A colonel and his wife ask Phryne to check on their daughter, who they worry is being poisoned by her husband. Phryne travels to Australia and finds herself investigating not only the situation with the colonel's daughter, but other crimes as well, including a drug ring involving a Russian ballet family.

Phryne sets out to solve a disappearance and a murder and in the process takes her plane out to the mountains in Australia (near Talbotville). I enjoy the series mainly because of the historical setting e.g. the Green Mill was an actual dance hall in Melbourne.

Decent-ish continuation to the series, if the mystery was a bit odd.

Enjoyable story, but not the strongest mystery - Phryne doesn't investigate the murder until well over halfway through the book; in the meantime she and her adopted family investigate some smaller, unrelated crimes.

Phryne provides excellent entertainment as usual, but cold comfort, I‘m sad to say. Tested positive for Covid so I‘m masked up in the bedroom reading. Not feeling very festive, I‘m afraid. Still, the tree looks lovely.

Chrissyreadit yes lovely! and OH NO!!! how are you feeling? 11mo

On the homebound train. Can't wait for the weekend.
Sorry for the long silent, especially to my fellow #LotRChapterADay readers. It's an hellish period. I hope things will look up and in the new year, though.

I hope to finish Return of the King over Christmas. I'm behind with #TolkienChristmas but l expect to catch up tonight.
I have two #NetGalley ARCs expiring before the year ends, will probably manage to read just one.

Let's keep up! 💪😁

Am on a Phryne Fisher kinda kick recently. This book is as entertaining as the first with more concentration on the mystery this time.
If there is a small quibble - there were a couple of characters named Jack.... couldn't the author have picked another name? 😅
