#weeklyforecast

There‘ll definitely be more books than this in my week, as I can‘t seem to stop myself from starting new books at the moment and, with the Women‘s Prize for Fiction long list this week, I‘ve got no chance!

I‘ve just started the two on the left, for the NF long list, and both seem really interesting. The Postcard is the one that‘s drawing all of my attention right now I just can‘t put it down. I‘m about halfway through Talking.

LeeRHarry I read one of Laura Cumming‘s previous books - see tagged - and really enjoyed it, so Thunderclap intrigues me as does The Britannias. NB just seen that you have read that one too. 😊 (edited) 9mo
Cathythoughts Can‘t wait to start Postcard ❤️ 9mo
squirrelbrain Yes, I was just about to respond that I enjoyed On Chapel Sands too! @LeeRHarry The Britannias seems to be personal memoir intertwined with women‘s history, which should prove interesting. 9mo
See All 9 Comments
rockpools I‘m looking forward to your thoughts on The Britannias. I really thought I‘d love it, but yeah. I seem to have switched my allegiance to Eve, which is (suprisingly) BRILLIANT. 9mo
squirrelbrain Did you start The Britannias yet? @rockpools I‘m having a real issue with magpieness- all the books are so shiny and sparkly I can‘t stick to just one! 9mo
rockpools @squirrelbrain 😂😂Magpieness is a thing! I‘ve read the first chapter… I‘ll read a couple more… but I don‘t know if I‘ll get through it when there are so many other shinies! (And I want to know more about the prehistoric squirrel-weasel-mice of Eve. Weird. But more important than islands to me right now. Very weird.) 9mo
squirrelbrain Well, you know the squirrel-weasel-mice are far more important to me too! 🤣 @rockpools 9mo
youneverarrived I‘m listening to Thunderclap at the moment - enjoying it so far. 9mo
BarbaraBB Great plans Helen! It‘s going to be an exciting week! Happy you‘re loving The Postcard! 9mo

Arrived back from or camping trip with 4 books on the go, 2 physical and 2 on Kindle. Then realised I was part-way through The Bee Sting before we went away. Oh, and I‘m listening to Thirst for Salt on audio too, so that makes 6! 🤦‍♀️

So these make up my #weeklyforecast for this week, although I‘m also still waiting for the new Osman to arrive. (Waterstone‘s delivery service playing up again; it was only dispatched yesterday)

vlwelser You must be nearly through the Booker longlist. I'm looking forward to your predictions/ranking. 1y

I think there may be a bit of a theme to this week‘s #weeklyforecast… ?

Three of the books are Booker longlisted. I‘m already listening to Bird-Hearts and loving it so far. The Adébáyò and Feeney are both library books with a queue, so will need to go back in a week or so.

I‘m about halfway through Beauty, which is for #titlesandtunes.

I may add a Kindle book too but we‘ll see…and no doubt it will be another Booker!

Cinfhen Can‘t wait to hear your #Booker23 thoughts 🎉 1y
Caroline2 Ohhh I‘m so excited about bird-hearts and Boat. Can‘t wait to hear what you think… They‘re both sitting in my shopping cart!! 😆 1y

#WeeklyForecast

What does one do with more free times…join more buddy reads of course. Started The Lone Ranger and the first story was good. Hope they are connected enough to keep a good flow rather than true short stories. The others I‘ve just started or think I‘ll start but more time has also meant more mood reading.

A combined #bookreport and #weeklyforecast this week.

I loved Carlotta, Still Life was a good read but tough, and I also enjoyed Flight.

The question marks are for #camplitsy23 long listed books, where I don‘t think they‘ll make the shortlist but I can‘t tell you their names until the shortlist is posted in a few days. 😁 🤔

I‘m going to pick one of the two audios for various #bannedbook prompts - any thoughts on which is the best?

MicheleinPhilly The 57 Bus is fantastic but it is a very tough read. Such a heartbreaking story. 2y
Cinfhen I loved Carlotta too! 2y
Bookwormjillk Lol THE SUSPENSE!! 2y

Why I feel the need to read *all* of the Women‘s Prize long list all at once, I don‘t know! 🤣 I actually have a list of which order to read them in, depending on when they‘re due back to various libraries. 🙄

I‘ve nearly finished Strange Sally Diamond on audio (this one for Between the Covers) which I‘m really enjoying.

