Lunch in Paris
Lunch in Paris: A Love Story, with Recipes | Elizabeth Bard
In Paris for a weekend visit, Elizabeth Bard sat down to lunch with a handsome Frenchman--and never went home again. Was it love at first sight? Or was it the way her knife slid effortlessly through her pav au poivre, the steak's pink juices puddling into the buttery pepper sauce? LUNCH IN PARIS is a memoir about a young American woman caught up in two passionate love affairs--one with her new beau, Gwendal, the other with French cuisine. Packing her bags for a new life in the world's most romantic city, Elizabeth is plunged into a world of bustling open-air markets, hipster bistros, and size 2 femmes fatales. She learns to gut her first fish (with a little help from Jane Austen), soothe pangs of homesickness (with the rise of a chocolate souffl) and develops a crush on her local butcher (who bears a striking resemblance to Matt Dillon). Elizabeth finds that the deeper she immerses herself in the world of French cuisine, the more Paris itself begins to translate. French culture, she discovers, is not unlike a well-ripened cheese-there may be a crusty exterior, until you cut through to the melting, piquant heart. Peppered with mouth-watering recipes for summer ratatouille, swordfish tartare and molten chocolate cakes, Lunch in Paris is a story of falling in love, redefining success and discovering what it truly means to be at home. In the delicious tradition of memoirs like A Year in Provence and Under the Tuscan Sun, this book is the perfect treat for anyone who has dreamed that lunch in Paris could change their life.

Much more than I expected, in a good way. Delicious descriptions of food combined with the difficulties and loneliness of being an American living in France, gives this memoir depth.

OMG @DinoMom I feel so completely spoiled!!!! My picture doesn't do it justice, thank you for my trip to Paris 😍😍😍😍😍 The books are all wonderful (hello 1920s Parisian cocktails!), and the fascinator, magnet, cookies, chocolates (they didn't melt! Yay!), and more. I love everything. My heart feels so happy right now!
I hope you like your #staycationintime just as much as I love mine! Thank you thank you thank you Sharon!

Lunch in Paris was our September #IllSeeYouInParisBook . This memoir reads like a love story… a love story about food! Don't get me wrong, there's an actual love story in there too. 3 love stories actually; 1 with the French food, 1 with the French man, and 1 with the country. Although the latter might have been a love-hate relationship at least at times. Reading or listening to this book will make you want to rush (cont in comments)

TheHeartlandBookFairy rush out & start cooking, or at least eating French food 💕😋 3y

One review says it‘s more than a love story, it‘s about the author learning and building a new life in Paris, after she fell in love with a Frenchman and the French cuisine. This light memoir comes with recipes, so it sounds really good, if you love food and 🇫🇷. The author‘s 2nd book, Picnic In Provence, follows her, her husband, and baby-on-the-way, to Provence where they ventured into artisanal ice cream business.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled This will be the perfect book for my francophile teenage daughter!! ❤️ 🇫🇷 She‘s traveling to Paris next summer. 4y

I am so NOT having lunch in Paris at this moment, but instead waiting for jury duty. I couldn‘t bring my knitting, so maybe I‘ll have some reading time.

Emilymdxn Jury service is... an experience. Sorry you‘re stuck doing it, I had to do it when I was 19 and I wasn‘t a fan 4y

Enjoyable, light memoir that considers what it means to adapt to a new culture. Elizabeth Bard falls in love with a Frenchman and moves with him to France; her encounters with food and cooking are effective symbols for her experiences with the culture as a whole. While I don't cook--so I must admit I skimmed the recipes!--Bard's relationship with her husband and her self-realization are interesting and thought-provoking.⠀

Our night out together for my birthday, which I've been so looking forward to, didn't go well as I'd hoped, so my sweet husband dropped me off at home for some solitary reading time in an attempt to recover it, while he picks up our son from the sitter across town. A keeper, that one.❤️

Finished this one a couple weeks ago . This memoir made a good lunchtime read. An American woman moves to Paris to be with the man she loves. Adjusting to a new country and new husband makes a pleasant story. Yummy recipes end each chapter. This book suited my purpose but it is not full of angst or excitement and may not be to everyone's taste

This was real sweet, a love story told by someone who took a huge leap, making the decision to up and move her life to where her heart resides: France. It starts from the moment she meets her beloved, through all the culture shocks and adjustments and compromises it took to start anew.

Though I enjoyed this book overall, I couldn't help but compare it to her later memoir PICNIC IN PROVENCE, which is delightful and has better recipes IMO.
