Ever Green: Saving Big Forests to Save the Planet | John W. Reid, Thomas E. Lovejoy
post image
Pickpick

Ever Green is a terrific and smart book, delving into the science of forests and why they‘re important to the planet, then reaching further to human interactions with forests and how the economics actually favor forest conservation. Absolutely superb read that looks at many spots around the world, including #RepublicofCongo.

BarbaraBB This sounds good. Definitely stacked. 2y
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Bolivia and Brazil are also in here, so it would work for #ReadingAmericas2023 2y

There is no joy in this book, about “forced African labor” to build a railroad across #Congo to the Pacific in the 1920-30s. “Recruited” (often captured) from #Chad all the way to Congo, they were chained together when walking or standing for weeks on end on river barges to their work sites. Forced to work under pain of death with practically nothing to eat (less than fed to Nazi concentration camp victims) using no tools to clear forests & dig ⬇️

Texreader tunnels with nothing but their bare hands, the men died in droves. If you thought slavery had ended in the 19th century then you are sadly mistaken. The French claimed to be bringing civilization to Africa: the railroad! In his intro the author tried to dismiss the notion this book is “pain porn.” But I‘m not sure how it could be otherwise. This is an extraordinarily dark chapter in French history. We are the better for being made aware of it ⬇️ 2y
Texreader and how, despite many trying to raise the alarm about what was happening, the great machinery of government power and bureaucracy trivialized and covered it up. Little known because of the almost immediate World War II, the author is using this book to try to resurrect the facts for a modern audience. It‘s well written and researched but beware trigger warnings abound. #readingafrica2022 This book works for #RepublicofCongo. (edited) 2y

I nabbed this one to read for #RepublicofCongo, but turns out it‘s set in #DRC! Oh well. It was entertaining enough that I kept listening, though truthfully I didn‘t pay that much attention to it. It‘s a wildly implausible, back-to-back action, cinematic, gory book. With one token female, natch. This one is like masculine fluff.

Texreader I‘m so sorry you didn‘t like this book, having just finished it myself. There are as many main characters who are women in the Sigma Force novels as men but due to their specialties they didn‘t play a big role in this book. They often are integral to the books: Lisa, Kat, Seichan, and Maria. Rollins‘ women characters are amazing. His books are intense & not just for men. I love them and the characters, but I understand if it‘s not your genre. 2y

I‘m my never-ending quest to find books for the #readingAfrica2022 challenge I came across this excellent article about 3 writers from the Republic of Congo (as opposed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo).

https://theculturetrip.com/africa/congo/articles/three-writers-from-the-republic...

Unfortunately the books appear to be pretty hard to find and most of them look very good. #republicofcongo

I finally finished this short memoir (non-fiction and me are not really friends); it‘s more about the country and the author‘s family than the author. It makes me possibly want to read more by the author and more myths of the Congo. Full review at https://mydearwatsonbooks.wordpress.com.

Finally getting started on my second book for #passportlitsy. It was hard to find a book for the #RepublicofCongo and not the #DemocraticRepublicofCongo (because yes, there‘s a difference).

#nonfiction #memoir

RealLifeReading I read a very strange book by this author once 7y
