Pickpick

This book was absolutely packed with information about L Frank Baum and the extraordinary time period in which he lived. He also seemed to have been present for, or just on the heels of, most of the major events I knew about during this time. He was at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, for example. Loncraine did a phenomenal job pointing out possible influences and making connections between Baum's real and fictional worlds.

"Baum's ability to create vivid, odd characters and varied, weird kingdoms wasn't matched by an ability to build well-structured and satisfying plots." Isn't *that* the truth? ? #beyondtheyellowbrickroad

My book club‘s selection for this month made me want to reread Oz and rewatch the movie! The author was inspired to write it by this photo of Maud Baum & Judy Garland. Not great literature, but a fun read.

Mehso-so

I liked that this had more of a storyline and less randomness than previous Oz books. Betsy Bobbin and the Shaggy Man are delightful. However, I was constantly frustrated that the horrible Love Magnet works differently than it did in the past (presumably so it can be defended against), and the nomes‘ personality changes didn‘t stick, other than the king inexplicably getting a new name.

BookmarkTavern Yeah the Love Magnet making a reappearance really frustrated me. 4mo

When Betsy & Hank the mule fall overboard in a storm, they have no idea they‘ll join up w/ the Shaggy Man rescuing his brother, a lost daughter of the Rainbow, & a small army intent on conquering Oz.

I had forgotten a lot of this 1! The army of Oogaboo is just ridiculous, Polychrome & Betsy are a joy, we get to meet a dragon, & the Nome king makes a dastardly reappearance. So does the Love Magnet, & I really wish they would lose that. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

1. I have some original Wizard of Oz books from the early 1900s. Earliest is 1903.
2. The Wizard of Oz stories are still filled with fantasy and perfect for children.
