When I originally read Jane and the Twelve Days of Christmas for my #JaneandtheYear2020 Readalong I remarked that this quote described my 2020. This time reading, after the House Fire, it spoke to me because books have been such a comfort.

#JaneandTheExcellentReadalong Christmas in July starts tomorrow #Pemberlittens!

This is one of my favorites in the series. Goodreads tells me I first read over the 12 Days of Christmas 2018/2019. I had lost track of this series and hadn't read several of the middle books. Jane 12 made me want to reread whole series which I did with #JaneAndTheYear2020. It's become a Christmas Tradition. Looking forward to #JaneInJuly. 📖🎁🎄

Crinoline_Laphroaig Of all the Being a Jane Austen Mystery Series, this one and June's Jane and the Canterbury Tale I've read the least. Having only read for #JaneAndTheYear2020 so looking forward to reading a 2nd time.

TheBookHippie I am picking up my copy at the library tomorrow! They have TWO copies! There is no rhyme or reason as to which books in this series they carry! So bizarre!

Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie my Library has none in print and only No. 12 & 14 digitally. 🤷‍♀️ 11mo

1. Standout moments? Really?
Is there any other than Lord Harold? 😭

2. We know Jane's story, but what's
your Fantasy Ending for her and Lord Harold?

3. What's Jane and Lord Harold's Ship Name?
Jaarold? Or are Ship Names just a big NO for you?

4. Favourite character is obviously Lord Harold. 2nd Favorite?

5. Favorite quote?

6. Something you learned
about Jane or her time?

7. Random thoughts?

#JaneandtheExcellentReadalong

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ I put off finishing because from #JaneandtheYear2020 knew Lord Harold, The Gentleman Rogue dies at the end. Even knowing it's coming still had me 😭

2️⃣ As a #Janeite I know Jane's life story. Had she married we would probably have never gotten her books. But still I want her and Lord Harold to have secretly wed, continuing to solve mysteries, and Jane still having time to writing books. One can dream.

14mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ Jaarold doesn't seem to be grand enough. I

4️⃣ Really liked brother Frank in this one. He's again added another word to my vocabulary - havey- cavey.
14mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣So many good quotes! “You cry, dear? Waste. Should've married you years ago.” .......“Promise me . . . you will write. Heroine—” 14mo

Crinoline_Laphroaig Pray do not stumble over your mother in the passage,” he added as I made for the door. “She has been listening at the keyhole this quarter- hour at least.”

"The moon is high; and when the lady in question is Miss Austen, it does not signify how long I wait.”

“Promise me . . . you will write. Heroine—”

6️⃣ Maria Fitzherbert. Plus I fell down a Google rabbit hole of the history of Itchen ferry.
14mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ Rather obsessed w/ Jane's gown and want to Cosplay it - 'the cunning design of opened lapels, split bodice buttoned down the centre, and delicate bows tied beneath the right breast. The high white ruff à la reine Elizabeth, with Vandyke pleating, Equestrian Hat, and dove- grey paisley shawl, figured in black and gold. '

*Glad doubled up #janeandtheprisonerofwoolhouse and Ghosts of Netley since both are set in Southampton and have Naval storylines. After this we are off to @janeaustenshouse in Chawton.

TheBookHippie First I want the dress. And yes had she ever married we wouldn‘t have the gift of her writing how sad is that?!?! 14mo
TheBookHippie I suspect that too much breeding is at the heart of the trouble--but too much breeding is the lot of all women who marry young, particularly when they are so fortunate as to make a love-match. Elizabeth Bridges, third daughter of a baronet, was but eighteen when she wed, and only five-and-thirty when she passed from this life. With her strength of character, she ought to have lived to be eighty. 14mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie such a great dress! 14mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie I'll take my chances financially as a spinster writer rather than dying after giving birth to my 11th child like Jane's sister in law. 14mo
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig right the more I read of that time the more I‘m convinced single was the way to go …however money 😵‍💫 14mo
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig also reminded me of religious practices today of some who have to have children til they die or menopause 😵‍💫… 14mo
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig I want to make all these dresses and have a proper tea party 🤣 14mo

#Pemberlittens Posting #janeandtheexcellentreadalong
early because I've got a lot on tomorrow.

1️⃣ Invitation to Chatsworth
2️⃣“My good fellow—if you do not leave off that dreadful noise at once, I shall be forced to call you out; and though it has been my habit, in affairs of honour, never to aim for the heart—in your case, my dear sir, I should be sorely tempted.”
3️⃣ Cassandra with the Chamberpot ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ The End. Last time I read this was for #JaneAndTheYear2020 and I had forgotten. This is normal for me. I remember character storylines but the killer I forget. Which is nice because reveal is a surprise.
5️⃣ Stillroom Maid Recipes. I really enjoyed them tucked into story.
6️⃣ Eat nothing but that doesn't mean I can't have Whisky becore bed. Plus if I have a good night's sleep I feel like I can do anything. ⬇️
1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ Having had mother who sounded a lot like Mrs Austen I am really good at tuning that out. Really loud music or in this case singing gets on my nerves after awhile.
8️⃣ Picnic in the garden. While enjoyed see the house when we visited Chatsworth, I loved the gardens.
9️⃣ This is one of my favorites in the Series because of having been to Chatsworth I can just see those scenes in my mind.

