NPR had a 2022 article and because Children in Evergreen Colorado had to face the horror of a school shooting yesterday i am sharing some books related to ending gun violence.

AmyG “Gun deaths are the cost of Liberty” - Charlie Kirk 1mo
ImperfectCJ I asked my 16yo how he was doing in the wake of yesterday's violence in Utah and Colorado, and he said, "It's just the same old, same old, you know?" It about broke my heart. 1mo
DinoMom @ImperfectCJ what a horrible feeling it is as a parent to hear how today‘s children and youth recognize this as just “same old , same old”. My heart goes out to all the families but also to just all the youth that this has become the state of the world they live in 1mo

An earlier edition of this book sat on my parents' bookshelf for most of my life. I'm finally diving in. 😅

#realhistory #overcomingevilempires #antifabookclub #readingispolitical

dabbe I can't wait to read what you think about it. I've read bit and pieces but never the whole. People at my high school tried to ban it. And this was before the #cheetosatan years. 😵‍💫 1mo
lil1inblue @dabbe I got through Chapter 1 last night. I have a feeling I'm going to be posting about this one a lot. And I am unsurprised, though saddened, that people have tried/are trying to ban it. It challenges our savior narrative. 😏 1mo

I am deeply alarmed by the state of the U.S. Many of you are, too. So, let‘s learn about fascism — a book club, perhaps. But, if nothing else, book suggestions. Let‘s start with WHAT WE KNEW: TERROR, MASS MURDER, AND EVERYDAY LIFE IN NAZI GERMANY.

Amiable Thank you for speaking out! And for the book suggestion—requesting it from the library right now. (edited) 1mo

I've been reading a lot of non-fiction about fascism, nazism and authoritarianism in the last couple of years, but not in English and not necessarily of direct interest to US readers, so I'll probably lurk rather than participate...

Pickpick

I wish this kind of read was available when I was a teenager!

As a book about a girl and her dragon, this book was splendid fun. As a book about an indigenous island girl and her endangered species dragon, this is the kind of book I've been waiting for...as an indigenous reader, this fantasy is a treasure 📚🐉💖.

I prefer books without battles, but some may find this a bit slow paced.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal This was like a journey log from the MC's POV, with plenty of drama mixed into the storyline.

I was trying to keep away from books that capture some of the darkness that is now our crazy, chaotic reality.

If this book would have been available before these dark times, I wouldn't have been as disturbed by the unjust society that Anequs and her dragon Kasaqua must journey through.

👇🏼
2mo
AnnCrystal Reading this now, during these dark times that we're all experiencing, I found this to be an unsettling read.

Unsettling, yet beautiful.

This world was well developed and incredibly detailed. All the characters were crafted with care and respect.

I would have liked more time on the island and learning more about the traditions there. Perhaps in the second book.

The MC Anequs held the resilience and dignity from real life Native Nations.

👇🏼
2mo
AnnCrystal I've read books with lesbian or gay characters. This is the first with a bisexual character (Anequs). I liked how this gave a unique chance with two possible love interests for Anequs...although, I don't believe I cared for the polyamorous. At this point, I'm not sure who I like better for Anequs. I like both Liberty and Theod...but I'd prefer for Anequs to truly fall for one or the other, not both at the same time (that's just me).

AnnCrystal The magic system was just beginning to be truly explored at the end of the book, so I'm hoping the next book shows more.

I am also hoping that we readers get to travel to the unconquered lands, meet the tribal people there, and learn more about the indigenous methods of working with Dragons.

This storyline is incredible.

There are 511 pages divided into 87 unmarked chapters.

I never heard about this book or movie. Sci-fi, and especially Dystopian stories, rarely interest me.

We had an opportunity to watch the movie this week...and I wasn't surprised to learn that the book has faced bans.

Is this what Little t and his administration aspires to transform Our America into?

This movie is both beautiful and horrifying.

👇🏼

AnnCrystal It centers on a world without love, empathy, independence, music, color, faith, hope, nor anything that causes feeling or stirs your senses.

Jonas is chosen to become the next Receiver of Memory. Each day he receive the history of humanity from the Giver in an exclusive library at the very edge of the community.

👇🏼
2mo
AnnCrystal Jonas quickly learns that in order to learn history, he must experience empathy. But Jonas was born to be more than just the next Receiver of Memory, and the Giver has been waiting for him.

👇🏼
2mo
AnnCrystal In my opinion, this story is only an issue for those seeking to oppress democracy.

AnnCrystal @dabbe 🆒👏🏼🤩✊🏼📚💝. This story definitely needs to be taught to students, it is a powerful masterpiece. 2mo
Amiable A world without love, empathy, independence, hope, compassion or history is exactly where we are headed. 😖 2mo
TieDyeDude I highly recommend the book. It has been a constant re-read for me since middle school. The movie was an admirable attempt (Jeff Bridges wanted for years to make it with his dad Lloyd, but it didn't come to pass, and he made it with some concessions during the YA dystopia craze), but the book is on a whole other level, IMO. The graphic novel was also well done. 2mo
AnnCrystal Truth 🫂 @Amiable 😢 oh gosh, that's exactly what my mom and I just talking about. We really need to encourage empathy, teach it in any way we can ✊🏼🦅✌🏼💝. 2mo
AnnCrystal Thank You @TieDyeDude 👏🏼🤩 there's even a graphic novel! Where have I been...thanks, I will be sure to keep a lookout for these book versions.

It would have been a lovely father and son duo film if Jeff Bridges would have been able to convince this film to be made sooner 🎬💫.

This is a treasure...that feels like a terrifying warning 🤔✊🏼🌞📚🎬💫.