I‘m driving a lot this week so Dog and Children (which I already started in print) will be my accompaniment on the journeys.

MicheleinPhilly Overachiever! 2y
rockpools How many libraries do you have to raid to get them all? (I‘m doing something wrong! It‘s library end of financial year, so there‘s never any chance of getting most of these til April ☹️) 2y
LeeRHarry I think I‘ll have to read vicariously through you with the women‘s prize - should get to a handful and I have Pod waiting for me to pick up next week at the library 😊 2y
See All 15 Comments
squirrelbrain Always! 😬 Between the Covers starts tomorrow…! Happy Dance! 💃 @MicheleinPhilly 2y
squirrelbrain I got two from the ‘real-life‘ library, some from BorrowBox, one from Libby. I also got a couple on Scribd and one with an Audible credit. Just one that I haven‘t got yet. @rockpools It‘s a full-time job! 2y
squirrelbrain I‘ll let you know @LeeRHarry ! I just picked Pod up from the library too (although need to read The Bandit Queens first as that has another reservation on it). I‘m not really looking forward to Pod - doesn‘t feel like my kind of book. 🤔 2y
MicheleinPhilly Does it??? SQUEEEEE! This will be 2 Mondays in a row that you have made my day so I think it‘s only fair that you continue to find things to turn my Monday frown upside down. Get on that! Please and thank you. 2y
AnneCecilie Looking forward to your thoughts on Children, Dogs and Bandits. 2y
squirrelbrain Well, next Monday is the *second* episode of Between the Covers - there, will that do?! 🤣🤣🤣 @MicheleinPhilly 2y
squirrelbrain That would make a great book title in itself @AnneCecilie - Children , Dogs and Bandits! I‘d read it…! 🤣 2y
TrishB Good plans 👍🏻 2y
AnneCecilie I didn‘t think about that, but absolutely 🤣 2y

Not yet sure what this week looks like in terms of commuting but hopefully I‘ll get to listen to some more Levison.

Just started Weyward last night. The Final Passage is a library book for #readingtheamericas. The other two are next in publication date order on #netgalley. Really looking forward to Pineapple Street as that was recommended by @Oryx ‘s friend in publishing, who also first recommended Lessons in Chemistry! 🤞

jlhammar Oooh, I‘m really looking forward to Still Life With Bones. Just read a starred review in BookPage. Sounds fascinating! 2y

Fellow Littens, I need help with my #weeklyforecast this week!

I just started Wintering on BorrowBox, but then the top 4 all showed up at once (early). The Shards and Exiles weren‘t actually available for 2 months! I need to start The Women Could Fly, and Birnam Wood is an ARC due out early March.

We‘re going on an exotic beach holiday for a few days this week (by which I mean wild, windy Northumberland in the van! 🤣) so which should I read?!

