The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael continues as my bedtime reading. This is another favorite in that series.
I love the deep dive into theology and heresy.

random_michelle ‘There is no sin unless through a man‘s own will, and hence the reward when we do right things also of our own will.‘ Let Elave commit that to memory, and he could quote it in his own defence. More than likely Anselm would take him at his word, and feed the suspect all manner of quotations supportive to his cause. It was a game any well-read student of the early fathers could play, and Anselm better than most. 3h

In this Brother Cadfael mystery, a priest is discovered murdered on Christmas morning. I especially liked the historical context, which showed the strife among people supporting different political factions in 12th-century England.

PuddleJumper I loved the TV series. Never got into the books but we have the editions from the 70s with the teeny tiny writing 🤣 2w
TheAromaofBooks I LOVE this series. Highly recommend reading them in order if you haven't read them before, as the characters really develop over time. And the ending of the series is just perfect! 2w
kwmg40 @PuddleJumper I loved the TV series too. Fortunately, my library had this book on audio. I don't do well with teeny tiny print these days myself. 1w
kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks I've read a few of the books and watched the TV series. Your suggestion sounds like a good one. I really should read the entire series from the beginning. I jumped to this one because I wanted a Christmas-themed mystery. 1w

My bedtime reading is still Ellis Peter's The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael, which is so very comforting: historical mysteries but there is always a romance (not involving Cadfael, the monk).

Cadfael as a character is one of my all-time favorites, as he remains kind and generous despite his years at war.

The view from my current favourite reading spot. You can‘t see it, but the seat is a big swing inside the hedge. Nice and shady in the afternoons☀️📖💜

A short book that contains the three prequel shorts to the Brother Cadfael series. They all take place in the 1100‘s pre-A Morbid Taste For Bones and tell of Cadfael as he came to and settled into life at Shrewsberry Abbey. Cadfael is a soldier-turned-herbalist who uses his knowledge and observational skills to solve mysteries.

The language takes some getting used to but I‘m excited to move from here into the long series of full-length novels.

Libby1 I love these books. 11mo
