Josey Cirrini is sure of three things: winter is her favorite season, she‘s a sorry excuse for a Southern belle, and sweets are best eaten in the privacy of her closet.
The tale of a young woman whose family secrets—and secret passions—are about to change her life forever.

Such a good story. Love how the magical happenings just naturally blend in.

While this was a decent read, I was expecting a bit more focus on her journey through all the national parks and less relationship woes with her (ex)boyfriend. The descriptions we got of her travels were beautiful & inspiring, but I was hoping for more of them. I understand that it's a memoir though and obviously her trip changed her life in many ways. I admire her courage for traveling the country mostly solo, especially during a global pandemic.

Cinfhen I love travel memoirs too but often get frustrated when they don‘t focus on the places visited - so I totally get your disappointment! 14mo

My favorite almost-pick of the year? Fitzgerald's inventive writing saves this story of a Princeton student 'finding himself' from being boring. But it also seems meandering and uneven - not like Gatsby at all in that respect. For all the strangeness of the lost social norms of the period, it's crazy to me how similar the mc's character is to a contemporary college intellectual dude. @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB Love your drawing 😂 and am intrigued by the premise of the book. 14mo
Cinfhen That is really crazy / goes to show not much has changed when it comes to privileged white kids at Princeton 😉 14mo
Billypar @BarbaraBB Ha - thanks! It's not what I was expecting - sometimes with good results, but other times not. 14mo

Billypar @Cinfhen Yeah, he does have some character progression but it's something like 'aspiring snob with dreams of fame' to 'opinionated intellectual who refuses to get a job on principle'. 14mo
Cinfhen So basically this was autobiographical for Scott 😁😜 14mo
Billypar @Cinfhen He was the same age as the main character when he wrote it, so I wouldn't be shocked 😄 14mo

Oh I loved this 🖤 it took me right into New York. Every single story was good and so interesting to see the similarities between the authors reasons for moving to NY (mostly to be a writer) & their reasons for leaving (mostly because they outgrew it or it became too expensive). As a collection it works absolutely perfectly 👌 #nonfiction2023 (Goodbye Earl) #titlesandtunes #theworldismyoyster

#AugustRush #20in4

Whew! Just finished my #TitlesAndTunes #August pick for #TheWorldIsMyOyster & really enjoyed in—although it certainly made my claustrophobia spike with the author‘s descriptions of the dangerous places she explored as a cave diver. I alternated between the e-book & audiobook & especially enjoyed hearing the author reading her own words. There were a couple of draggy parts but overall this was an interesting & engaging read.👍👍

Cinfhen Fantastic!! I have the audio so glad to hear it‘s a pick 🩵 1y
BarbaraBB Cave diving… I am so fascinated by it because it seems one of the most scary things to do! 1y

The title says it all - a history of women who has been written out of it. And what I found interesting was that they were initially written in, but as time passed, they were at one point omitted. She looks at women from the 7th century until the 15th century which was a little strange for me as a Norwegian since we view the period ca 790 until ca 1066 as the Viking Age. This is a travel around Europe; England, France, Sweden and Poland.

AnneCecilie And to top it all we met a female king. The last half of this was my #DoubleSpin in August @TheAromaofBooks 13th book for #RushAThon @Andrew65 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES And I was thinking about using this for #TheWorldIsMyOyster #TitlesandTunes proving that women can do anything @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen 1y

This was #moremehthanyeah! Mainly focuses on women walkers/writers in the UK (in fact only 2 chapters are based abroad), and hasn't really encouraged me to seek out some of their work. I might look up Anais Nin and Linda Cracknell.

AllDebooks I really like the sound of this but disappointing that it's not global. Maybe she'll do a sequel 1y
jenniferw88 @AllDebooks The problem is that there's LOTS of books about male authors/walkers throughout history, but hardly any on women, because the information just isn't available/there. Misogyny (I think? - brain isn't in gear at the moment!) - at work again 😡 1y
Cinfhen Such a great idea for #TitlesAndTunes too bad it wasn‘t a winner 😕 1y

Cortg I love walking, hiking & backpacking. I may pick this one up out of curiosity. 😊 1y
BarbaraBB Anais Nin is an interesting person but I am not sure what‘s she‘s got to do with walking? I thought she was always in the salons in Paris 😂 1y
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB she does a lot of walking, either alone or with a lover, in Paris (& to a lesser extent, New York) to help her with the writing. 1y
BarbaraBB Ah she walks in Paris, that makes sense. I thought in England! 1y

Late with this one. I got a little stumped thinking of a book for #TheWorldIsMyOyster. I went with a Sarah Addison Allen book since she likes to write about characters suddenly getting a world of possibilities and new beginnings.
For Tunes, I went with Take The World by She Wants Revenge.

julieclair I loved this book! 1y

I was really looking forward to this one for #titlesandtunes #theworldismyoyster and it didn‘t *quite* live up to expectations.

Still a good pick, but not going to trouble my favourites books of the year. It just felt a bit dry in places to me and some of the museum lingo wasn‘t explained properly so I didn‘t ever get fully engrossed or feel like I was actually there, visiting The Met.

TrishB I got this on 99p offer so I have low expectations 😁 1y
kspenmoll Oh no, i have this & did have high expectations! 1y
squirrelbrain @TrishB @kspenmoll - it‘s still good, but not a ‘wow‘… for me anyway. It got such amazing reviews in the press that perhaps I expected too much. 1y
Cinfhen Sorry it didn‘t wow you! 1y
BarbaraBB Sorry this wasn‘t as good as we hoped! 1y

Sometimes all you need is someone like Uncle Carlo to hold your hand via these crônicas & reintroduce you to the wonder & strangeness of the world. These are short, brief pieces that reflect his belief in the marriage of science & arts, on the wholeness of disciplines in order to marvel at the complexity of life. I read a couple every morning to start my day & it was the perfect fit for #TheWorldIsMyOyster for #TitlesAndTunes @BarbaraBB @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Lovely 😊 1y
