pickI enjoyed this quiet, absorbing read about a murder in Shenzhen, told from different perspectives. Both Chinese and ex-pat protagonists, sympathetic characters, a deep understanding of HK and China but treads lightly. Some wonderful meals (#mademehungry)! I liked the warm, straightforward tone. Not quite, but a little like Murakami.

It's a story of war and poverty, a coming-of-age tale, and a search for identity and origins all wrapped up together. And it will make you crave pho.
