Viper of Milan; A Romance of Lombardy | Marjorie 1888-1952 Bowen
post image
Mehso-so

(1906) Marjorie Bowen's first novel is a sort of Ruritanian romance set very loosely in 14th century Italy. The dukes of Milan and Verona battle for control of Lombardy through diplomacy, treachery, and force of arms. Bowen was sixteen when it was published, and her inexperience shows in a frenetic pace and kitchen-sink plotting; but it also has charming energy, a sharp eye for scenery, and a willingness to flout expectations.

Bailedbailed

I‘m finding this too esoteric. #Roll100 @PuddleJumper

PuddleJumper I didn't know he wrote longer form poems. I enjoy his other works, I'll have to look out for this 13mo
dabbe Sometimes those modernists really wanted to make things difficult for the reader. I love challenging works, but I don't like challenging works just for the sake of showing me how brilliant you are. (not that I know WH is doing this here, but that's usually when I bail on a modernist piece of literature). 13mo
IndoorDame @dabbe it might be me not WH, but the whole time I was reading I kept thinking I just read The vTempest and I still feel like I need the benefit of a college lecture to get this. Not worth it… 13mo
dabbe @IndoorDame Well, that's another thing we have in common (sort of). I tried to read WH and couldn't even get past a few pieces. And my feelings why are the same as yours. And now that I'm (ahem) older, life is short, and I want to enjoy what I read and be challenged but not necessarily oh-good-lord-not-another-plea-to-have-our-book-club-read-Ulysses challenged. That was fun to write. 😊 13mo
IndoorDame @dabbe haha I‘m with you there! Challenged is good. But I have yet to hear anything about Ulysses that makes me even slightly tempted to tackle it 13mo

Hotel Milano | Tim Parks
post image
Pickpick

Hotel Milano is perhaps Tim Parks‘s best novel of recent releases. He has a way of writing stories about interesting, entitled men - particularly men in the later stages of their lives.

Frank is a character you‘re not too sure about at first, but you do warm to him. Frank has a hidden kindness and empathy that takes desperate people in need to bring those qualities out.

I just don‘t know if people are ready for a Covid story right now though.

4 more replacements for the #LeftHanders Display! 😁

This one takes some extra digging, since apparently there‘s quite a bit of false info out there on this subject. 🤷🏼‍♂️ These all seem legitimate though after some scouring.

Have you read any of these?!

Views from Mottarone with views of the Alps, Lago Maggiore, and surrounding areas. Two cable cars and a chair life to get these views. The photos in travel books do not do the area justice.... nor do my photos, but they help me relive the experience. These are snow capped mountains in June! It is the Alps, after all.

Read the book a few months ago to prepare for this trip, my friend‘s wedding. Isola Bella is an amazing island, the castle, gardens, and statuary are just gorgeous. I have taken nearly 1,000 photos in 1 day!
