About a Girl | Lindsey Kelk

Bailedbailed

Bail at 245. I cannot stand a single character and Kelk is trying far too hard to be funny. Awful. I'm having such a bad run of books recently!

This has been on my shelves since I went to an exhibit about Miller and Man Ray. I think the cover should read “Her Many Lives” instead of “A Life” because this book shows that she was not someone content to stay within the boundaries of expectations. She was a Vogue model, a muse, a photographer, a war correspondent; over and over she reinvented herself and pursued her desires. An interesting look at a complex but important figure. #24in2024

I read the previous books in the Bill Smith / Lydia Chin series and enjoyed them, so I expected this to be a good read. Instead it was a bit of a slog. Slower paced, less of the relationship between the two, and a less-than-compelling mystery plot. The bright sides were the few scenes with Lydia's mother, and the commentary on the New York art scene. ⭐⭐⭐ / 5 #mystery

Just started this one. I'm in the mood for some mystery in the Big Apple, and I've enjoyed others in the Bill Smith/Lydia Chin series. #mystery

I don‘t know when I picked this up on Audible or why, but it was a really solid memoir of a young woman‘s experience as a war correspondent/ photo journalist. Lynsey Addario has worked in almost all the contemporary war zones risking her life to take photos that show the cost of war on civilians, soldiers and most often innocent women & children. Her story was fascinating & I loved hearing her story. #52Books23 #AWarOtherThanWWIorWWII

Greta and Cecil | Diana Souhami

Panpan

Neither of the main players in this account of the on/off relationship between Greta Garbo & Cecil Beaton come across as very nice people. Garbo, well-known as reclusive, seems also quite selfish & rude & dismissive of her fans, whilst Beaton seems like a bit of a flibbertigibbet. They have a brief affair, which Beaton thinks will lead to marriage. When it doesn't, Beaton commits the ultimate betrayal in Garbo's eyes - he talks to the press.

OutsmartYourShelf There's an LGBTQ+ slant to the book as both Garbo & Beaton had affairs with both men & women, & both liked to wear clothes typically worn by the opposite sex at the time. Ultimately their personalities were too different to have ever made a go of things as a couple. Overall it was quite interesting as I didn't know a lot about either of them, but really, not much happened & it was very slow at times. 2⭐
