Mehso-so

Folklorn was recommended by my #tailoredbookrecommendations by #bookriot.

Unfortunately I didn‘t love it… I struggled to keep reading at some points, as I found Elsa‘s low points repetitive and self destructive. The family dynamic here is really dark with an abusive dad and possibly addicted brother and it‘s unclear what the MC‘s mental health status is.

The connections drawn between Korean folklore and Elsa‘s family kept me going, but ⬇️

Soubhiville Ultimately I was left unsatisfied. 2y

Feels like a #bathandabook kind of night. This one was recommended for me by my bibliologist at #bookriot, Laura. #tailoredbookrecommendations

My latest set of #tailoredbookrecommendations has arrived and I don‘t think I will continue this second subscription. I switched from print books to email only after the last debacle, but I‘m rather disappointed. I specifically asked for no YA and two of these are considered YA. There‘s nothing wrong with YA. I just have a ton of YA fantasy on my shelves still unread and don‘t want to add to it. Plus, the Oyeyemi has terrible reviews. 😔 *sigh*

Laughterhp I also ask for no YA a lot on this and my last round was all YA. This time I don‘t think I got any YA because I was very specific in my feedback... 3y
DGRachel @Laughterhp Yeah, I think I repeat “no YA” with every feedback, but it‘s a challenge when my bibliologist changes every other quarter. 😔 3y
Laughterhp Oh that‘s annoying. Mine only changed between the first and the second quarter. And the rest of the time I‘ve had the same person from the second quarter. 3y

TheLibrarian I really want to love this service but so far it‘s fallen flat. I agree that they don‘t always take into consideration what you don‘t want, even when you say it more than once. And yes, it makes it hard when they keep switching bibliologists on you. I found someone I liked the most (pick wise) and they switched me to someone else. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
TheLibrarian I‘ve also come to the conclusion that I just want someone to tell me what books I own I should read and why since I own so many 😂 3y
Chrissyreadit @TheLibrarian that‘s the beauty of #bookspin getting through my TBR one book at a time.... 3y
Reviewsbylola Yeah I wouldn‘t be impressed either. @reggie just posted about the Oyeyemi! (edited) 3y
vivastory I love br, I've been reading their site nearly daily for longer than I've been on litsy. However I've noticed over the past year that their content is skewing a lot more towards YA. Somedays when I look at it like 80% of the daily posts are all YA. I have no bone to pick with YA, but I loved the eclecticism of br at the beginning. The fact that there'd be an article about nonfiction cult books posted right next to a post about the man booker. They 3y
vivastory seem to have lost some of that over the past year or so. 3y
TheLibrarian @Chrissyreadit That‘s a good idea but still a little overwhelming for me. I like the idea of someone looking at what I‘ve recently enjoyed and have them say “read x book on your shelf because...” I‘m really good at talking myself out of reading something for something else so I like having to provide feedback to better improve my recommendations. 3y
DGRachel @TheLibrarian I loved the service when it first started. I had the same bibliologist for 5 quarters on one of my subscriptions and it was like getting recommendations from a friend who really listened. I've had 2 others in the 4 quarters that followed. I've had two bibliologists in 4 quarters on my other subscription. It's like the service grew to include more customers than they could handle and the quality of the service has really suffered. 3y
DGRachel @vivastory Yes! I don't go on their site as much anymore, but I've noticed that trend even with their newsletters. It makes me think they did market research that declared YA was the most profitable to promote and the rest of us be damned. I don't have anything against YA, either, but I like having MCs that aren't teenagers or twenty-somethings and I hate angst. Ugh, and love triangles. 😖 3y

Today was a good mail day. My latest round of #TailoredBookRecommendations from #myTBR arrived: gotta love a strong stack of #WOC authors. 💖 I hadn‘t heard of the tagged book before, but I‘m excited for all of these. I also finally received my FaeCrate Empire of Gold hangover recovery kit and I‘ll post that under a spoiler tag in a few minutes. 💖 #bookmail #bookhaul

MallenNC I have TBR but just the email recommendations. I love it! 4y
DGRachel @MallenNC I was really struggling mentally at the beginning of lockdown that I signed up for a second account with a different email address. I‘ve had the email only version for a year and a half. This is my second hardcover delivery and I love both. 4y
MallenNC @DGRachel I‘ve been considering changing over. 4y

DGRachel @MallenNC I like the email one since you can get recommendations of older titles, not just new releases. But I like the hardcover version because I love book mail. LOL 4y
MallenNC @DGRachel Book mail is the best! 4y
Laughterhp The City We Became was weird, but actually really good. 4y

The first #24B4Monday readathon of 2020 starts tomorrow! My proposed TBR consists of the three remaining #TailoredBookRecommendations that I would like to finish this month (top row), my current listen (History of Magic) and the audiobook of a book @howjessreads reminded me has been on my #TBR for more than 2 years. 😆 I have a road trip Sunday with a few hours in a hotel, so I have high hopes for making a good dent in this stack.

Andrew65 Good luck, sone great choices. 😊😍👏 4y
DGRachel @Andrew65 Thanks! I hope they‘re good. I‘m having a lot of trouble deciding on what to read now that I‘ve finished The Three Musketeers. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 4y
jb72 Thanks for joining us! Good luck with your reads. I hope you love them all. 4y
Andrew65 @DGRachel I know the feeling. So many books I want to read I sometimes suffers from choosing paralysis! 4y

The carrier pigeon has arrived! Got my next set of #tailoredbookrecommendations today, and I‘m looking forward to these. A little concerned about the miserable Litsy rating on the tagged book, but it is one of the books I bought on #bookstoreromanceday a few weeks ago. A.J. Fikry has been on my radar for a while, and this could be just the push I need to finally read it. Elif Shafak is new to me, but the book looks good. Fingers crossed!

Victoriahoperose I love AJ Fikry. It‘s one of my favorites. 5y

How is it already time for a new round of #TailoredBookRecommendations?!? I don‘t have space in my August schedule to read any of the books from Q3 in print, thanks to a bunch of non-renewable library books, so I tried Daisy Jones on audio at worked and HATED it. So, I switched to the tagged book, listened for two hours, and I‘m not loving it. 😭 I will finish it, but I‘m definitely disappointed. 😔 Debating on trying the other on audio.

Laughterhp Is this subscription worth it? I already have so many books on my TBR I feel like I wouldn‘t read the books they suggest, but I‘m so curious about it. 5y
DGRachel @Laughterhp I think it is. I have the recommendation only version, so I can buy the books in whatever format works best for me, rather than the version where they send you hard cover books. I haven't read all of the books recommended, yet, but I try to get through at least one before the next round is released. My bibliologist is also really responsive. You get to provide feedback on each set of recs, and my bibliologist takes everything (cont'd) 5y
DGRachel ...I say into account and provides recs based on my shifting mood and feedback. She really helps expand my TBR into books that I had never heard of and several of the recs have been spot on and perfect. I'm just struggling with the latest set of recs, but that's not her fault. 5y
