Mehso-so

Was the mystery satisfying? Yes! Was the banter delicious? Absolutely! Was the racism freaking heinous? 💯 I'd love to continue with this series and I get that it is a product of its time (70s era writer with Victorians cavorting through Egypt) but I just can't stomach it.

Most of my #ForTheLoveofBooks reading seems to be finishing books I was already reading 😂 Still, it was good to finish these. I've started The Midnight Witness, but I'm not sure if I'll get it finished today or not as I'm getting ready to leave for work, followed by potential family shenanigans (my family isn't always good at deciding ahead of time 😆) @TheSpineView

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 This was another one of Amelia Peabody‘s fun archaeological adventures in Egypt which, of course, turned into a murder mystery. Amelia also is again hot on the trail of the Master Criminal. The last couple of chapters didn‘t verge on the edge of the ridiculous, the author took a cheerful leap in with both feet. I teetered back and forth between laughter and embarrassment at the silliness of it all.

Like Emerson, I was a bit tired of hearing about the MASTER CRIMINAL but honestly these books are just such good fun that even the MC drama stayed pretty entertaining, even if the ending feels rather ridiculous. Ramses is still spoiled, but incrementally less obnoxious in this one. Overall I'm enjoying my reread of this series, but looking forward to the later books where Ramses is older and more a part of the team.

Ruthiella Agree that there are some bits that wear less well earlier in the series. But I think the underlying solidity of the Emersons as a family unit carries the reader through that (she writes 11 books in 😂!). 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - Definitely so - one of the things I love most is the close familiar bond between them all. I read the whole series about ten years ago, so it's been fun to revisit them all, knowing that they get better as they go 😂 2mo

bookandbedandtea I also agree that I love the bond the Emersons have and that the series gets better once Ramses is old enough to have his own storylines. 2mo

An antiquities dealer visits Emerson requesting compensation for a forged scarab allegedly sold by David from his grandfather's collection, which never existed. Discreet enquiries reveal that the impersonator has sold fake antiquities to other dealers. Who is trying to vilify David and why?

I haven't read any of the Amelia Peabody books for a couple of years and I'd forgotten how funny Amelia's narrative “voice“ is.

CarolynM So witty! As are all Elizabeth Peters books. 2mo

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 Book 3 of this delightful historical mystery series is extremely entertaining. Amelia is as strong-willed and independent as ever. Emerson is irascible and soft-hearted, as curious as Amelia, and dotes on his son. Ramses is finally old enough to accompany them to Egypt on his first dig and is extremely precocious. “The Cat Bastet,” as she is called, plays a vital role in solving the mystery.

No. 12 in the series-only eight more books to go and I will have completed it. This one was particularly good. I know many readers become invested in the relationship between Ramses and Nefret, but for me, more touching was the development of Amelia‘s relationship with her son. WWI has started and the Emersons are involved, naturally. My only complaint is that evil Percy does not suffer enough. I‘d have liked to see him in prison. #serieslove24

merelybookish Nice to hear the series is worth continuing on with. I read first one for #cloakanddaggerchristmas and enjoyed it! 2mo
Ruthiella @merelybookish It‘s a fun series and like many, it gets better as is progresses. 😃 2mo

While I am always delighted to visited Amelia and Emerson, this isn't my favorite of the series. Their son Ramses is, frankly, obnoxious. The mystery is a little shaky. And every ten pages we have to listen to Emerson expounding on why he's more intelligent than anyone who has ever believed in any religion. But outside of those annoyances, there is still so much to enjoy. The setting, the non-Ramses characters (in fairness, Ramses matures and ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) becomes one of my favorite characters later in the series), and Amelia's sparkling narration are all just so fun. A softer pick than some of the others in the series, but a pick nonetheless.

CarolynM I‘ve always thought you need to have known Ramses as a child to fully appreciate him as an adult😆 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @CarolynM - This is the one where she gives him that speech impediment... I literally never have issues LISTENING to someone who has a lisp, stutter, or other issue with speaking out loud, but there is something about READING it that just really gets annoying 😂 I think she's trying to remind readers that he's only five or whatever, but either way I can't deal with how they just let him do whatever he wants/think he's clever for finding loopholes. 3mo

TheAromaofBooks @CarolynM - But I do genuinely enjoy seeing the way his love for Egypt and its history is from a very early age onward 😂 And you can see where he gets his penchant for adventure and sneaking about!!! 3mo

Ruthiella I feel that Ramses has as a child displays the worst characteristics of his parents! 😂 But he does become more tolerable as he gets older and it occasionally allowed to finish a sentence. 3mo
