This is my second Lane Winslow mystery and I am delighting in this series. I do so enjoy a period mystery but where the women get to be strong, capable, independent characters. The incorporation of WW2 and post-WW2 geopolitics raises the bar on these mysteries. Good fun, and love the interior BC setting

kspenmoll This series is wonderful! I loved it-keep in reading ! I have a few left to go…my library had most of this series. (edited) 1w
LiteraryHoarderPenny I love these characters!! Im behind in my reading of them though! 1w

An explosion blasts in Kings Cove near Lane‘s home. She discovers a bombed out cabin with a young wounded Japanese child. After getting the child to the hospital, Lane returns to the site, only to find a dead woman, presumably the child‘s mother.Meanwhile,Darling is investigating the murder of a local jeweler. Are these murders connected? The novel explores lingering post World War II prejudice against Japanese Canadians.#LaneWinslowMystery

Prairiegirl_reading Have you read the other books in the series? I‘m wondering if this needs to be read in order? I‘m a stickler for starting from the beginning but someone suggested this for book club and I want to let it go if it doesn‘t matter that much. 1mo
kspenmoll I have read these in order- my library has them. It helps to read them in order but I think there is enough essential catch up in the book so you can read just one. I am like you, If it‘s a series I like to start in the beginning. Not sure this helps but I think this one you can read as a stand alone. If you like it, go back to the beginning! 1mo

Lane‘s summer mornings speak to me. They are similar, except I do not have a lake, but a river. The river is parallel to my house but their breezes do not reach me.

Deblovestoread Such a lovely description. I can close my eyes and be there. 1mo

Like most of you, I enjoyed Professor Adler‘s story most, and was glad he and Nina had a happy ending. Resi‘s story was sad, and both Bimbo and Lucas were creeps. Krieger made my blood run cold. And Father Jahoda certainly had his finger in every pie.

Vienna after WW2 as three characters return. I found it poignant and fascinating. I loved Adlers story the best ,the writing in his story seemed more beautiful to me.
The narrow streets, the cake shop that Kanakis sees through a broken pane and all the smells
‘The hallway was the same - and the smell - that most evocative, most nostalgic of the senses ..‘
I loved the details of life then. . Resi was an unusual character, I felt sad for her.

Tamra Lovely review, Cathy! 😁 I too was really engrossed in Adler‘s return. 3mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra Yes. I felt I loved him ❤️ 3mo

LeahBergen Great review! I really made me want to visit Vienna one day. 3mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Me too ! We were there once for a few days .. I‘d love to go back. 👍🏻🥰 3mo
andrew61 Great review Cathy. Yes Adler's tale was the heart of this story and the relationship with Nina is a warm ending that contrasts so dramatically with the sad story of Resi and the materialistic acquisition of Kanelskis. Like @LeahBergen it made me want to visit Vienna. I went in the 80s on an interrail so think I'd appreciate it more now. Great review. 3mo
Cathythoughts @andrew61 We were there a few years ago briefly, and I loved it. I prefer it to Paris , and I‘d love to go back as well. The book was very good 👍🏻 3mo
CarolynM Lovely review, Cathy. I‘ve only been to Vienna once, back in the 80s. I‘d love to visit again. We were talking about going later this year, but decided against with all that‘s going on in the world right now😬 Maybe in a year or two…🤞 3mo
Cathythoughts @CarolynM I know it‘s a scary world , we might go somewhere in September.. but I feel safest at home. 3mo

This excellent story centres on 3 people returning to Vienna Post ww2 for a new life. Pr Adler confronts nazi suspicion in his old lab in a brilliant scene. Kanakis is a rich exile who wants to buy property + surround himself in admirers. Resi is a beautiful teenager sent to family. Compelling read.

LeahBergen Great review, Andrew! And I like to see your shelf of Persephones peeping out from the background. 😄 3mo
Cathythoughts Great review… I‘m finding it compelling too. 3mo
andrew61 @Tamra @Itchyfeetreader @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen I'd hesitate to say this wasvon my favourites of our persephone reads, but it is definitely up there. Despite the ending, Adler and Nina left me feeling very satisfied. 3mo

Tamra Have a wonderful trip - sounds perfect, book on a train! 😘 3mo
marleed Barry‘s tea always makes me smile. My sister (RIP) sold Barry‘s tea in her Irish store in Butte, Montana and sung its praises. Same sister reused a single tea bag (of any variety) all day long and I teased her she did not drink tea so much as tea infused water. I brought a large box of Barry‘s home with me. I drink my tea very strong so I loved Barry‘s but I‘m pretty sure she must have reused the same tea bag for a week🤣 3mo
Cathythoughts @Lesliereadsalot sounds great ! Thankyou x 3mo
Cathythoughts @sarahbarnes Thanks Sarah x 3mo
Cathythoughts @Tamra Book on train is my very favorite 🥰📚 3mo
Cathythoughts @marleed I love Barry‘s tea. It has to be Barry‘s , nothing else will do. Reusing the tea bag is a very good idea, I‘m just too lazy 😁 3mo

From the very start, this book told me where it was going. Even so, I was surprised when it got there. I knew nothing about life in post WWII Vienna and found this aspect of it fascinating. I enjoyed Resi‘s story, but she was such an ephemeral character I didn‘t feel a lot for her. I felt much more connected to Professor Adler & his efforts to make a new life in his old home. #PersephoneClub

LeahBergen That was exactly how I felt about the characters, too, and found I was much more interested in Resi‘s family and friends. On a side note, I really love this bookmark and endpapers. 😆 3mo
Cathythoughts Great review Carolyn, I‘m hoping to start tomorrow 👍🏻♥️ 3mo
Tamra I too really enjoyed Adler‘s character. 😊 3mo
