10 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
In her seventh captivating adventure, Jane Austen finds her crime-solving mettle put to the test in a confounding case of intrigue, murder, and high treason. Among the haunted ruins of an ancient abbey, Jane is drawn into a shadow world of dangerous secrets and traitorous hearts where not only her life is at stakebut the fate of England. As Jane Austen stands before the abandoned ruins of Netley Abbey, she imagines that ghosts really do haunt the centuries-old monastery. But the green-cloaked figure who startles her is all too human and he bears an unexpected missive from Lord Harold Trowbridge, one of the British governments most trusted advisersand a man who holds a high place in Janes life.Trowbridge tells Jane about a suspected traitor in their midstand the disastrous consequences if she succeeds. But is Sophia Challoner, a beautiful widow with rumored ties to Emperor Bonaparte, really an agent of the enemy? Dispatched to Netley Lodge, Jane sets about gaining the confidence of the mysterious and intriguing lady even as Trowbridges grim prediction bears fruit: a British frigate is set afire and its shipwright found with his throat cut.Its clear that someone is waging a clandestine war of terror and murder. But before Jane can follow the trail of conspiracy to its source and unmask a calculating killer, the cold hand of murder will fall mercilessly yet againand suddenly Jane may find herself dying for her country. Elegantly intriguing, Jane and the Ghosts of Netley is a beautifully crafted novel of wit, character, and suspense that transports Jane and her many fans into a mystery of truly historical proportionsand a case that will test the amateur sleuths true colors under fire. (Being the 7th Jane Austen Mystery)

Jane Austen finds her crime-solving mettle put to the test in a confounding case of intrigue, murder, and high treason. Among the haunted ruins of an ancient abbey, Jane is drawn into a shadow world of dangerous secrets and traitorous hearts where not only her life is at stake--but the fate of England.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ I put off finishing because from #JaneandtheYear2020 knew Lord Harold, The Gentleman Rogue dies at the end. Even knowing it's coming still had me 😭

2️⃣ As a #Janeite I know Jane's life story. Had she married we would probably have never gotten her books. But still I want her and Lord Harold to have secretly wed, continuing to solve mysteries, and Jane still having time to writing books. One can dream.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ Jaarold doesn't seem to be grand enough. I

4️⃣ Really liked brother Frank in this one. He's again added another word to my vocabulary - havey- cavey.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣So many good quotes! “You cry, dear? Waste. Should've married you years ago.” .......“Promise me . . . you will write. Heroine—” 2y

Crinoline_Laphroaig Pray do not stumble over your mother in the passage,” he added as I made for the door. “She has been listening at the keyhole this quarter- hour at least.”

"The moon is high; and when the lady in question is Miss Austen, it does not signify how long I wait.”

“Promise me . . . you will write. Heroine—”

6️⃣ Maria Fitzherbert. Plus I fell down a Google rabbit hole of the history of Itchen ferry.

Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ Rather obsessed w/ Jane's gown and want to Cosplay it - 'the cunning design of opened lapels, split bodice buttoned down the centre, and delicate bows tied beneath the right breast. The high white ruff à la reine Elizabeth, with Vandyke pleating, Equestrian Hat, and dove- grey paisley shawl, figured in black and gold. '

*Glad doubled up #janeandtheprisonerofwoolhouse and Ghosts of Netley since both are set in Southampton and have Naval storylines. After this we are off to @janeaustenshouse in Chawton.

TheBookHippie First I want the dress. And yes had she ever married we wouldn‘t have the gift of her writing how sad is that?!?! 2y
TheBookHippie I suspect that too much breeding is at the heart of the trouble--but too much breeding is the lot of all women who marry young, particularly when they are so fortunate as to make a love-match. Elizabeth Bridges, third daughter of a baronet, was but eighteen when she wed, and only five-and-thirty when she passed from this life. With her strength of character, she ought to have lived to be eighty. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie such a great dress! 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie I'll take my chances financially as a spinster writer rather than dying after giving birth to my 11th child like Jane's sister in law. 2y
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig right the more I read of that time the more I‘m convinced single was the way to go …however money 😵‍💫 2y
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig also reminded me of religious practices today of some who have to have children til they die or menopause 😵‍💫… 2y
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig I want to make all these dresses and have a proper tea party 🤣 2y

#booksandcoffee. Began this book this morning, but was interrupted by a visit to the vet. Poe has not eaten, drunk water, or peed since Saturday. He is staying for hydration, blood work, x-rays. His breathing had been somewhat labored which a concern since he has always had a heart murmur. Appreciate good wishes, thought, prayers- thank you Littens. 💜

MicheleinPhilly ☹️ Best wishes for a speedy recovery. ❤️ 2y

Yesterday the light was really good for pictures in my apartment so I photographed all the books I‘ve read recently. This is the Jane Austen mystery I finished last week. I actually think it‘s one of my new faves—it was the 2nd book to take place in Southampton, so we got to see recurring townspeople. It also was more dealing with intrigue than murder. Also it set up a continuing storyline which seems very exciting. Can‘t wait to read book 8!
