Set during the lead up to the summer vacation of 1937 and the end of the summer of 1938. Meet the Cazalets: the Brig and the Dutch, their children and their children‘s souses and grandchildren. The entire family spends the summer together

You really notice what a year does in society, in the conversation and in the grandchildren

The day began at five to seven when the alarm clock (given to Phyllis by her mother when she started service) went off and on and on and on until she quenched it.

Sad to say goodbye to the cazalets after this final 5th volume which ended on a magnificent finale as Elizabeth Jane Howard describes, in one of the best depictions I've read of a family Christmas, the last gathering at Home Place. Births, deaths, and marriages, this has been a wonderful reading experience, and we are left in 1958 wondering what happened to those gloriously drawn characters, particularly the new generation of children.

Tamra I keep meaning to start this series! 3mo
andrew61 @Tamra I'd definitely recommend it. It was a bit daunting at first thinking it stretched to 5 volumes but once you get to know the characters it is very readable. That being said I read book 1 in 2020 so it has still taken a while. 3mo

“The fifth and final volume”. And with that, this epic series has finished. I‘ve adored each of these books and the sprawling, privileged, sad, funny and messy family they introduced me to. I‘m so sad it‘s ended. I‘ve been saving this last one up all year, then when I finally started it I read it too fast in big greedy gulps. Very tempted to go right back to the beginning and start again.

LeeRHarry I really enjoyed this series too. 😊 4mo
andrew61 Great series I plan to read this one next year and will be sad to leave the family behind. 4mo
TrishB I‘m going to give this series another go as I just couldn‘t get into the first one. But so many seem to love it. 4mo

JillR @trishb please do try again, I‘ve loved them so much! There‘s lots of characters to keep track of, but a handy recap and list at the start of each book. I feel a bit bereft now I‘ve finished… 4mo
JillR @andrew61 I really didn‘t want it to end. Unusually for me, I‘m thinking how great it would be if a younger writer took up the mantle and continued the series, would love to see them beyond 1958! 4mo

The cazalet series is such a joy to read, and the 4th book covers 1946 to 1947 as the family experiences dramatic life events at the same time as England and the world changes. The brs Hugh Edward + Rupert emerge from the war amid personal turmoil, but its Louise, Polly, +Clary whose stories pull the reader apart emotionally. Other characters' stories include Christopher but most noticeably Archie. It will be sad to leave the characters in bk5

MaureenMc I love this series. ❤️ 7mo

Was feeling low, went to the library, found this while browsing, read twenty pages and instantly felt better.

Part one was one of my favourite books last year. Lovely to be back with the Cazalets. 🩵

I have finally begun my journey with the Cazalet family! Not at all surprised to report that once I was able to get a hold of the sprawling cast of characters, I was All About it. Really going to try to pace myself with this series, and make it last in 😏

JenniferP I loved this series so much! Enjoy!

Confusion (Original) | Elizabeth Jane Howard

Third in the marvellous Cazalet series runs from 1943 to the end of the war ,focusing primarily on the 3 cousins Louise, Polly + Clary as they move from teenagers into young women and have to manage strange marriages (louise), love + the impact on war. The stories also are intercut with the wider family. This is a great set of books weaving brilliant storytelling with a unique picture of family life. The other 2 bks I found on a charity table.

LeahBergen I really enjoyed The Sea Change. 13mo
Ruthiella I‘ve got the whole set on kindle. I‘ve only read the first volume, so far. But definitely good stuff! 13mo
