Samplergal Ha! I had no parental supervision on my reading. I read all kinds of adult stuff. Peyton Place read in fourth grade comes to mind. I had no idea what those adults were doing, but remember that I didn‘t ask my mother, as supervision may have started. I read Gone with the Wind in fourth grade too. My librarian at the public library stopped me from borrowing some. 😂 6y

AmyG I‘m with @Samplergal as I had NO supervision either. I‘m going to guess it was most likely a Harold Robbins book....probably A Stone for Danny Fisher. My friend and I were all over that book. It‘s where we learned about sex. 6y

InLibrisVeritas I am not entirely sure, as I had no supervision on my reading either. One of the earliest (3rd grade i think) was the tagged book. I remember parts of it being really sad, and that there were a few sex scenes.

Strong for Potatoes: A Novel

Stacy_31 Flowers in the Attic. Still one of my favorites, I read it in maybe 4th grade? Then of course the rest of the series. My reading was largely supervised, and I always thought it was funny that I couldn‘t read Sweet Valley High, but my mom didn‘t bat an eye at VC Andrews. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y

MicrobeMom Not sure I should have read this at 11 because I was a fearful child, but I loved it. My parents censored TV and movies but not books. I do the same with my kids!

MeganAnn The first adult novel I remember was grabbing a Danielle Steele novel off my mom‘s shelf at 12 or 13. Eventually my mom caught on and gave me some of her older more gothic romance novels by Victoria Holt, Phyllis Whitney and the like (that were probably less sexually explicit). But she never really censored what we brought home from the library either so I‘m sure there were others I maybe don‘t remember as well. 6y

jb72 I really don‘t remember my first adult novel. While we had a library in town, my mother never took us. I started going on my own (walking) in like 8th grade. My mother had some Steele and Sheldon books, but I never read them. I would walk to the library and check out cheesy romance books (Harlequin). Funnily enough I now dislike romance books and prefer horror. 6y

SleepyDragon When I was a kid, we didn't really distinguish between YA and adult, so I'm not sure. I read The Hobbit in 5th grade, so maybe that was my first. Around then was when I started raiding my older sister's and dad's bookcases. 6y
