Girl, Woman, Other | Bernardine Evaristo

Whew, what a great book! I would recommend reading only one chapter a day, otherwise I feel like the stories may blend into each other (I got a bit confused with the names and family connections twice). Bonus, you‘ll spend more time with this wonderful book! I don‘t know why the author had to share the Booker Prize with The Testaments, this one is infinitely better.

Well, the Man Booker Prize was just announced! Breaking the official rules, the judges awarded it to two books, The Testaments and Girl, Woman, Other.

Both of these are on my TBR list!
#manbookerprize #manbooker #bookerprize

Reviewsbylola Both fantastic covers! I have Testaments but haven‘t read it yet. 5y
thebluestocking @Reviewsbylola I agree about the covers! 💙 5y
BarbaraBB I wish Evaristo would have been the only winner. The whole buzz created around the Atwood I don‘t think is Booker worthy! 5y

Cinfhen Totally agree @BarbaraBB I‘m a little pissed that Atwood won. Evaristo earned the win!!!!!!! 5y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I saw your 5 stars. I immediately preordered the paperback! 5y
thebluestocking @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen I agree. I think the rules prohibiting a tie are there for a reason, and this circumstance did not seem to necessitate the breaking of them. I am going to have a hard time waiting until GWO comes out in the US! 💙 5y
Cinfhen I didn‘t realize it‘s not available yet in the states @thebluestocking !!! It‘s SO GOOD @BarbaraBB (edited) 5y
thebluestocking @Cinfhen It won‘t come out here until December. 5y

Mehso-so

A group of odd people live on houseboats on the tidal Thames in London. Not much happens until the end, when the whole world of each protagonist changes irrevocably. The set-up was good but I had a hard time comprehending what was happening and caring for what was. I think I just wasn‘t in the mood and that it deserves another read and a better appreciation. #ManBookerPrize

Cathythoughts Interesting review... the blurb sounds promising... but I think I‘ll leave it for another day 👍🏻 6y
Theaelizabet I liked this one, but I read it after reading Hermione Lee‘s excellent bio on Fitzgerald, where you find that Fitzgerald and her struggling family actually lived on such a house boat. The book reminded me of a lot of British New Wave cinema, at least that‘s how the story kept appearing in my head.🙄 6y
BarbaraBB @Theaelizabet That‘s so interesting! I actually thought it must have been autobuographical: so many details! The book reminded me of another Booker nominated book: 6y

Cinfhen Hi!!!! I was searching for books for #indigenousAuthor and I discovered quite a few of Louise Erdrich‘s novels are set in North Dakota if you still need for that State. 6y
Cinfhen Too bad about this book... it sounded promising 6y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Yes I still need North Dakota. I was actually thinking of this one for that prompt: 6y
Cinfhen I‘m honestly looking for the shortest audio 😜😜 6y
Cinfhen Thanks for the suggestion 😘I‘ll see if the audio is available through my lending library 6y

Pickpick

I‘ve read a lot about WWII but knew nothing of the railway through the Burmese jungle built by Australian POWs. The topics are HUGE- love war death obedience honesty loyalty forgiveness. Flannigan made me see all these in a different light. It‘s a brutal but brilliant read. I loved it in audio, the narrators New Zealand accent was very compelling.

2014 #manbookerprize winner 📖🏅

youneverarrived I loved this one too! 6y

I feel as though this book is a “must-read” simply for its thought-provoking nature. The style of writing itself is extremely difficult to read (for the first time in my life I switched to an audio book which was far more enjoyable!), however whenever I put it down again I had something new to mull over and reflect on. Gorgeous cover 😍 and genius writing, but not an easy read by any means.

Pickpick

Shortlisted for the #ManBookerPrize, on the list of #1001books and yet I had never heard about this book before.

And that while it is really good. Told (so convincingly!) from the POV of an unstable but lovely 11-year old boy who considers himself a human lie detector. Because there are many lies in his family, even though his parents are trying to be honest. Painful and beautiful.

BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja I‘d be really interested to know what you would make of this invisible illness. I am definitely no psychologist and couldn‘t figure out if or what is the case with the boy in the book. 6y
Kalalalatja It sounds really good, and I have it stacked already! I really need to borrow/buy this soon, because I‘m getting more and more interested 👍 6y
BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja Don‘t bother, I‘ll send you my copy 🎄 6y

It‘s Anna Burns!!

My second favourite of the shortlist, and im not disappointed. It was a wonderful book that I adored reading and im very happy that more people will be reading it now. Very well deserved, even if I did prefer the Overstory personally. Her speech was so sweet and emotional, and I‘m happy to see a woman win it after (I think) six years. Very well done Anna Burns it was an incredible book

Emilymdxn @BarbaraBB she was so sweet when she won! Made me want to download all her books 6y

BarbaraBB That‘s true. She‘s very likeable! 6y
jhod I read and loved her first or second. Hopefully will get to Milkman this weekend. I'm soppy but I cried at her speech!! 6y
Emilymdxn @jhod it was an amazing speech! It was wonderful to see how much it affected her to win, it clearly meant the world to her and it didn‘t look like she was expecting to win 6y
mklong Oh I was thrilled by this win! Opinion seemed polarized about it, so I didn‘t think she had much of a chance. Off to get my hands on her backlist... 6y
Emilymdxn @mklong I felt like I‘d read a few bad reviews of it and didn‘t feel it was that likely to win either, I was mainly focusing my attention on the Overstory so even tho I knew this was my close second fave I didn‘t pay enough attention to it really. I thought I‘d be disappointed but now she‘s won I might be more happy than if my pick had won. Glad I get to see that gorgeous cover around some more! 6y
