Meet George Washington | Joan Heilbroner
post image

repost for @Amiable, @TEArificbooks

This month we will be reading a book about George Washington for #USPresidents. You pick the nonfiction book. Please tag @TEArificbooks and @Amiable There are so many book about George Washington, if you follow the hashtag you will see lots of options.

LinesUponAPage @TEArificbooks and @Amiable Sounds like a great challenge! We were in Maryland for Christmas and went to where George Washington decommissioned I think it was the Maryland State House? It was nice to be somewhere where a great man stood. Looking forward to reading more about him. Thanks for the chance to read more about the presidents. (edited) 7d
TEArificbooks @LinesUponAPage I used to live on old Mount Vernon land and frequently visited his house and mill and tomb. The mill still works and you can buy corn mill. The ladies that take care of the property do a lovely job. I highly recommend going to Mount Vernon if you ever get a chance. 7d
Amiable Thank you, @LitsyEvents ! 7d
LinesUponAPage @TEArificbooks Mount Vernon is amazing! We‘ve visited over 50 times in 20 years, mostly because one of our kids lives in Virginia. We took family pictures in 2025 behind the house and near the dock. GW is my husband's favorite president. He even dresses up for our July 4th event, which we started and now is run by a board of 7 Before we moved, our town didn't do a July 4th celebration. I told him I couldn't live in a town without events. 😉😆 7d

A very interesting account of the Witchcraft Trials. The peer pressure, mass hysteria, and the lure of power those teenage girls experienced and how they convinced whole communities to believe them is amazing AND terrifying.

#ChildrensClassicRead2025

TheBookHippie It‘s so terrifying and such a good lesson to teach a classroom. 1mo
tpixie @TheBookHippie yes!! I was thinking this would be perfect for middle school to help them reflect on their own behavior towards others! 1mo

#Read2025 #MonthlyNonFiction

Finished for #ChildrensClassicRead2025 I‘m sure I read this back in middle school but revisiting it in October was perfect for the season. I meant to reread The Crucible as a companion, but ran out of time. Amazing what havoc a group of young girls started, perpetuated by the patriarchy & resulting in the unnecessary imprisonment, ruin & death of so many. Jackson breaks in down in a way that is accessible to all.

TheBookHippie I feel it‘s so well done. It‘d be wonderful in a classroom. 2mo
julieclair I was planning to read this, too, but finished reading The Manningtree Witches (similar story, but in England) and decided I needed a break from witch trials for awhile. Too sad. @TheBookHippie 2mo

This was the perfect Halloween read. I also found it quite timely, which made it even spookier.

#Naturalitsy #HyggeHourReadathon

Tonight‘s #HyggeHour is being spent with this one from #ChildrensClassicRead2025 I‘m trying to capture a fall vibe with apple cider (cold) & this cinnamony pear cheesecake I got at a craft market this weekend. Listening to an instrumental mix called Witchy & Woodsy on Spotify: https://spotify.link/HzoCirVDNXb 🍂🧡🍁

Mood is not ready for Monday & a busy work week but what‘s new?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Witchcraft of Salem Village | Shirley Jackson

I have always enjoyed Shirley Jackson's writing, and this is no exception. I like the fact that she researched and created a nonfiction work for children about this sad period of American history. Jackson wrote that if the girls had been disciplined, it wouldn't have gotten as bad as it did. I agree, not with corporal punishment, mind you, but something.

I‘ve always been intrigued by the Salem Witch trials and this was a good informational read. I wasn‘t even aware of this title so thanks @TheBookHippie for introducing me to it. Great pick for spooky season.