Cathythoughts I love your description of your beach holiday 😁 All those titles work for me on such a trip ❤️ 2y
rockpools Ooh, exotic beach holiday! I actually need to arrange one of them - if you have any recommendations for towns to stay in Northumberland (sadly no van, so we‘ll need to be on the beaten track!) And books.. Jane Harper‘s books are always set somewhere ☀️ dry and hot. Nice contrast? 2y
JenniferP Oooh, a new book from Eleanor Catton - I hadn‘t heard!! 2y
See All 27 Comments
squirrelbrain We stay at a campsite that also has cottage, lodges, hobbit holes etc @rockpools - it‘s called Springhill Farm, just outside Seahouses. Once we park up we don‘t usually move the van (it‘s a bit of a faff) but you can walk to the beach in about 15 minutes, and Seahouses slightly further. You‘d need a car to get there though, I think. It‘s about 6 miles from Alnwick (Barter Books!) which we shall probably visit on the way home. (edited) 2y
IndoorDame Well Wayward and The Women Could Fly have the most appropriate cover art for windy holidays 😁 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain That looks amazing. Pretty sure the friend I‘m going with wouldn‘t be up for hobbit houses, but Alnwick might be the answer… Have fun! 2y
squirrelbrain @rockpools - I think the trains only go to Alnmouth and Berwick. Alnmouth has a lovely beach and some nice cafes etc. Alnwick has Harry Potter‘s castle though. (edited) 2y
rockpools @squirrelbrain I was thrown off the train at Alnmouth once… (don‘t ask!) Will start investigating properly! 2y
squirrelbrain Now I definitely need to know why! @rockpools 😠😬🤣😳 2y
squirrelbrain You‘re so right! @IndoorDame 🤣 2y
AnneCecilie I know this is probably much help, but you should read the ones that appels to you the most now. 2y
LeeRHarry I would pick Weyward, it‘s set in Cumbria so just across the way 😊 2y
squirrelbrain That‘s all of them! @AnneCecilie 🤣 2y
squirrelbrain Hmmm, good idea @LeeRHarry - and you really liked it as well. 🤔 2y
AnneCecilie Then I would start with the one with the longest waitlist/ hardest to renew. 2y
BarbaraBB I am with @JenniferP , looking forward to the new Catton so much! I‘d definitely take that with you! Enjoy your exotic beach trip! I am jealous anyhow 🤍 2y
TrishB Enjoy the beach 😁 They all look good for you (I don‘t do Easton Ellis but it seems to be getting good reviews!) 2y
Lindy Wintering will fit the weather and the seaside location. I found it a reassuring read. I‘ve got Exiles checked out from the library but haven‘t yet started it. I‘m looking forward to Birnham Wood and the one about George Sand, when I get my hands on them. You‘ve got some great choices here! 2y
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @JenniferP - Birnam Wood is definitely coming with me as it‘s digital. I‘ll see if I get to it, and let you know! 2y
BarbaraBB Yes please! 2y
squirrelbrain I‘ve never read Easton Ellis before @TrishB and I‘m not sure if I‘ll like it. At least I can bail if not, as it‘s a library book. 2y
squirrelbrain @Lindy I‘m about halfway through Wintering already, and it‘s really speaking to me. I hadn‘t heard of the George Sand one but it‘s rumoured for the Women‘s Prize and sounds rather intriguing. 2y
Megabooks Have fun! I‘m sure Henry‘s going to enjoy the camping trip too. 💜💜 2y
squirrelbrain I‘m sure he will @megabooks - big empty beaches to run around on! 2y
TrishB I‘ve tried a couple and definitely not for me! 2y
Hooked_on_books I‘m late to the party but am currently reading Exiles and it‘s great! I don‘t want to put it down. 2y
squirrelbrain I‘ve loved all of her other books @Hooked_on_books so I have high hopes for this one! 2y

The top 3 are ongoing. I pulled A Little Life off the shelf on Friday, but only just got round to reading the first few pages just now. 😬 The other two are ‘OK‘ so far.

The bottom 3 are all #netgalley ARCs. The middle one came out this week in the UK so I should read that first, but the other two are due out within the next week or so and both got great reviews in The Times yesterday. 🤔

Cinfhen Ohhhhhh, a new book by Patrick Radden Keefe!!!! I‘m totally jealous 2y
TrishB I have Hungry Ghosts on preorder, I hope it lives up to the hype! 2y

Well, I‘ve had enough of working today (and all weekend 😡) so I‘m going to sit down by the fire, no doubt under a heavy dog, and make a start on one of these lovelies. (Or all of them, knowing me!)

The Wilson is my #bookspin for January, and Queen is right in the middle of the bingo board, and I haven‘t made a dent in #readingtheamericas yet.

I‘m also reading an #arc of The New Life and listening to 2am in Little America.

Cinfhen Sigh, gone was one of my FAVORITE books two years ago❣️❣️❣️I did audio, which was read by author and SO GOOD 😊 2y

I‘ve no idea what to read at the moment, as I‘m in that weird limbo waiting for next year‘s challenges. I picked Adam O‘Riordan‘s The Falling Thread off my shelf but that gets average reviews so back it‘s gone, for now.

I couldn‘t get Minnie‘s memoir on audio, following @Megabooks recommendation, but I‘m sure print will be just as good.

I‘ll continue to dip into Bibliomaniac, which is really fun. I started School last night, and it‘s on the #ToB longlist. I also borrowed Cult Classic from BorrowBox due to ToB. I reserved Haven too and it was available in a few weeks time, but then appeared overnight!

