Never | Ken Follett
34 posts | 20 read | 10 to read
The new must-read epic from master storyteller Ken Follett: more than a thriller, it's an action-packed, globe-spanning drama set in the present day. "A compelling story, and only too realistic." --Lawrence H. Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary "Every catastrophe begins with a little problem that doesn't get fixed." So says Pauline Green, president of the United States, in Follett's nerve-racking drama of international tension. A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert; a stolen US Army drone; an uninhabited Japanese island; and one country's secret stash of deadly chemical poisons: all these play roles in a relentlessly escalating crisis. Struggling to prevent the outbreak of world war are a young woman intelligence officer; a spy working undercover with jihadists; a brilliant Chinese spymaster; and Pauline herself, beleaguered by a populist rival for the next president election. Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and a delivers a visceral, heart-pounding read that transports readers to the brink of the unimaginable.

I'm a huge Ken Follett fan, but NEVER didn't measure up to prior works. I didn't care for some of the characters, and the ending wasn't believable. But - it's still a fast-paced page-turner, just like his other books. It has good reviews- so worth a read - just my least favorite of all of his books.

I was concerned the too too real topic might make this a bad choice, but I am glad I did not let my inner self keep me from it! Ken Follet is a masterful storyteller & I was fully invested in the storyline and his characters. I did not want to put it down. ⬇️

Bluebird The best part: Follet created a female president who was strong, competent and kick-ass. Throughout the book there was no misogynistic behavior toward her. She was treated as an equal…nay as a President. Not as a ‘female‘ President. Loved it! This is the 2nd book I‘ve read that was narrated by January Lavoy. She is becoming a favorite. 1y

Follett writes brilliant historical fiction and I‘ve read some of his war books. But this book proves he can write complex thrillers. It‘s definitely an on the edge of your seat most of the time as events transpire in #Chad, North Korea, China, and the US. This is a very dark book. Be in the right mindset when you read it—maybe skip the news while reading it. I listened to the audio. The narrator blew me away, capable of voicing different ⬇️

Texreader genders, ages, and many nationalities and always keeping them well differentiated. Extremely well done. Book and audio highly recommended. #readingafrica2022 2y

From the heavy-handed Dictatorial governments of North Africa to the megalomaniacal one in North Korea, the high-paced action flies thick and fast! And the US plays the pivotal role of an uncomfortable but powerful ally to some of these regimes. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and a delivers a visceral, heart-pounding read that transports readers to the brink of the unimaginable.

💥Looking for recommendations!! Please help!💥

I‘m looking for more thrillers involving the White House staff, including the President, possibly terrorism. I LOVED Never by Ken Follett and am currently riveted by State of Terror by Penny & Clinton. What else can I add to my to-read list?

I want suspenseful, heart-pounding pageturners that make me hold my breath while reading. Fiction, please!

Thank you, Litsy friends!!

KatieB I‘ve read Never and it reminded me a lot of the Jack Ryan novels by Tom Clancy. Have you read any of those? 2y
intothehallofbooks @KatieB Yes! You‘re so right! I‘ve read one, Patriot Games. Thank you for reminding me about Jack Ryan! I also love the TV show. 2y
Susanita Margaret Truman (Harry‘s daughter) wrote the “capital crimes” series in the 1980s and 90s. They‘re probably a little cheesy, but they might be fun. 2y

KatieB I think you might also like the tagged book. Not the White House but a similar international web-type thriller. I thought it was excellent 2y
KatieB And I‘ve actually never see the Jack Ryan TV show but I‘ve heard great things! 2y
vlwelser I liked this as much as State of Terror. 2y
intothehallofbooks @Susanita I had not heard of these books before but I just looked it up and it‘s a nice, long series. It sounds like a lot of fun. I just added the first book to my to-read list, thank you so much for bringing it to my attention!! 2y
intothehallofbooks @KatieB I had forgotten about this one! I haven‘t read it yet but it has actually been recommended to me a while back and I completely forgot. Thank you for putting it back on my radar, I just added it to my list. 2y

Never exposes the true interconnectedness of our world, starting with events occurring in #Chad which eventually echo into US/China relations. This book is terrific and incredibly engaging, but if world events are distressing to you at the moment, I would not recommend reading this. It might be too much. It gets very bleak.

This book is a wild ride—it builds slowly as unconnected, seemingly innocuous decisions/choices leave ripples in their wake which then spread & coalesce into more momentous decisions that have consequences with more far reaching impact. (Reading this & watching what‘s going on with Russia & the Ukraine is eerie.) About halfway through the book really kicks into gear & then it‘s impossible to put down. Not Follett‘s best writing but a good story.

TrishB Totally agree 👍🏻 I have thought about this book many times over the past couple of weeks amidst current tensions. 2y

Back home so back to the BIG BOOK it is. The story is just getting going but I‘m enjoying it and definitely interested in seeing where it‘s headed. That being said, almost everything Follett writes about Chicago—in the first 100 pages at least—is implausible or just straight up wrong. If it wasn‘t so amusing, it would be a distraction. Fortunately, the story IS entertaining so the lack of research has me just shaking my head. 🤦‍♀️😂🤷‍♀️

I‘ve been reading this book for so long that my TBR has grown another stack since I started. I love the way Ken Follett can take a sprawling cast of characters and show you the points of intersection in their stories. Unfortunately in this one, I liked the first half (character and world building) so much more than the action packed second act.

CoverToCoverGirl I‘m reading it now, only on chapter two, there‘s a lot of people to keep straight. 2y

It‘s so much fun to anticipate a book SO MUCH and then it 100% lives up to it. The possibility of nuclear war is definitely a serious subject but I enjoyed every second of reading about it here. My heart raced, I held my breath, I couldn‘t stop turning the pages. I adore Ken Follett‘s work for the exciting ride it takes me on while I‘m reading it. I‘m so glad I bought this one for myself!!

This was like one of those all action films that never stops. Also shows how easy it is for international politics to spiral out of control. A good, exciting blockbuster.

I have read all of Follett's books & this one was a very intense read. Pauline Green is president of the US and has the job of trying to control an escalating international crisis. There is a lot going on in this novel that is a reminder of what is going on in our world today. It's a book that once you start reading, you will need to read to the end in order to find out what happens. Follett has the ability to fray our nerves & keep us captured.

EadieB Read it for yourself and see if you can escape his clutches. 2y
