I went to my local indie bookstore A Great Notion in Auburn, MA because they were having a big used book sale - 5 for $3 mass market paperback and buy 3 get 2 free all other used & I went to the thrift to look at baby clothes & found the tagged book for $3.

This was odd, but fun! And also deeply sad at parts. Fast read, done in a day. Wish we could have gotten into Constance‘s head a bit more! (4)

This one's not amazing or anything, but it is fun. It says some things about organized religion and about family dynamics and how hard it is to move away from them. There's also some in there about coming into our own as adults. But mostly it's just fun.

ImperfectCJ I wrote several papers on Satanism and cults when I was in junior high and high school (at the tail end of the 1980s Satanic Panic), so this is kind of a fun take on some of those themes. 1mo
Reggie The part that made me laugh so hard at the outrageousness of it was when she went back and was having dinner and they concluded the prayer with Hail Satan instead of amen. I was like, Oh we‘re just out with it from the getgo. Lolol 1mo
ImperfectCJ @Reggie It's definitely not subtle! 1mo

Such a creepy/atmospheric read, just how Joe managed to create such a palpable, mesmerising read in a novella is a true credit to his writing skills. I devoured this in one sitting as I couldnt put it down, I just had to see where it would end and it did not disappoint as some novellas can when they seem to end abruptly once they have reached a certain word count. Such a well woven story for a compact read. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I just love Rachel Harrison‘s bitingly comic blend of social commentary and feminist horror. This one‘s special though, because it‘s for the religious trauma girlies like me—and a potent reminder that, as dark and isolating as it can be, it‘s better to be a black sheep than a sacrificial lamb. 🤘

My October stats. The holidays are coming which means Christmas reads so I'm expecting vastly different numbers in a month lol.
My average time to finish is skewed because it took me so long to finish the newest Robert Galbraith novel, a #chunkster at over 900 pages. #chunksterchallenge2024

Gothic, campy, strange, and yes, fun. Great, fast read for October.

Vesper has never felt like she fit in and returns to her strange family home to seek some answers. Then things get creepy… and creepier…

I didn‘t get to this short story (part of the Creature Feature collection on Amazon) last year, so I listened to it today as a warm up to #HauntedShelf. Creepy for sure!

My October's extra scary #bookspin list.

I have everything here from sort of cozy mysteries to creature features to haunted houses, to teen slashers. I'm excited for October reading.

Spooky season is here (and it will last until at least Spring).