I‘ll hopefully finish the Perry today. My next audio was going to be Olga (ToB again!) but I wonder if it would fit for Puerto Rico for #readingtheamericas23?

squirrelbrain It seems to be set in NYC, although about Puerto Ricans. I think the author is American-born too, so maybe it‘s a bit of a stretch? 2y

I‘m not sure I should be reading The Undertaking though Cindy as, from the hints you‘ve been dropping, I‘m wondering if it might fit a prompt for #booked2023?! 🤣

I‘m also listening to Mary Jane for #pop22.

I‘ve added so many fab books to my physical TBR pile in recent weeks that I decided to make a selection jar (squirrel mug!).

My first pick was the Almanac (@youneverarrived) and I thought that might be a book to dip in and out of so I also picked The Age of Miracles (@oryx). Turns out I can‘t put either book down!

I started the Irving 6 weeks ago when I got the ARC and didn‘t get very far, so I‘m picking it up again now.

I‘ll continue on with How High for #camplitsy and also hope to finish We Own This City this week.

I hadn‘t realised #summerheat weekend was so close (how is it nearly June already?!) so I‘ll start Seven Days for that.

Love Marriage is reviewed on the BBC programme Between the Covers on Wednesday so I started that today. I won‘t finish it for then, even though I‘m reading on Kindle as well as listening, but loving it so far!

Cathythoughts Busy week Helen 😁 enjoy. x 2y

This week I shall mostly be reading black books!

I started Ghost before I went on holiday but didn‘t take it with me. It‘s very unusual and atmospheric; I‘m enjoying it @Cathythoughts

Also about halfway through We Own This City; it‘s fascinating but perhaps not quite as amazing as I hoped.

And then, of course, I need to make a start on How High for #campToB, as I‘ll be Camp Leader in June!

Have a great week everyone!

Suddenly things have got rather busy on the book front! I‘m already reading The Namesake and the Prince Philip book; both are great. Just started The Love Hypothesis on audio this morning, for #pop22.

My library has just changed from Libby to BorrowBox and has pushed both my Abedin and Guncle holds at me this morning; there doesn‘t appear to be a postpone option like on Libby?

The Glass Hotel is a #buddyread starting today.

julesG Oooh, I really really liked The Guncle. 3y
TrishB Have a great week 👍🏻 3y
Cinfhen Fabulous books!!! Enjoy 😊 3y

BarbaraBB I was thinking of using The Love Hypothesis too for #pop22. Let‘s see what you think! Enjoy 3y
squirrelbrain I‘ll let you know @BarbaraBB ! 3y
squirrelbrain I recall your review @julesG and I‘ve been trying to get hold of it ever since. I think I‘d rather have audio, but I can‘t so…. 🤷‍♀️ 3y
Lyssa131330 My library has been using BorrowBox for a while and I haven‘t found an option to push the reserve but on the plus side it normally lets me renew a book even if someone is waiting, which is really handy for those times you only have a few chapters left to finish it off 3y
squirrelbrain That‘s good to know @Lyssa131330 as I borrowed 4 books all at once and not sure if I‘ll get time to read them all! Also a niggle though, Libby used to allow 4 loans AND 4 holds - BorrowBox is a total of 4. 😠 3y

I‘m listening to Rebel on audio, fascinating so far. I‘ve just started Build Your House ( from the #womensprize long list) and Mermaid Singing. (I decided to read this first before our #buddyread @CarolynM to get an idea of the background).

Haven‘t started the Yanagihara yet and thought it looked like a smaller book than her other two but the writing is *tiny*….!

Hope everyone has a good week!

TrishB Will await your reviews 👍🏻 3y

I seem to be going unintentionally monochrome for most of my books this week, other than Will. Absolutely loving this on audio; there‘s so many extras that would be missed in print.

Unorthodox is my last book for this quarter‘s #booked2022.

Salt Lick is on the Women‘s Prize longlist - it‘s a little bit pandemic-y for me at the moment.

Haven‘t started the Towles yet, but really looking forward to it.

brittanybooks Unorthodox is incredible- you‘ll love it! 3y

The Great Mistake and the Lebowitz are the next two that I‘ve picked off my too-large library pile. Started The Great Mistake last night - seems good so far.