Crinoline_Laphroaig I really wish you could edit comments on Litsy cause I just saw typo ^Whisky before bed. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
kspenmoll I am still reading ; about halfway through. Will come back when finished! 1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @kspenmoll no worries! Whenever you are ready. 1y
suvata @Crinoline_Laphroaig Please add me to your list. I am just beginning Stillroom Maid but I‘m a fast reader and I‘ll catch up. 1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @suvata will do! It's read at your own pace so pop back whenever and join in wth discussion Questions. 1y
suvata 1. Standout moments: Finding out that the wounds were inflicted after death.
2. Favorite quote: “It is far more comfortable to throw the guilt upon mysteries one cannot understand, than upon a human being disturbingly like oneself.”
3. Favorite character: Jane, of course.
4. Anything surprised you: It surprised me in the very beginning, when the dead person turned out to be a woman dressed in men‘s clothing.
1y
suvata 5. Something you learned about Jane or her time: The excessive use of opioids is always a shocker when I read books from this period. Really? They gave laudanum to children.
6. Would You Rather: Eat the tart made of veggies, eggs, and brains and have courage to do anything you wanted or eat nothing after 3pm and sleep soundly: I will sleep soundly. No brains for me!
1y
suvata 7. Listen to Mr Cooper's off key singing or Mrs Austen's complaints: Both would be intolerable, but I guess it would be easier to ignore Mrs. Austen‘s complaints.
8. Be the Guest of Honour at a Chatsworth dinner party or spend the day in the gardens with a picnic lunch: Picnic in the garden, please.
1y
suvata 9. Any other random thoughts: I forgot how good these books are. I read the first four quite a while ago, and I‘m just now catching up on the rest of them.
1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @suvata we can picnic together! 1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @suvata Just love them so much! 1st few are a bit slow but they just get better and better. Another favorite of mine is 1y

#Pemberlittens we're off to Canterbury Races and doing a spot of gardening with November's
#JaneAndTheExcellentReadalong

Title references classic garden design from Alexander Pope: "In laying out a garden, the first and chief thing to be considered is the genius of the place."

The Gardener in me loved this one when I read for #JaneandtheYear2020 because it mentions one of my favorite garden designs - the HaHa. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Beautiful cover! It's just a bit dark which makes it hard to see in the photo. Jane is peering out from what I think is a Garden Folly. Will see if I remember correctly once I reread.⬇️

#Pemberlittens Here's this month's #JaneandtheExcellentReadalong Discussion Post.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ How dangerous Charades can be. Eliza being Eliza, which was also my favorite quote.
2️⃣ “Sew—cook—wash—what other tasks must be onerous to a girl of spirit, Eliza?” my uncle enquired, puzzling it out.
“Visits to elderly relations?
”“No, no—it must be one syllable!”
1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣Favorite Character - Lord Harold because he respects Jane's Intellect. Least Favorite - Judgemental Cassandra:
"Cassandra‘s goodness may be said to verge, with advancing age, upon prudery; and however respectable my sister‘s motives in the present case, her methods recalled the schoolroom."
1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ Who the murderer was. Originally read this for #JaneandtheYear2020 and apparently 2 years is about the length of time I can remember who did it.😆 (This happens for me with most Mysteries I reread. But it makes it feel like I'm reading for 1st time.) 1y
See All 12 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ Eye Potraits were definitely something new.
6️⃣ While interesting, I would find it creepy AF if some wore a potraits of my eye.
7️⃣ Start with Jane Austen Centre followed by a walk through Sydney Gardens.
8️⃣How much I love Lord Harold, when all the Harolds I've know in real life have been truly terrible people.
1y
Ruthiella I‘ll have to come back in a few days. I‘m only on chapter 7! 😬 But I will say the plot is really ticking along, which I appreciate. The pages are turning more rapidly than with the previous two. 1y
rubyslippersreads @Crinoline_Laphroaig I‘ve never known a real-life Harold, although I‘ve always been in love with Professor Harold Hill. 😄 1y
Sparklemn I just wanted to check in and let you know that I got behind with my reading. I plan to catch up in November and be back on schedule! 🤞 1y
SarahBookInterrupted I won‘t be able to join along this time. 1y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @rubyslippersreads perhaps I need to start keeping track of 'Good' Harolds. 1y
