I started this one on audio, switched to print because I was struggling to get into it, and then finished it on audio. I think maybe in the end the struggle was my own, because eventually I found myself not wanting to turn it off. I love Perveen. This isn‘t a true dual timeline book in my opinion, but I love how the author took us back to Perveen in 1916/1917. What happens to her (🤬) during that time plays a huge part in the person/solicitor ⬇️

I went into this book with with high expectations but ended up only caring about one of the storylines, the modern day journey of young Nour who left America, where she was born, for Syria, where her family is from, only to be forced to flee violence and travel as refugee. The story of Rawiya, hundreds of years earlier, did not have the same resonance with me, despite the lovely writing.

I really enjoyed this book, which gave excellent insights into the impact of the #Palestinian diaspora. Each chapter is written from the perspective of a woman in a resilient multi-generational family from the mid-60s to 2016, and showing how repeated wars, persecution, love, and hope for a better life lead them to Kuwait, Lebanon, Jordan, France, and the U.S. without losing family and ethnic ties.

Next up for #booked2021. It has been on my list to read forever and by happy coincidence whilst looking for a book to fill the #setinacountrywhereunpeacekeepersare prompt it was on sale. I want to celebrate India as the biggest contributor of troops since the the UN peacekeeping inception and the first country to deploy an all female contingent to a UN peacekeeping mission in 2007 (which I think the female sleuth in this book would be proud of)

I didn‘t think it was possible to love this sequel even more than the first, but I did! The characters are so starkly real, I physically ache for them. Kudos to Umrigar for creating a fascinating story of unlikely friendships, of resilience, forgiveness and hope. Highly recommended in audio, with Kleenex on the side. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
