Story was an ode to K-dramas

Rise and popularity of K-dramas

Have you seen any? The only one I've seen that is close is XO, Kitty on Netflix

#riseupreads

Top right is more artwork from the FairyLoot special edition

Melismatic I‘ve watched a few dramas bc they often have idol pop stars from music groups I like in them. Very velveeta cheesey but usually very fun. 18h

peanutnine I've actually never really watched any k dramas 17h
willaful I started one that a friend recommended and I did enjoy it, but I'm really bad about watching things with subtitles. I don't remember what it was called but each episode was a different period in the life of the hero/heroine (started when she was a little girl, IIRC) and they were played by different people each time, which was a little hard to get used to! I think loss of memory was involved. 17h
PuddleJumper Anyone that likes the book would probably enjoy Korean Odyssey, I could see a lot of similarities with reading.

My absolute faves that I rewatch are Semantic Error, university enemies to lovers, and Kingdom, historical political drama with zombies.
17h
PuddleJumper Other supernatural themed romance dramas I would recommend are Tale of the Nine Tailed Fox, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, and Alchemy of Souls.

17h
PuddleJumper @willaful Find Me in Your Memory? Popular drama from 2020 I think 17h
willaful This would have been before 2020. 17h

Did you have this author's note in the version you read?

Loved all the Korean mythological creatures

peanutnine Helpful links, thanks! The author's note was actually included in the audiobook, which I was surprised at as that is not always the case. It is interesting to see what parts were interpreted! I loved all the creatures mentioned but sometimes I wasn't sure how to picture them 17h
PuddleJumper I never read author notes 😅 17h

Overall thoughts? Any favorite parts?

I loved the banter between Seokga and Hani! Definitely looking forward to the sequel!

Above is artwork from the FairyLoot special edition

Melismatic The banter was my favorite part - very k-drama! 18h

peanutnine Oooo gorgeous art! I did love the banter. And I loved the world building! How all the creatures lived among the humans and interacted with the gods was interesting 17h
PuddleJumper I found it very shallow and the main characters intensely irritating. I enjoyed the mythology and wanted more of that and world building and less of the main characters 🤣 17h
AnnCrystal That artwork 🤩🎨🖌️💝. 16h

Read last month for #riseupreads @Catsandbooks
I really liked the lyricism of this story and how the folklore tales were used as metaphors for dealing with mental health struggles. Just a beautiful book!
This was also my #doublespin for April @TheAromaofBooks

Listened to this one for #riseupreads - soft pick
There were parts I really enjoyed (like the world building) and parts that got on my nerves (like Hani's annoying gumiho friend) but overall it was just so slow moving. I needed the pace to pick up a bit. The ending intrigued me though so I will pick up the sequel when it comes out

Wow, this book was something. The teenage experiences of two Black children living with depression, trauma, and being different all told in verse. Through it all fairy tales were woven in. I loved it. #RiseUpReads @Catsandbooks

TheBookHippie One of my top reads last year! 4d
Bookwormjillk @TheBookHippie amazing. I don‘t know what took me so long. 4d

Starting #hyggehour a little early with leftover cake, lemonade, and a heating pad. Might have overdone it just a bit today. Reading last month‘s #RiseUpReads title. Very touching so far.

ElizaMarie Its really good! That cake looks lovely 5d
Catsandbooks Enjoy the book and cake! ❤️ 5d

Mehso-so

Elements if this felt like a solid YA-style mystery. But the more adult elements of the romance felt misguided and a little silly, especially during a shockingly obvious murder investigation with a high body count. I feel like this is the type of drama style that‘d work as cheesy television, not as a book. 😅🤷🏻‍♀️🦊 #RiseUpReads

TheBookHippie Oh yes. Definitely TV. As a book. Eh. 2w
emz711 What is that drink! 😛 2w
Melismatic @emz711 Cold Brew with Lavender Cold Foam 💜 2w
Catsandbooks The author said it's based on K-dramas, which is probably why it feels so over the top 2w
Melismatic @Catsandbooks 100% get that vibe. 2w
