Mehso-so

I seem to be in the thick of the mediocre books, written after the death of Christie‘s first husband. Better than The Big Four, but that‘s not saying much.

I will give her credit, I was convinced I knew all the twists, and I was completely wrong on all accounts. 🤣

It was fun to see the Miss Marple‘s village, St Mary Mead, mentioned for the first time.

Scochrane26 I haven‘t read that many of hers yet, but I definitely like some better than others. 4y
alisiakae @Scochrane26 Since I'm reading them in publication order, I'm definitely learning that some of her earlier books were....rough. I'm almost up to the first Miss Marple, who has always been my favorite! 4y
Scochrane26 @4thhouseontheleft I‘ve read them in series order mostly, but I‘m not very far along. So far, I like Miss Marple the best. I‘m thinking I should read one a month or I‘ll never read them all. 4y

alisiakae @Scochrane26 I forgot to mention in this review (so just went back and added it), that Miss Marple‘s village is mentioned for the first time in this book. So that was fun! 4y
BiblioLitten I almost picked it up a few years back when I was travelling in a blue coloured train😄 4y
Weaponxgirl I have never read any Agatha Christie shockingly enough but I am watching poirot as we speak 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Nice — sorry for the mediocre streak. Hopefully you‘re out of it by now! 4y

So true! Let me hide in the corner with a good book any day!

I thought a lot more of my Agatha Christie books were set in the 20s, but apparently I was wrong. And I still find it a little funny that one of my favorites of hers is actually one of the ones she hated. #marchintoreading #setinthe20s @RealLifeReading

I love wearing this shirt to class when we're reading Gatsby. It is covered in lines from the first chapter. Such a wonderful book. I could read it a hundred times. #marchintoreading #setinthe20s

Girls at the Kingfisher Club | Genevieve Valentine
post image

Girls at the Kingfisher Club is a retelling of the 12 Dancing Princesses, which was one of my favorite fairytales as a child. Valentine does a wonderful job subverting the fairytale narrative and offering instead a novel about women claiming independence for themselves in 12 different ways.

(and Genevieve Valentine is the name her parents gave her. So cool, right?)

In 1920's Detroit there was a lot going on. Prohibition was in full swing and bootleggers (like my grandpa) were bringing in liquor across the river from Canada. The Purple Gang was flourishing here. And my mom and dad were in high school. They would have my oldest brother in 1929 and me in 1952, with three other siblings in between. Here is my mom in her junior year of high school, 1928 - 1929. Front row middle. #setinthe20s #marchintoreading

Bookzombie My husband and I are watching Ken Burn's Prohibition documentary and The Purple Gang was featured in a bit of it. 7y

lynneamch So cool! Thanks for posting. Heading to Detroit next week. I remember a scene about the rum-runners crossing the Detroit river when it was iced over in 7y
Suzze @lynneamch I'm just west of the city, in Westland. 7y
lynneamch Interesting factoid that Canada is actually south of the US there. 😊 7y
lynneamch Detroit river, that is, not Westland. 😉 7y
Suzze @lynneamch Yes! I have to take the expressway east, then south. Then I go south on the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor, Ontario. 7y
Betty Love that history--from bootlegger to cops. And I can see the family resemblance, @suzze 7y
