Having read this so shortly after Our Kids: The America Dream in Crisis was a #Powerful combination. If you aren't screwed by the opportunity gap in childhood, you're pretty likely to be screwed by the bottom-line mentality of the corporate world.

I normally don‘t post non-book related stuff, but I am so excited that I had to share: I accepted a job offer today! My current place of work has been incredibly toxic, and I am so happy to get out. The only downside is I have to move my library to the living room b/c the job is remote and I will be putting my desk here. Now for the challenge of culling my books and moving all of this.

#newjob #library

Caterina Congratulations! 🎉 And good luck with the book moving! I hope you don't have to cull too many, you have such a lovely collection 😍 1y
Aims42 Congrats on the new job, nothing more exciting than leaving a toxic environment 🥳🤩🎉 1y
LiteraryinPA Congrats, that‘s so exciting! 1y

Kristy_K @Caterina Thank you! And I hope I don‘t have to either! I‘m hopeful most will still fit. 1y
Kristy_K @Aims42 Agreed! It felt like a weight lifted from my shoulders when I signed the offer. 1y
Kristy_K @TEArificbooks haha! So true. I‘ll have to think about that. 1y
Kristy_K @dabbe Thank you! And I wish I could! I debated even putting my desk in my room just so I could keep my library here, but I know the cramped space would bother me. 1y
julesG A small/minimalist desk solution in front of the shelves is not an option? 1y
Kristy_K @julesG They‘re giving me two monitors, a laptop, and a docking station so I think it‘ll need a larger desk, but I‘ll look into the size required! 1y
julesG Could work on a small-ish desk. My son's desk is small, I'd say 32 inch by 20 inch and he has two monitors and a laptop, plus mouse and additional gaming keypad. It's crammed, but he refused getting a larger desk. I'd give it a try before moving the library. Maybe check Pinterest for WFH desk ideas? 1y
TheLudicReader Congrats on the new job. I would totally explore other desk options before moving all those books, though. 😂 1y
bthegood Congrats🥳 1y
MaureenMc Congratulations! 🎉 1y
DaveGreen7777 Congratulations on the new job! 🙌 1y
Kristy_K @TheLudicReader Thank you! Yes, it‘s looking to be quite the task to move them. @bthegood @DaveGreen7777 Thank you!! 1y

If you‘re considering a change in careers this is the book for you.

Mehso-so

I was expecting a more robust examination of the downsizing of the professional class. It was more of a first-person account, light on research and heavy on anecdote. I won‘t pan it outright because the writing is good, just not what I expected.

Not book related per se, but I'm really, really excited to finally leave the finance industry.

Pretty sure there's a bookstore trip happening tomorrow to celebrate. 🤓

TheAromaofBooks

So I've blogged on Wordpress for over ten years. Recently, they switched to the Block Editor, which I absolutely hate. You can kind of use the Classic Editor but it's a hassle to get to. Today when I logged on the entire dashboard has been completely “updated“ & is an absolute nightmare. For instance, I have individual pages to link to books I've reviewed by specific authors. Those are now listed by which ones have been most recently updated ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) instead of in alphabetical order, with no option for sorting them any other way. The whole thing is a disaster.

All this to say - does anyone out there blog anywhere besides Wordpress? I just want my old, simple, straightforward blog host back where I type out a review & add one picture & move on. I don't need all this stupid drag & drop & each paragraph is its own little mini-blog & you can make it cool & shiny & everyone will want ⬇
4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to pay you money!!! I literally just want to write basic book reviews so I can look them up five years from now when I'm trying to remember whether or not I liked that one book.

So if anyone is using a different blog host that they like & that has a simple interface, please let me know. I'm in the market to move because Wordpress is sending me over the absolute edge with their “updates.“

Nebklvr I hate the new version too 4y

EvieBee Ugh! I understand completely. I went back to blogger and I‘ve enjoyed it. Gradually, they too have changed things to a newer platform that doesn‘t allow as much customization as before, but it‘s still very good considering it‘s free. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Nebklver - I was somewhat able to work with the block editor even though I think it's awkward, clunky, and completely unintuitive, but the latest update that has changed the entire dashboard, how I access different aspects of the blog, my ability to find/edit Pages & Posts - it's SO horrible. I've used & loved WP for so many years & hate to leave it behind, but I can't deal with these updates any more! It's sucked the joy out of blogging for me. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @EvieBee - Blogger was definitely one of the ones I was thinking of checking out. I'm totally cool with minimal customization because that's just not important to me. I'd be happy with a page that looks like a Word document haha ... hmm, maybe I should just be typing into a Google document & sharing that 😂 4y
julesG I hate the new version too. I used to blog with Google's Blogger, but I don't think it's much better. 4y
DogMomIrene It‘s been 4 years since I used a free Weebly site for my classroom, so I don‘t know how “shiny” they are now. The drag & drop blocks were easy to add/manipulate. Generally, I had my lessons typed up separately, so I would copy & paste onto my “daily lessons & homework” page. I added other pages for special projects. Easy to add a picture block & move it around. At the time Weebly used themes, so one of the education ones might suit you. 4y
DogMomIrene I use Squarespace for my dog blog, which I do monetize. Squarespace is shiny, for sure, but I‘ve been using them since 2014, and I like how they‘ve developed. If you‘re looking at Squarespace and have questions, please feel free to ask. I‘m not an affiliate for them since I‘m not B2B marketing. I‘m just a happy Squarespace blogger. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @DogMomIrene - Thank you for your thoughts!! I will definitely check out both of those options. I'm just glad to even get some names of options since I'm not sure what choices are even out there!! 4y
Bookwormjillk I use Squarespace as well. I like it- very clean and easy to use. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - That is good to know!! Thank you!! 4y
