“It was so hard to explain. How much of their adulthood was about mourning the life they‘d lost, secure, comfortable, serene. A life they were born into by chance, luck. But had it felt secure or comfortable or serene? Their parents, with their gin and tonics, and their private miseries … It was really in one another that the sisters found their anchor, their buoy.” (p.347)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In-depth story of Milliken vs. Bradley, the Supreme Court ruling that overturned a local decision to include suburbs in efforts to desegregate Detroit schools. I live and work in the region, which is one of the most racially and socioeconomically segregated in the country, and can see its legacy every day. I really appreciated the deep dive into the case and the people involved. Dense, but a great read!

“…good swearing is used as a form of punctuation, not necessarily a response to pain or insult, and is utilized by experts to lend a sentence a certain zest, like a sprinkling of paprika.”

Plimpton, founder of The Paris Review, wrote about sports by immersing himself in them. He actually trained and played with the Detroit Lions.

Three striving sisters in Grosse Pointe get involved in a pyramid scheme, and we see each of their efforts to stay afloat or get ahead (though really the book focuses on 2 of them). And then there‘s a pesky murder to contend with as well. This book had a lot to say about capitalism and greed. It was good, but not my favorite of Abbott‘s.

Money is at the heart of this tense drama about a pyramid scheme in the guise of a women's empowerment group. The Bishop sisters grew up wealthy until their father lost his job: now in their 40s, they are struggling: Debra, under the weight of her husband's medical bills; Pam, in battle with her duplicitous ex; and Harper, still reeling from a break up that left her with a debt she cannot pay. The Wheel promises prosperity, but at what cost?

In between a pick and a so-so.. it‘s well thought out, and twisty, but it‘s a slow burn and jumps around a lot.

I‘m going to complain about this book, but I actually liked it. It just seemed to take forever to read; I made it to about page 230 & thought I‘d never finish.
This has been on my tbr for yrs. A family saga full of inbreeding that results in the narrator being intersex. The family has interesting characters. It‘s a story of immigrants, imperfect people, & identity. 3.5/5 ⭐️ Good book for Pride month

I had been intending to read this for so long and it didn‘t disappoint. Eugenides‘ family saga of Greek immigrants pursuing the American dream and of the transition of his central character was enthralling. There was a lot of humour but also authentic emotion and provoking ideas about gender/sex and nature/nurture.
I do wonder how adopting the voice of an intersex character would be viewed in our current environment.
