Another year of reading, enjoying and discussing the Man Booker Prize has come to an end with the announcement of this year‘s winner. Not my personal favourite but I can definitely live with it. To me this year‘s longlist was one of the best! I had a great time again!

merelybookish Oh. 😯 I did not like this. But I know lots of people did. 6y
mrozzz I wholeheartedly disagree with this choice. 😣 6y
mrozzz Gonna go read the parameters for how they judge the list. There were a couple from the long list I was shocked didn't even make it to the short list. (edited) 6y

BarbaraBB @mrozzz Yeah I was disappointed with the shortlist as well. But then again, I liked a lot of them - more than any other year. 6y
quietlycuriouskate I'm still waiting for my Overdrive hold to come in. 6y
Ms_T Not a book I‘ve read so I‘d better stack it! 6y
BarbaraBB @Ms_T You will like it. It is highly original! 6y
Redheadrambles Oooh I am so thrilled about this !! Loved this book 6y
Marchpane Loved this one too and can understand its selection. Seems like the judges want to reward originality & uniqueness. Sad that Ali Smith missed out though. 6y
BarbaraBB @Marchpane Yes I think so too. They mostly do. And original it was. Will we now get a discussion of another American winning the prize?! 6y
susanw @Marchpane I just wrote this same thing on someone else Booker post. I thought Autumn was so wonderful, I wish it had won. 6y
enidkeaner I didn‘t love this one but I think it‘s because I listened to it on audio and I don‘t think that was the best choice for me. 6y
Cathythoughts I must read Autumn. But I truely loved the bardo ❤️❤️❤️ 6y

#ManBooker shortlist! I'm surprised at the selection - I would have bet on the brilliant "Ministry of utmost Happiness", and I'm surprised that Swing Time didn't make it.

So far I'm 3/6, and really really trying to avoid the Auster. Fingers crossed for Mohsin Hamid!

CoffeeBooksRepeat Love this is picture! 7y
TheBookStacker I'm definitely cheering for Exit West, I loved that book so much. But out of those I've only read 2 so I can't really decide. 7y
BarbaraBB I also loved Exit West. I feel sorry though that Home Fire didn‘t make the shortlist! 7y

Couldn't resist sharing this view from our balcony in beautiful Playa del Carmen - wish we were still there! The perfect place to catch up on some reading :)

Pickpick

I have mixed feeligs about this one. I enjoyed reading it, and was captivated by the story line. I loved the description of the setting (the forest, the lake, the snow!), and I was invested in tbe characters. However, there were too many strands, too many plots- and at the end I'm not sure how I should feel about at least half of them...

Well deserving of a place on the #ManBooker shortlist, but probably not a winner?

On Wednesday, the shortlist for the Man Booker Prize will be announced. This is my forecast of the books that I expect (and hope) will be shortlisted.

(I know, no Underground Railroad, I am doubting, but I think maybe its momentum has passed)

I'd be interested in anyone else's forecast!

AnneCecilie Have you read the entre long list? 7y
MicheleinPhilly I would bet on Sebastian Barry making the short list. I have not read it but he seems to be a perennial Man Booker favorite. 7y
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie No, I haven't read Paul Auster and Zadie Smith, but these six are so good I dare take the risk 😀! 7y

BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly You might be right, he is always a favourite and Days Without End is really good as well. 7y
Simona I think you are quite near ... only without Exit West 😉 7y
BarbaraBB @Simona Instead of the Hamid, which one will it be 😀? 7y
Redheadrambles I think that is probably a pretty good forecast 😀. Even though as you say it's time maybe past I liked The Underground Railroad a lot more than Exit West. But I also think it's a tough road for an American to win again this year ;) 7y
BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles Do you really think so? Oh you're probably right. I am being naive, politics are everywhere... 7y
vivastory I loved Underground Railroad, but I don't see it winning the Man Booker. 7y
Redheadrambles @BarbaraBB well I would hope they will decide on merit of course ! But it caused a little heated debate widening the field to include non commonwealth countries in the first place, so there maybe some discontent if an American takes it out each year. However, I say let the chips fall where they may. Well shall see soon enough 😀 7y
BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles I remember the debate indeed, but I do hope we are past that. Let's wait and see! 7y
Simona Solar Bones or 4321 😉 7y
BarbaraBB @Simona Don't let it be Solar Bones 😀! The Auster I could live with. I haven't read 4321 yet but generally am a fan of his work. That would just mean a lot to read before October 17! 7y
BarbaraBB @Redheadrambles Well, 3 out of the 6 shortlisted books are American. That is a surprise! 7y

The story is reminder from the our present about dark past, which in some ways repeats itself ... and it's a story about hope, the power of will and what/when the freedom is - freedom. "Cora didn't know what optimistic meant. She asks the other girls ... None of them had heard it before. She decided that it meant trying." And the 'trying' is the essence of this book, at least for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #manbookerreadalong #manbooker #manbooker2017

No, I am definitely not in the mood for this one right now. I'll give it another try when and if I am ready for a one-sentence-stream-of-conscience.
Not a favourite for the Man Booker shortlist in my opinion.

Redwritinghood When I first heard of this book, I knew I'd never even try to read it. It just sounds horrible to me. 7y
BarbaraBB @Redwritinghood To me too, but I read some good reviews by people who often like the same books so I thought I at least had to try... and it's nominated for the Man Booker Prize... but nah... 😉 7y
JenP I loved it. But I really disliked the first 20 pages or so. Once I got used to the style, I ended up loving it. But it took me a few weeks to get past the first 20 pages 7y
See All 7 Comments
BarbaraBB @JenP Hmmm... perhaps I have bailed to quickly then. It really irritated me, but if you loved it, I should maybe give it another go. Let's see if it makes the shortlist! 7y
JenP @BarbaraBB it's a hard book to recommend because I know the style will be off putting to some. 7y
AceOnRoam I'll stay away from reading this one lol. Thanks for the head's up. 7y

Wow. This is one of those books I couldn‘t stop reading and that kept me thinking about it whenever I had to stop. It is a great portrait of current times for British Muslims, as seen from various perspectives. I could symphatize with all main characters which made this novel so special, as they all are so different and with each an own view on today‘s world. This is now my absolute favourite for Man Booker Prize. #manbooker #manbookerreadalong
