Day 6
I want to read this book so badly! Picked this up the last time I visited family in Italy. Unfortunately my Italian is far from great (I understand speech better than writing) so it‘s been a struggle attempting this. From what I gathered in the synopsis it‘s a detective murder mystery at a mental asylum. I will continue to attempt this even if I need google translate close by.

Has anyone read #FluentForever?👆🏼It was a #kindledeal today, so I bought it. I am using my upcoming trip to Europe as an excuse to learn another language. I have been using #duplingo to learn French, and if there is time I may try to learn some Italian too. I do not expect to become fluent by mid-June, but it‘s exciting to learn a little bit.

LaLecture I own this one but I still haven‘t read it completely as I wanted to read it step by step while learning a language (he has kind of a 4-step-program). I really like his approach. French is such a beautiful language! And the grammar ist really similar to Italian. It‘s really confusing though to learn both languages at the same time as the similarities can also confuse ^^. Have fun in Europe! Which countries will you visit? 6y
LoveToReadLiveToRead Oh I haven‘t used Duolingo for ages but this is the second time I‘ve seen reference to it this week so maybe I should pick it back up. I did French at school until I was 18 but then have only dipped in and out of it since then so started Duolingo a while ago to refresh my memory. PS your trip sounds great! X (edited) 6y
Reggie I did French for a week on duolingo and all I remember is il mange un orange. Lol 6y
ReadingsByTheC Your trip sounds amazing! I've had my eye on that book, thanks for the heads up on the kindle deal. 6y

I laughed out loud all the way through this book in English so it seemed like a good choice for an audio-French-refresher. I've ordered the paperback in French so I can read along the next time through! 🤓 I'll tag the English title in the comments. #French #Sweden #ReadingAroundTheWorld #ForeignLanguage #Aging

DrexEdit Jonas Jonasson is on my #TBR challenge list. I hope to get to this soon! 😊 7y
Melissa_J Wow, the French version of the title is quite different from the English version, isn't it? 7y

Louise @DrexEdit I've read all his books so far and enjoyed each one! 👍 7y
Louise @Melissa_J Yes! They didn't even bother to have him climb out the window and disappear! It was enough to make him a party-pooper! 😂 7y
Leniverse @Melissa_J @Louise The English title matches the Swedish original, (except for making gender explicit and having a chunky phrase for someone who is a hundred.) I wonder why the French changed it. 7y
Melissa_J @Leniverse @Louise it is strange that they'd change it so significantly. Have you read Harry Potter in French? Hogwarts becomes Poudlard! 7y
TorieStorieS I'm listening to the English audio version right now! 7y
Louise @Melissa_J @Leniverse Titles are a funny thing. I'm amazed sometimes at how film titles end up completely different in translation. @Melissa_J, I have the first 3 HP books in French but haven't read them yet. How funny that Hogwarts has a completely different name! Do you think they were going for a name that evokes the same gut response? 7y
Louise @TorieStorieS What a coincidence! Did you know there's also a movie version? Elephant and all! 😃 7y
Aleida That's a brilliant idea for when you other language isn't strong, but you can follow the story being told bc you have written one to read simultaneously. 💛 7y
TorieStorieS @Louise I didn't know!! I'll have to check that out after I finish listening! Thanks!!! 7y
Louise @Aleida Exactly! It's wonderful how easy it is these days to get books and audiobooks in multiple languages! 7y
Louise @TorieStorieS They did a nice job with the movie, though of course, it's impossible to capture ALL the subtle and not-so-subtle humor of the narrative. It's good that you are listening to the text first! Enjoy! 7y
nadine_swartz Great strategy- I'll have to recommend that to my French students! 7y
Louise @nadine_swartz Great! I hope it helps them! 👌 7y
catsuit_mango There is a strange trend in France to translate titles either completely differently or change the title to something else in English : lately the movie 'where is Monday?' became 'Seven sisters' not 'sept soeurs'... 7y
Louise @catsuit_mango How interesting! Do you live in France? 7y
Leniverse @Melissa_J The Norwegian translator did the same. Hogwarts is Galtvort, a direct translation of hog+wart. Some of the names were changed too. Dumbledore is Humlesnurr. Very well done by the translator. But also confusing. I read them all in English, and get confused when my younger siblings use the Norwegian names. 😂 7y
Leniverse @catsuit_mango In Norway there used to be the same trend for movie titles. They'd get easier to understand English titles, or weird translations. After the National Lampoon movies were called variations on "Hjelp! Vi reiser på ferie" (Help! We go on holiday), ALL comedies were called "Help! Something or other." For years! ? 7y
Louise @Leniverse Thanks so much for sharing that! So interesting! On another note, I remember when I was in Germany for a few years, it seemed the same few people did the German voice-overs of American films. It was strange to hear the same voice doing, say, Julia Roberts and Kathy Bates! 7y
catsuit_mango @Louise yes, and i''m French ;) 7y
catsuit_mango @Leniverse when I was living in Germany I had to know the title of movies in French English and German depending on who I was talking too... That's when I discovered that trend 7y
Louise @catsuit_mango Ah, you're French! Once my French improves, I'll know who to ask for book recommendations by contemporary French authors! 🤓 7y
Louise @Leniverse Are you in Norway? 7y
catsuit_mango @Louise whenever you want I'm always happy to talk about books ;) 7y
Louise @catsuit_mango Brilliant! Thanks! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 7y
Leniverse @Louise No. I'm from Norway but I'm in Wales. 7y
Louise @Leniverse Ah, Wales is beautiful! How does a gal from Norway settle in Wales? I'll bet there's a good story to that! (edited) 7y
Leniverse I met an Englishman in Amsterdam while I was living in Paris... (long story 😂) Short story: He came to Norway with me, and after a decade we suddenly found ourselves without fixed income. (Not fun. Especially with kids.) We thought we'd give the kids a chance to get to know their British family better. But he got a good job offer in Wales, and the family are all east of London, so that didn't quite work out. 🙄 But here we are. 7y
Louise Great story, @Leniverse! I'll bet the long version is fascinating! How lucky for your children to be raised bilingual! 7y
Leniverse Our youngest is hardly speaking Norwegian anymore. 🙁 I'm working on that. Our oldest is solidly bilingual and also top of her class in Welsh. 😂 (It's an English medium school, but they have to learn some Welsh.) 7y
Louise @Leniverse Top of her class in Welsh! That's amazing! (I have a Welsh aunt so I know what a challenge that language can be.) Yes, speak Norwegian with your youngest! My German father didn't emphasize German in our household, so though I grew up with an ear for it and for pronunciation, I had to go to language school in Germany after college to master it. 7y
Leniverse I think we emphasised English a bit too much when we moved here, as he was starting school and barely spoke English (although he understood it). Now the situation is reversed. He still understands Norwegian, but replies in English. I have both kids attending a Norwegian online school for expats, so hopefully the situation will balance out. 7y
Louise @Leniverse That sounds like a very good plan! 👌👍🍀 7y
