#LittensDressedInBlood #Day17 #BlackMagicWoman Anita Blake was one of the first adult magical realism series I read. Not only is Anita a Vampire Hunter, at night she uses what a lot of people consider black magic to raise zombies, an ability she was born with. A good series until it turned into soft porn!

I can't believe I waited so long to read these books. I loved this book. This prequel tells of how Maria Owens came to Salem and started the curse that's messed with her family for generations 🧡

Kimberlone Currently reading this. Enchanted! 3y
StaceGhost I‘ve never read these either but I watch Practical Magic at least once a month 3y
samantharoberts I loved Practical Magic and Rules of Magic. I need to read this one this fall! 3y
MidnightBookGirl I love this series too! I read Practical Magic for the first time in the early 90s, but I remember not loving it. However, I wanted to read Rules of Magic, so I re-read Practical Magic and older me loved it. I still have this one on my TBR though. 3y

Vasilisa Petrovich is accused of being a #blackmagicwoman and then just kind of embraces the idea and becomes a kickass heroine who makes her own rules. She's got a pretty sweet magic horse sidekick too. 🐎

I'm sure I'm inadvertently copying someone here, but I couldn't think of a more delightfully horrible #BlackMagicWoman than Bellatrix LeStrange

Cinfhen If only I understood the HP references....but it visually looks good😊 6y
julesG @Cinfhen Maybe you should try the HP series. 6y
Robothugs She‘s one of my fave actresses! I started reading HP with my niece but it‘s slow going. She‘s 6 and we are in it together! 🙌🏻 6y

#BlackMagicWoman focuses on the 'tragic mulatto' stereotype that is conventionally portrayed as a character tormented by issues of racial and cultural ambiguity. It explores the journey of the 'mulatto' from 'tragic' to 'empowered' through the character's adherence to Yoruba-Atlantic religions. From this religious transformation, the 'tragic mulatto' becomes the Black Magic Woman, a signifier of a New World cultural identity.

Old Black Witch is a 17th century woman who has her eyes and mouth sewn closed and haunts a Dutch town by going in and out of houses at random.

I‘ve got this on my TBR to read this month. We‘ll see if I get to it, otherwise it will go back on my shelves until next October. 🤦🏼‍♀️

erank58 This was unique and well written! 6y
Cinfhen It‘s meant to be good but I hear ya... after Oct 31 most horror goes back on the shelf until next October 🖤 6y

Reviewsbylola When are you planning on reading it? @Robothugs and @Mindea? Maybe I‘ll try and read it then too! 6y
Reviewsbylola It‘s funny how I‘m all about spooky reads until Halloween passes. Then I‘m over it! @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB 6y
Robothugs @Reviewsbylola Pretty sure we are both up for reading it now 🤔 6y
Reviewsbylola Ok, I‘ll start it after my current read. @Robothugs 6y

emilyhaldi I remember this being on your list last year 😆😉 6y
bio_chem06 I was mixed about it. I liked it but I didn't love it. I don't know of I would recommend it... 6y
britt_brooke This sounds fucking terrifying. 🙈 6y
Gissy I have various spooky books too! This is one is imp tbr too. A guess I have to read one or two per month. If not I need to live for ever, many Octobers, to have the time to read all my books☺️ 6y
Reviewsbylola I only just started it, but it‘s pretty crazy. This family is just eating dinner with this witch standing feet away from them. She shows up randomly at the local houses and they‘ve just learned to ignore her. This particular family did choose to cover her face with a dish towel though. 😂 @britt_brooke 5y

As a native of the Caribbean, Jean Rhys was shocked by Brontë's portrayal in Jane Eyre of Bertha Mason, Rochester‘s Creole wife, who was locked up in the attic. In this book Rhys tells the story of Brontë's #blackmagicwoman and gives Bertha her own voice. #OctoberXFiles

Salem Possessed | Paul Boyer, Stephen Nissenbaum

Tituba, arguably a #BlackMagicWoman , is one of those accused of beginning the Salem Witch Trials. This book looks at other possible factors for the mass hysteria. No one will ever figure out the true reasoning why Salem went to such an extreme to exorcise witches from its landscape, but Boyer and Nissenbaum present some leading theories. #OctoberXFiles

Crazeedi Interesting. I just read a book referring to that time, such a horrific hysteria over wise women . So sad that religion played a role in this tragedy. I think evil can insinuate itself into live in any age, that's why we need to always question and be on guard 6y
Crazeedi Of course men were killed in that hysteria too. 6y
Cinfhen Fascinating time, I agree @Crazeedi 6y

Librarybelle @Crazeedi @Cinfhen Definitely a horrific time in American history. Other witch trials and hysteria happened throughout the world, but this was different. So tragic! 6y
Mdargusch This looks very interesting. I‘m taking this book because I really know very little about this time period. 6y
ferskner One of my favorites! 5y
