To make up for my sluggish reading 😜😂, I am going to post about past reads, & give updated remarks for #overcomingevilempires

Random postings. There will sometimes be one book, sometimes a collection 😉👍🏼📚💝.

Thank You @Chrissyreadit for creating these Book Clubs.

Hawk Song, first book in the Kiesha'ra series.

Been years. I read this series as a teenager/young adult.

Deals with racism from the POV of a diverse world of shapeshifters.

If you read and liked, “Bride“ by Ali Hazelwood, you may like this series. (I will re-review the Bride book in a future post for this group).

The Half King was a huge surprise. It deals heavily with women discrimination.

There are some readers warnings. I almost didn't continue after the opening scene. Please read my previous review if you are a sensitive reader.

I'm glad I did continue, because this was a book with a powerful message.

The Spell Shop is a cozy read. The main focus of the storyline takes us away from the political drama of this world, instead we feel the struggles of the people who have lived under oppression...then see the first impact from a reforming government.

Murtagh was the first book I read from this series. It was incredible...and emotionally difficult.

There are some readers warnings. I had to skip past a few connecting scenes. Please read my previous review if you are a sensitive reader.

Murtagh and his Dragon Thorn survived and escaped an abusive King, who had kept them in compelled service (for years) by magic.

AnnCrystal This story shows their healing journey as they nearly fall victim to another oppressive Queen.

Every time I write Haiku, the similarities to Murtagh-Man's writings makes me smile.

It's a paranormal romance series that follows a friend group in a small town called Mystic Bayou. Well more like chosen family by the end. It is a sweet connection and none of them are the bad boy types. They are a bit spicy though. It's a series of 8 books each following a different couple getting together and bonding with everyone while they all work to help fix the town's troubles. (Continued in comments)

RedxoHearts You could honestly read them alone but I think its much more rewarding to read them all. The story just came together so nicely. Also loved how the author picked other less common beings like a dragon, selkies, a banshee and a werebear. So this review is for all of them and my official rating is 3.5 so round up to 4. My main complaint is that I want more from Mystic Bayou 2mo
Deifio Sounds really good! I read a couple of her other books. Too bad that it's an audible only series. 😢 2mo

Urban fantasy meets supernatural romance in this series that started in 2010. It feels a bit like Twilight for grown ups, repressive gender norms & all. (Actually worse with the gender norms. According to the mc "women's liberation" still hasn't gotten to the werewolves. Yoiks.) Despite that I find myself hooked? It's a compelling story, and I want to see where it goes. Basically a coyote shifter among werewolves and lots of supernatural intrigue.

rachelsbrittain To be clear, the Twilight comparison isn't meant to be negative. It's the regressive gender norms that are the problem, and even Twilight does way better on that front 😅 3mo
SpeculativeFemale I enjoyed the first few books of this series a while back, but then kind of lost track of it. I should really go back to it someday. 3mo
robinb I 💚 Mercy and her crew. Between this series and Briggs‘ Kate Daniels, these are how I got started in urban fantasy. 😊 3mo

5feet.of.fury @robinb Kate Daniels series is Ilona Andrews but I agree I loved it so much! 3mo
iread2much One of my favorite series, it‘s a lot of fun. I‘m rereading them right now 😊 3mo
robinb @5feet.of.fury thanks for the catch there. 😊 I sometimes forget who wrote what. 😂 The heroines remind me of each other. 3mo

Last of my catch-up reviews for this week.

Book 2 in the Mercy Thompson series. It started off a bit slow with some repetitive info from book 1 (I understand this is necessary, but in this case it slowed down the beginning). However once our Mercy got roped into the vampire‘s problem it picked up. We find out more about the vampire seethe and how it works. We also got a bit more about Mercy‘s walker powers & some werewolf politics of course.

MeganAnn As I get back into this series, it‘s interesting to see Mercy‘s relationship with the pack, Adam and the other local creatures starting to develop. Again, I remembered little about the plot but find myself noticing details I know will come into play later. 4.5⭐️ #mercyreread (edited) 6mo

Reading this series in full is one of my 2025 goals. I read this book 15+ years ago & loved it. It was borrowed from a friend at the time so I have not revisited the series since. I‘ve been itching to revisit it & have managed to collect most of the books from secondhand stores.

Since it‘s been so long, I remembered none of the plot so it was almost like reading it for the first time. So good! I love Mercy & am excited to see what she does next.

Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures I‘m currently rereading these books too! I forgot how much I love them 🤩 6mo
MeganAnn @Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures I can‘t believe I‘ve waited so long to reread these! I think I read through book 5 before but that was before I started actively tracking my reads online Goodreads so I‘m not positive. It will be interesting to see where the newer books take Mercy when I get that far. @Schnoebs is doing a reread of this series as well. 6mo

I recently discovered graphic audiobooks in the last year. Now I‘m working through my old favourites (like this one) as well as new finds
What do you think of Graphic Audio “a movie in your mind”??

Butterfinger I like them. As I was reading, I heard the man's voice. LOL. I listened to Fourth Wing and the ACOTAR series. I like how they use the same voice actors for the characters through the series. I'm sure that is tough to do. 7mo
Butterfinger It reminds me of the radio shows. 7mo
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures @Butterfinger I think that‘s why I like them, so far the books I‘ve read are continuing the voice actors throughout the series. I love radio shows and am so glad that audiobooks are making this transition! 7mo

October had some good but not great books & so my #12BooksOf2024 ended up being this 7th book in a paranormal romance series I enjoy.🤷🏻‍♀️ Now November was a great reading month & it will be a struggle to pick a favorite.

Honorable Mentions include: Vampires of El Norte (audiobook), So Hungry

This one was a fun, magical rom-com read. It even has a FMC who is a fire breathing unicorn. 🦄 fun 3.5 🌟 read.
