Why Sinatra Matters | Pete Hamill
post image
Pickpick

Republished in honour of what would have been Sinatra's 100th birthday in 2015, this is a personal tribute to 'Ol Blue Eyes' himself. Although it obviously centres around the man & his career, it also covers Italian immigration into America & Sinatra's first brush with prejudice, the rise & fall of Prohibition (& by extension the Mob), & the Second World War. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf I'm not what you would call a Sinatra fan, he was more my mum's cup of tea, but I found this surprisingly interesting to read. It's fairly short at just under 200 pages but it's a good introduction if you have a longer biography about Sinatra to read (which I do).

The author was apparently a friend/acquaintance of the man before he died & his admiration & regard for Sinatra comes through his writing.

OutsmartYourShelf The focus is obviously on Sinatra's music, but I was surprised that his dealings with the Kennedys & the 'Rat Pack' were not covered here & I'm still not sure what the actual truth was when it comes to certain rumoured connections. A good read though. 4🌟

Bingo! #OffMyShelf “By a BIPOC author”

Possibly next to “Tar Baby”, the least trauma inducing novel from Morrison so far. Yes, bad things happen, but I also found this book to be a celebration. It‘s about a love triangle gone wrong and a murder, the historical wounds of those involved, but also about hope and love; a love note to New York City and the flowering of Black American culture in the mid 20th century.

wanderinglynn Yay! 🎉You are rocking it! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1mo

I can‘t seem to settle on my next book so I‘m going to see if a mystery will draw me in enough to stick with it.

#WhereAreYouMonday

Today I find myself in 1920s New York City. Optimism is in the air. The war to end all wars is over and Black Americans have more opportunity than ever in the North.

TheBookHippie One of my favorite Morrisons! 1mo
Ruthiella @TheBookHippie I‘m on a mission to read all her novels! 1mo
TheBookHippie @Ruthiella oh I can‘t wait to see what your favorites are!! I‘ve read them all. 1mo

Ruthiella @TheBookHippie I don‘t know if any will top Beloved, the only one I‘ve read twice (so far). After this one I have four more to go. 1mo
Ruthiella @TheBookHippie Do you have a favorite? Or top three? 🤔 1mo
TheBookHippie @Ruthiella The Bluest Eye, Jazz & Song of Solomon. 1mo
Billypar I really liked this one, though Beloved is at the top of my list too. Paradise is my 2nd favorite. The Bluest Eye is on my shelf so will finally read it this year. 1mo
Ruthiella @Billypar Paradise will come after Jazz because I also own a copy. That‘s encouraging to hear it is a favorite of yours. I read The Bluest Eye in the ‘90s, so I really need to revisit it. 1mo
Reggie I love Beloved sooooo much. But there are a couple of passages about a mom and then another about a sofa from The Bluest Eye that come back to me over and over again. 1mo
Ruthiella @Reggie Beloved gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. I definitely need to re-read every thing up to then, however, because it‘s been 30 years since I first read them and I have very little memory of plot or scenes. 1mo

Swing: A Mystery | Rupert Holmes
Mehso-so

A grieving jazz man unravels a series of baffling events in 1940s San Francisco. You have to like music to enjoy this rather simple story. The audio book has a noir edge to the narration that was unearned. It calls itself a mystery but is more of a detective story. You could read this, or you could read something better.