I‘ll also continue with Say Nothing, a mix of audio and print.

Tirra Lirra is a #buddyread with @BarbaraBB and I might pick something else to take on our short 2-night camping trip - depends how far I get with these….

Hope everyone has a good week!

TrishB Enjoy Helen ♥️ 3y

I‘ll see how I get on with Lincoln this evening, if I can motivate myself, as I‘m quite enjoying it when I *do* pick it up.

Bees is another #buddyread with @Caroline2 - a joint effort to clear our TBR shelves.

The Lippman is the next random pick off the TBR.

Hopefully I‘ll finally finish The Sentence this week as I need to drive to a couple of meetings so can listen in the car. Our Riches was on Libby, on audio, and sounds interesting.

TrishB Look at that colour coordination 😁 have a good week. 3y
Caroline2 I‘ll be starting Bees tonight. 😃 👍🤞 3y

squirrelbrain Yes, why not @BarbaraBB ? I‘ll be away camping (hopefully) for some of the week, but I‘ll still need a book or two (or six!) won‘t I? 😁 3y
BarbaraBB Spring is in the air, how lovely you go camping! You‘ll need lots of books indeed 😉 3y

Ghosts of Spain has been ongoing for some time, but it‘s really fascinating.

Mermaid is a #buddyread with @Caroline2 and @julesG - haven‘t got any further than yesterday as last night was more of a TV night rather than reading.

Primates is the next one off my TBR shelf (picked by random number)- it gets very mixed reviews so we‘ll see.

Hopefully get some #audiowalking time to listen to The Sentence, but the weather still looks iffy this week.

TrishB Yes still looking very iffy! 3y

Hopefully I‘ll get some more #audiowalking time this week so I can finish The Maid. I‘ll dip into some more of Ghosts too.

Started the Mellors last night…not sure. ?

Also about to start the Bronté one, which I bought from a sale cart at Waterstones a few years ago. There‘s 1 review on Amazon that‘s 5 stars and 3 reviews on Goodreads with an average score of 2.33. ? I‘ve given myself permission to bail soonish if needed!

I‘ve only just started the top two, but both seem great so far.

The bottom 3 are ARCs due to be published this week so I‘m going to try to read at least one. Not sure why I feel the urge to suddenly be up to date with NetGalley when I have books on there published over a year ago…. But there you go! 😁 I‘ve heard good things about Black Cake so may go for that one first.

Hope everyone has a great week!

rockpools Good luck with the ARCs! My % is creeping in the wrong direction- I really need to get up to speed or step away from NetGalley altogether. Have a great week, Helen! 3y

I should finish Crying on audio this week; not sure what I‘ll listen to next though. I do have some Kingsolver short essays on Scribd audio.

And finally, I just fancied Rewind, off my physical TBR shelf.

The other two are #buddyread books, if I can get to them! The #loudbuddyread is with @Cinfhen @TrishB and others, and Unsheltered is with @Caroline2 for #authoramonth. @Soubhiville

Loving both Flight Behaviour (#authoramonth) and Tiddas (#nywd)which is on audio. I think I might finish that this week, as I have about 3 hours to go so I‘ll move on to the Setterfield, which is my other #nywd on audio.

Fault Lines is also for #nywd (I‘m getting through them, @LeeRHarry !😁). The two other books arrived on Libby today and are both short graphic books that will take about 10 minutes each to read. 🤣

Struggling a bit with the Roth. I parked it last week when I was on holiday but it‘s for my course so I‘ll try to plough through it this week.

Just started ‘The Cat..‘ on audio, which won‘t take long as it‘s only 5 hours; then I‘ll move onto the Doerr.(lots of post-holiday ironing to do! 🙄).

The Grohl came up on Libby last week, with no hold so I snagged it. About 40% in - good so far!

Hope your weekend is fab and all is going well Cindy 😘

Amiable I struggled with this Roth, too. I thought his novel “The Plot Against America” was a better and more engrossing read. 3y

A joint #bookreport and #weeklyforecast this week, as I seem to be reading far too many books at once again, so the two things are pretty similar.

Loving all of the 6 ongoing / forecast books, apart from The Fortune Men which I‘m struggling with a little bit.
