even remember that part. I must have fast forwarded or just tuned out. 4d
Librarybelle That‘s good, @DGRachel . 4d
Susanita Oh dear. That‘s a hard pass for me then. 4d
Librarybelle @Susanita I‘m not sure of the value of it in the story, even if it is briefly mentioned. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4d

I tried on multiple occasions to read this one. I made it to 25% and couldn't make myself finish. Never got into the story and didn't care about the characters. This is a DNF. #HailTheBail

Note: This is set in Cape Cod so I intended this to fulfill the #TwinPeaks prompt for this month (set in an iconic location). Hope to find another book to replace it. @Yuki_Onna

This might be a case of a “me issue” not a “book issue”, but I could not get into this. The three main characters didn‘t have much depth and I couldn‘t get a firm grip on the genre; some parts are fluffy, others are very dark. Perhaps a good one to borrow from the library before spending 30ish dollars. #HailTheBail

I don't particularly like reality TV shows, so I guess I'm not the right reader for a book about a reality TV show.
I appreciate that this is a critique of the genre, of consumerism, the increasing monetisation of all aspects of life, the intrusion of governments and private companies into personal spaces, and the intensification of the Society of the Spectacle, but 81 pages is enough for me to know I don't need this object ⬇️

Bookwomble ... lesson: I already deplore Marrs's targets.
It's definitely a "me not you" issue, and I wouldn't discourage anyone else from reading this if the concept appeals. I'm sorry that my Bail rating will negatively affect its Litsy approval score ?

BarbaraBB Interesting! I will read this one soon too and am curious to see where I‘ll end up! 6d
Bookwomble @BarbaraBB I see you liked his earlier novel, The Marriage Act, and this book is set in the same world so I'd guess you'll enjoy this one, too 😊 6d
