The Witchcraft of Salem Village
The Witchcraft of Salem Village | Shirley Jackson
31 posts | 28 read | 42 to read
Stories of magic, superstition, and witchcraft were strictly forbidden in the little town of Salem Village. But a group of young girls ignored those rules, spellbound by the tales told by a woman named Tituba. When questioned about their activities, the terrified girls set off a whirlwind of controversy as they accused townsperson after townsperson of being witches. Author Shirley Jackson examines in careful detail this horrifying true story of accusations, trials, and executions that shook a community to its foundations.

#Read2025 #MonthlyNonFiction

Finished for #ChildrensClassicRead2025 I‘m sure I read this back in middle school but revisiting it in October was perfect for the season. I meant to reread The Crucible as a companion, but ran out of time. Amazing what havoc a group of young girls started, perpetuated by the patriarchy & resulting in the unnecessary imprisonment, ruin & death of so many. Jackson breaks in down in a way that is accessible to all.

TheBookHippie I feel it‘s so well done. It‘d be wonderful in a classroom. 2w
julieclair I was planning to read this, too, but finished reading The Manningtree Witches (similar story, but in England) and decided I needed a break from witch trials for awhile. Too sad. @TheBookHippie 2w

This was the perfect Halloween read. I also found it quite timely, which made it even spookier.

#Naturalitsy #HyggeHourReadathon

Tonight‘s #HyggeHour is being spent with this one from #ChildrensClassicRead2025 I‘m trying to capture a fall vibe with apple cider (cold) & this cinnamony pear cheesecake I got at a craft market this weekend. Listening to an instrumental mix called Witchy & Woodsy on Spotify: https://spotify.link/HzoCirVDNXb 🍂🧡🍁

Mood is not ready for Monday & a busy work week but what‘s new?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have always enjoyed Shirley Jackson's writing, and this is no exception. I like the fact that she researched and created a nonfiction work for children about this sad period of American history. Jackson wrote that if the girls had been disciplined, it wouldn't have gotten as bad as it did. I agree, not with corporal punishment, mind you, but something.

I‘ve always been intrigued by the Salem Witch trials and this was a good informational read. I wasn‘t even aware of this title so thanks @TheBookHippie for introducing me to it. Great pick for spooky season.

This is a great introduction to the Salem Witch Trials. It would make for some really good discussions in sixth grade and possibly some parallels to the present would be made unfortunately.

10/10 illustrations

TheBookHippie It‘s so good. 1mo

#BFCr4 #BFC Week 4 Check-in! 4/4 runs for the week (two of them on the same day, one in the morning and one in the evening). All 4 were on the treadmill due to smoke from the Kincade fire making the air quality iffy in Berkeley. Finished the tagged book, so 6/6 books for the challenge, so I'm increasing my goal to 9 books. Great week! 👍💪🏃‍♀️ #RunningonReading @wanderinglynn @BarbaraJean @Catlover23 @hermyknee

Another treadmill #audiorun! (Yes, two in one day... In my defense, I spent most of the day sitting and reading, so I was getting fidgety. Also this means I got 4 runs in this week. 👍) #NFNov @rsteve388 @Clwojick #BFC #BFCr4 #RunningonReading

#TIL about the economic devastation caused by the Salem witch trials (in part because when people were released from prison post-hysteria, they had to pay the gov't for their stay in prison?? 😤)

Got some good #audiocooking in while I tried this new recipe and then enjoyed the fruits of my labor. 😋 I don't have a lot of practice cooking, so it's been hard to make time for cooking yummy meals with veggies and stuff, but I think this recipe is easy enough to fit into my schedule! Plus I made 3 servings in one go! 👍 #NFNov @Clwojick @rsteve388

2.2 mile treadmill #audiorun! Did surges, which is hard on a treadmill, but the air quality still isn't good enough for me to run outside. Continued listening to the tagged #audiobook for #NFNov! @Clwojick @rsteve388 #BFC #BFCr4 #runningonreading

rockpools Good going! Is the air quality improving any? 6y
Caterina @RachelO Thanks! It's been moderate/yellow the past couple days, so I can leave my apartment with no problem, but I don't want to spend a long time outside or workout outside until it's in the good/green zone! 6y

Kicked off #NFNov tonight by starting this #audiobook on my #audiorun! Running 3 miles on a treadmill sure is boring, so it was nice to have a good audiobook as company. I love Shirley Jackson, and I'm thinking that this can count as #truecrime for #NFNovbingo! @Clwojick @rsteve388

Scochrane26 I‘m getting ready to start going to a gym for winter, but treadmills are boring. I prefer to walk outside but not in cold. 6y
Caterina @Scochrane26 I just tried a treadmill for the first time this week because the air quality has been bad from the Kincade fire, and I definitely want to run outside again as soon as I can!! But it is so nice to have the option for when the air quality is bad, or it's dark outside, or it's too cold! 6y

This nonfiction YA about the Salem Witch Trials certainly packs a punch! Filled with details about Salem Village at that time, and how a whole community succumbed to paranoia, this is an excellent introduction to the subject.

But you really can‘t go wrong with Shirley Jackson.

I was aghast several times while I listened to this book. I guess I forgot or maybe didn‘t know the details of the Salem witch trials. It is a short one, but Jackson does a great job of moving the story along, even with all of the details. The narrator is perfect. #authoramonth #nonfiction19

August‘s author is Shirley Jackson! I‘ve already read We Have Always Lived in the Castle and The Haunting of Hill House, so I wanted to try something a little different and I found her book The Witchcraft of Salem Village. When I was in school, I was interested in the Salem Witch Trials so I chose this short nonfiction book!
#authoramonth

KathyWheeler This was probably the first Shirley Jackson book I ever read — way back in 4th or 5th grade. Loved it. 6y
mhillis @KathyWheeler I think I would have loved reading this book back then! 6y
KathyWheeler @mhillis I did. Back then I also reread a lot; I think I read this book 3 or 4 times. 6y

Soubhiville (Also- the lottery is one of my school readings that has stuck with me more than any other!) 6y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed this ”just the facts” non-fictionalized telling of the Salem Witch Trials! It doesn't matter how many books I read on the subject, (and I have read a lot!) I always learn at Least one new thing in each book!

Shirley Jackson giving us the story of the Salem Witchcraft trials? Yes, please. What could be more frightening than her take on repression, mores and teenage evilinas? Not much, really. #favoritescarynonfiction #AllHallowsRead
