Less: A Novel | Andrew Sean Greer
A breakout romantic comedy by the bestselling author of five critically acclaimed novels Who says you can't run away from your problems? You are a failed novelist about to turn fifty. A wedding invitation arrives in the mail: your boyfriend of the past nine years is engaged to someone else. You can't say yes--it would be too awkward--and you can't say no--it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of invitations to half-baked literary events around the world. QUESTION: How do you arrange to skip town? ANSWER: You accept them all. What would possibly go wrong? Arthur Less will almost fall in love in Paris, almost fall to his death in Berlin, barely escape to a Moroccan ski chalet from a Saharan sandstorm, accidentally book himself as the (only) writer-in-residence at a Christian Retreat Center in Southern India, and encounter, on a desert island in the Arabian Sea, the last person on Earth he wants to face. Somewhere in there: he will turn fifty. Through it all, there is his first love. And there is his last. Because, despite all these mishaps, missteps, misunderstandings and mistakes, Less is, above all, a love story. A scintillating satire of the American abroad, a rumination on time and the human heart, a bittersweet romance of chances lost, by an author The New York Times has hailed as "inspired, lyrical," "elegiac," "ingenious," as well as "too sappy by half," Less shows a writer at the peak of his talents raising the curtain on our shared human comedy.

This was sweet, smart and well written satire (even getting meta fiction towards the end) dealing with aging, love, loss and the strange travel related circumstances our protagonist finds himself in. It took me a bit to get into it, but glad I did.

I read this in January. I have had this book for at least one year if not more on my shelf. Finally decided to read it and am glad I did. It has two things I like books and travel. Authur Less decides to accept many different types of Literary events around the world to help him cope with the fact his boyfriend is getting married but not to him. I enjoyed all his escapades in the different places he visits. #bookcover

3.5 stars. If Greer had not added that *wink* at the end. This would be a cool 2.5 - 3 stars. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2970078530

Reggie I liked this one a lot because he didn‘t die of AIDS, he wasn‘t someone‘s sassy best friend, and he wasn‘t the serial killer. It‘s hard not to read at least one of those attached to a gay narrative. 1w

I‘d read that this gets better so I kept with it but I wish I knew what was ‘revealed‘ at the end, at the beginning; I probably would have read it differently. It‘s a so-so as it did pick up a bit for me over halfway but I was bored with it mostly and don‘t get all the reviews saying it‘s funny 🤷‍♀️ ⭐️⭐️

RachelO I‘ve just looked back at some of the other reviews- think I can safely skip this one! Hope your next book‘s amazing! 3w
Cathythoughts I‘ve never been drawn to this one 🤷🏼‍♀️... mixed reviews 👍🏻 3w

2. I was born in the morning and I will be there in a few minutes.
3. Winter mostly. I like watching American football, and I like going snowshoeing. Although my favorite Olympic sports to watch are gymnastics and diving.

The last third of this book is excellent and 5 stars. If I had to choose for a book to start strong or finish strong, finishing strong is where I would land. However, the first two-thirds... for me it was the reading equivalent of walking up a muddy hill. Naval gazing in the extreme, but the last third packs a punch and has some powerful and poignant insights.

This was probably my worst read of 2019. I‘m not saying it‘s a bad book; maybe I just didn‘t get it because the MC is a middle-aged gay man and I‘m not — but I was just so bored. Less might be the most passive and boring character I‘ve ever read about, always pitying himself and not taking any action. There‘s little plot but many descriptions that started to bore me, though some of the dialogue is nice. And boy, did the author get Berlin wrong 😅.

I found this story to be boring and repetitive. I listened to the audiobook and found my mind wandering so that I had to listen to certain parts a couple different times to find out what was going on just to realize nothing was going on. I wanted to like this one but it just didn‘t work for me. ⭐️⭐️

“Shut the fuck up! Enjoy the fucking sunset on your fucking camels! Jesus!”

It is, after all, almost a miracle they are here. It‘s that they‘ve survived everything in life, humiliations and disappointments and heartache and missed opportunities... bad jobs and bad sex and bad drugs, all the trips and mistakes and face-plants of life, to have... made it here... So yes. As with almost every sunset, but with this one in particular: shut the fuck up.

Writing like I‘ve never read before. “What was it like to live with genius? Like living alone. Everything had to be sacrificed for the work. Plans had to be canceled, meals had to be delayed; Keep the habit. Did you love it, the rain dance every day? Only when it rained. Where did the genius come from? Where did it go? Like allowing another lover into the house to live with you, someone you‘d never met but whom you knew he loved more than you.”

By the end, Arthur Less is in tears sobbing in his seat, and he thinks he has been sobbing quietly until the lights come up and the woman seated beside him turns and says, “Honey, I don‘t know what happened in your life, but I am so so sorry,” and gives him a lilac-scented embrace. Nothing happened to me, he wants to say to her. Nothing happened to me. I‘m just a homosexual at a Broadway show.

I wasn't sure that this book would be my thing, but I found it hilarious and poignant and cringe-inducing. The ending is ho-hum, but overall I found it to be a pleasant audiobook accompaniment to household chores. I alternated this one with Black Leopard, Red Wolf, which was a strange juxtaposition, and The Odyssey, which was apt.

Hard to rate: it's a love-hate relationship. It's like a pretentious piece of crap that worms its way to your heart; you wonder how it glides through the sappy parts, but it does. I like the losses, from the lover to the luggage, & I feel I'm gonna be thinking about the journeys though right now they feel lacking. Ironically I also had the same feeling with Less when he read Proust: I too felt cheated by the abruptness of the ending.

I was often annoyed that Arthur thought his life was so insignificant and humdrum, when that was not the case. But I also related to the very human conflicts of self-doubt. And I think that was the author's point - we never see ourselves as others see us. As a travel junkie, I could have used more time in each place and more about those cultures instead of very basic and stereotypical descriptions, but the story itself is full of humor and heart.

I was expecting to really love this instead I just found the entire story to be ok with a good ending. It has many layers but ultimately the character Less ends up becoming like his own fictional character "Swift", hard to feel sorry for. The end ties it together nicely though. #49 #2019

This was something that I normally pick up, but I did for a book club. I was not all that interested in the characters. Maybe because the main character was self sorrowful. I did like the places that he traveled, but he never really fully solved his sorrow. Then again that could be one of the lessons the reader was to learn.

Really well written book about a man approaching 50 whose long term relationship has just ended. Also his latest novel has been rejected. He travels around the world on a writing mission, trying to resurrect his self esteem and rewrite his novel. He is an endearing character so you happily travel with him and by the end you feel you know him. Thoroughly recommend

For #BFCr2 - a book I own for every two virtual drops from my library. ...Pride month was a good reason to read this book, it‘s an upcoming IRL bookclub pick, and there is that Pulitzer thing. Reviews are mixed so I was expecting to just move through it. However, I enjoyed this book, the witty writing style, and bits of philosophy there in. I‘m an eat-pray-love kind of girl and this is essentially that for a middle-aged white American gay guy.

I liked this less than I‘d hoped I would.😆I never really connected with Arthur. He was just a bit...bland. His fumbles were amusing & the Germany section was probably my favorite, but I felt like I never really got inside his hurt/confusion/inability to know what he wanted—or whatever was going on internally. The choice of narrator felt a bit contrived, too—so although this elicited a wry smile here & there, overall it was disappointing.
