Whew, what a great book! I would recommend reading only one chapter a day, otherwise I feel like the stories may blend into each other (I got a bit confused with the names and family connections twice). Bonus, you‘ll spend more time with this wonderful book! I don‘t know why the author had to share the Booker Prize with The Testaments, this one is infinitely better.

Well, the Man Booker Prize was just announced! Breaking the official rules, the judges awarded it to two books, The Testaments and Girl, Woman, Other.

so-soA group of odd people live on houseboats on the tidal Thames in London. Not much happens until the end, when the whole world of each protagonist changes irrevocably. The set-up was good but I had a hard time comprehending what was happening and caring for what was. I think I just wasn‘t in the mood and that it deserves another read and a better appreciation. #ManBookerPrize
pickI‘ve read a lot about WWII but knew nothing of the railway through the Burmese jungle built by Australian POWs. The topics are HUGE- love war death obedience honesty loyalty forgiveness. Flannigan made me see all these in a different light. It‘s a brutal but brilliant read. I loved it in audio, the narrators New Zealand accent was very compelling.

so-soI feel as though this book is a “must-read” simply for its thought-provoking nature. The style of writing itself is extremely difficult to read (for the first time in my life I switched to an audio book which was far more enjoyable!), however whenever I put it down again I had something new to mull over and reflect on. Gorgeous cover 😍 and genius writing, but not an easy read by any means.

And that while it is really good. Told (so convincingly!) from the POV of an unstable but lovely 11-year old boy who considers himself a human lie detector. Because there are many lies in his family, even though his parents are trying to be honest. Painful and beautiful.

It‘s Anna Burns!!
My second favourite of the shortlist, and im not disappointed. It was a wonderful book that I adored reading and im very happy that more people will be reading it now. Very well deserved, even if I did prefer the Overstory personally. Her speech was so sweet and emotional, and I‘m happy to see a woman win it after (I think) six years. Very well done Anna Burns it was an incredible book
